Morning Buzz: USC Starts Cal-UCLA Civil War

I’ve been at Memorial Stadium in Berkeley and watched Cal student pelt the USC band with oranges in 1991.

I’ve been at Pauley Pavilion when the scoreboard actually read U$C and rowdy UCLA students had to be locked in a storage closet to restore order. And then there was the 2010 USC-UCLA game, where about 40 fans fought outside the Rose Bowl and two men were stabbed.

But in a delicious twist, I’m now seeing Cal and UCLA fans forget they hate USC and go after each other with a vengeance over the Bruins’ Big Ten move.

It’s like USC left a time bomb and slipped away, leaving Cal and UCLA to deal with the fallout. Even the fan sites are at war as these tweets demonstrate.

I never thought I would care but UCLA plays at Cal on Nov. 25.

That’s a Friday so the game will be on Fox and hopefully there will be plenty of irate students. Although it’s Thanksgiving weekend, so knowing the Pac-12 the stadium will be half empty.

But emotions are hot right now between the schools. And for once, USC isn’t the bad guy.

  1. Is UCLA really going to leave the Pac-12? I guess they are but I keep hearing that Gavin Newsome is against the move and he can tend to be a Justin Trudeau type of dictator who usually gets what he wants.

  2. Prediction: UCLA’s UC allocation will be docked 50% of the difference between UCLA and Cal’s annual football revenue and re-allocated to Cal. For example, if UCLA 70 and Cal 30, $20 million UC distribution re-allocated. That’s EQUITY baby!!!

      1. The University of South Carolina seems to have had an identity problem back in the late 19th century. From Wikipedia, The University of South Carolina was founded in 1801 as South Carolina College. Then they couldn’t make up their minds…

        * Chartered as the University of South Carolina on January 10, 1866
        * Chartered as South Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanics on October 3, 1880
        * Chartered as South Carolina College in 1882
        * Chartered as the University of South Carolina on May 9, 1888
        * Chartered as South Carolina College on April 21, 1890
        * Chartered as the University of South Carolina on February 17, 1906

As such, USC, founded in 1880 as The University of Southern California and then not changing its name for 141 years and counting, wins the naming battle on the basis of consistency. (It also wins because, outside of a few Deep South backwaters where they love kissing Trump’s ass just as much as they do their sisters, the rest of the country knows “USC” as the one in L.A. with the pretty Song Girls.)

  5. I attended an SC game at Cal many years ago where we crushed the Bears. A student threw a grapefruit from the stands into the head of a USC band member. Her plastic helmet was broken and she received a concussion. After the conclusion of the game I was walking past some fraternity houses next to a young family that had two little girls in SC Song Girl outfits. The low-class, dirtbag Cal students yelled to the couple, “Are you going to teach your daughters to become whores like their mother?” BRUTAL!!! Wish I had 5 gallons of gas and a match to burn down that trash! Haven’t been back since…hope all Cal sports programs go broke.

    1. Sure seems to me if Cal was to go under financially for sports they would become a shadow of who they used to be. That would be fine with me, they are highly overrated anyway in the education dept.

    2. You made an error here. The students who yelled at the family weren’t “low-class, dirtbag[s]” because they went to Cal… it was because they belonged to a fraternity.

Also Einsteinium, Americanium, and four other elements. Read more of his accomplishments on the interweb.
Dr. Seaborg is best known for receiving the Nobel for discovering the element, Plutonium and leading the Manhattan Project at the Fermi Lab at the Univ of Chicago during WW2 to develop the Hydrogen bomb that effectively brought an end to hostilities in August 1945.

  7. WE can all cherry-pick ugly incidents that will support our biases and prejudices. A couple of drunk Cal frat-sissies yelling ugly-words at some people does not represent the entire Cal family. Most folks are civil and decent-enough.

And welcome home to the real Eddie. Should have known there are some 12-year-old little-boy types on these blogs who get their jollies by crudely imitating others.

It does make for humorless reading, the worst kind on a Wolf-blog, but as the New Hampshire slogan states: “Live and let live.”

    1. The New Hampshire slogan is “Live Free or Die”.
The phrase “live and let live”, according to one source, comes from the Dutch. It is found in the The Ancient Law-Merchant, a collection of commercial law compiled by G. De Malynes in 1622. This code of law was written by medieval merchants to govern trade throughout Europe, North Africa and Asia Minor.

      1. Thank you. I know some people from NH who are very proud of their motto. I had a vague recollection of the other line that its origins were commercial related but could not remember the details.

      2. Just out of college, 40 years ago, my buddy rented a U-Haul and I helped him move. The truck was beat to shite, but had NH plates. We kept reciting the state motto all the way back to returning it after we moved him in at his new place. The U-Haul guy checking us in said “This one is now going out of service. You had the honor of the last trip in this beauty. You gotta love the New Hampshire plates. You don’t see these every day.”

  8. The Northmen should be ashamed of themselves. Their outdated, gesticulation of past glory does not offer Cal, Stanford or other grifters a pass on USC (or UCLA) renewal and return to authority. Time to earn your right to exist NorCal. Newsome can’t even follow his own rules. All bark and no bite. We don’t care about elements unless they offer an edge on GameDay. Go get Dr. Seaborg to run athletics or maybe that explains the sad state of affairs up north.

Away game in NJ and followed by away game in Ohio or Michigan? End of season for SC. Guaranteed.

SC will need a bye week after every east coast game. Enjoy those martinis Mrs Helton.

  9. Newsom getting involved in the Pac-12 does sound like Justin Trudeau. But this is classic California, where a (relatively, in this case) productive organization plans to leave and CA whines and tries to tax it as the door is closing.

Or buy a Johnny Cheetin’ Wooden trophy, the first year that ugly cheated, 1964 team, for $300.00”. They can have a yard sell at Poly Povillion, selling all of that thrift store merchandise.

  14. The 11 college presidents and chancellors who make up the College Football Playoff’s board of managers met via Zoom on Monday and began a discussion that could reshape the future of college sports, sources told ESPN.

Multiple sources told ESPN that the board of managers briefly discussed the possibility of restructuring how college football is governed, with the idea presented of major college football potentially being governed outside of the NCAA. The most logical place for the sport to be run outside of the NCAA would be under the auspices of the CFP, which was discussed on the call. The CFP currently oversees the sport’s postseason playoff and has contractual ties to other marquee postseason bowl games.

Back to back eastern time zone games in oct/Nov lousy weather with no bye week . The whining will be heard coast to coast.
Upper Midwest lousy weather in oct/Nov that is hard to comprehend unless you’ve experienced it . Even the locals stay inside.

      2. Cal, why is traveling such a big concern? Everyone travels, all the time and somehow they get through it. Ever seen a Packers game in the winter? Seems people are willing to go out if the game is worth it. The real whining is going to be coming from Cal, if it hasn’t started already.

Going through three time zones, playing in inclement weather and trying to remain a student is going to be a challenge. Two weeks in a row will be brutal. We’re not talking recreational travel. Why do you think THE PROS are grouped by time zone whenever possible?
Before you denigrate into your usual uninformed pap and declare that Cal whining has started, you might want to decide on using facts in evidence. Nobody at CAL is or was whining.
You’re starting to sound like CNN.

  15. It’s 62.5 million each school on the football contracts, then 37.5 million from the bowl games and CBS March Madness deal plus the Big10 network. Guaranteed. That’s why Fox didn’t want to overbid since they now get some ad money as a partner in the Big10 network. ESPN will probably swoop in and make an outrageous offer to have exclusive rights to the SEC and they’ll throw the Pac12 a $150 million deal. Northern Cal don’t do college sports viewing like us SoCal folks.
