The USC Friday Column Supplement

Here’s a few more photos from 1988.

Erik Affholter makes a catch in the No. 2-ranked Trojans’ 27-10 loss to No. 1 Notre Dame.

  • With three dorms permanently closed at USC and Fluor Tower recently demolished, here’s a picture of the still-standing Birnkrandt dorm from 1988.

And a wider view of the dorm today.

      1. The Rice game needs to happen…but…Stanford will be the measuring stick…
        P. S.
George —- have you noticed that, compared to all the bickering & craziness posted by us, Scott is beginning to look like Marcus Aurelius?

  1. It looks like all that scare that the Los Al QB was going to leave and go to T A&M(and maybe Zachariah Branch too…..2….5 stars) did some good. It was shortly after that that this new NIL(Student Body Right) entered the picture. There’s a lot of donors and rich SC alumni that started to see the writing on the wall…..namely, that the educational elites at SC(most of whom have never worked a real job in their lives) have no idea how to set up such a business as an NIL. They saw SC lose some real good players to schools who had a good NIL program and they decided to step in and do something. That also proved what most already knew….namely, that the real reason why SC was losing many of those outstanding players was because of a poor NIL and not because of poor recruiting or anything else.

  2. I was back in the Philippines 🇵🇭 when those pictures were taken, I believe it was the Ted Tollner era. I ran a restaurant that served fried Dog Snoots, and peenus sandwich’s. The hairy Balls ice cream was to die for.. yum yum 😋

      1. Come on, what do you think?- You’ve been reading Eddie’s quips for a year-or-more. Does this chump sound like our Eddie?

    1. To the Ed imposter. I know you enjoy thinking about “peanuses”. But don’t go wandering into your neighbors’ beds:

A Florida man was shot dead Thursday after breaking into a stranger’s house, getting into bed with the homeowner, and saying “I love you” while wielding a machete, authorities said.

The victim was asleep in an apartment attached to his home in Fruitville, Florida, when the bizarre ordeal began. The unnamed homeowner woke up to find the intruder lying next to him with a machete belonging to the victim. The armed man—who authorities have not identified—was whispering sweet nothings to the victim when he woke him up.

“I have an intruder that broke into my home,” the victim told 911 dispatchers, Fox 35 reports. “He’s got a damn machete and he’s a little whacked.”

The victim added: “I woke up on a mattress and there’s a guy lying next to me saying, ‘I love you.’ I’m weirded out. He’s got my machete in his hand.”

      1. A guy is in bed when some other guy with a machete enters his apartment and decides to lie next to him and says “I love you.” Ironic that it happened in Fruitsville. Maybe the intruder was imposter Ed. He is always posting about this kind of thing. Just can’t seem to leave it alone. #Freudian.

  3. The ’88 season was a tough one at the end. Turnovers killed USC vs. the domers in #1 vs. #2. I don’t think the domers even had 10 first downs the entire game, maybe 200 yards of offense but the TOs did the Trojans in. I still can’t stomach Lou Holtz.

    1. Holtz is definitely a USC hater. This is the guy who once said that USC stood for University of Spoiled Children. In that sense I don’t like him either. But when he starts to give out his wisdom(“Doctor Lou”)….he makes a lot of sense…..more sense than anyone I am hearing in the democratic party.

    2. Neuter Dame had 80 yards on the first or second play when Rice faked a pitch-out
and scampered untouched all the way to the end zone. Game effectively over!

      1. domers had about 125 yards of offense the rest of the day. That year had natty written all over it for USC until that game at the Coli.

    1. I have no problem with coming up with a solution to plastics. The whole garbage problem can be dealt with through technology and should be. We must find a way to stop dumping millions on tons of garbage in the ocean, rivers and lakes. These water sources are the lifeblood of our planet. But we’re not really even attacking those problems. We’re spending tons of money on CO2 reduction which isn’t the problem. CO2 is not causing any significant global warming.

      1. It isn’t even the USA that is causing such global problems, yet for some reason nobody gets called out by our leadership. I have travelled to several other countries and see the waste in the waters.

  5. Friday evening, enjoying a mai-tai, and watching the future of USC football at Los Alamitos High with Malachi Nelson, Makai Lemon, and some more fellas offered by usc.

Malachi is 14/15, 340 yards, 4 TD passes, they are ahead 34-0 midway through the second.

    1. Sounds like a Goliath vs a David-and-his-slingshot contest.
I will take Goliath every time
And when Goliath follows-through with an expected conquest,
That still will not render a correct reading of Goliath’s true strengths.

      1. George! I can’t “like” anything relating to you that contains the word “die”….. You WILL enjoy the Stanford game….and the game after that…and the game after that [I could go …but you get the picture]…

  6. Saturday morning, and I cannot think of a single thing to write about!

    — May as well go to work then; try to do something a little-productive today

I will try again on Sunday.

      1. Alright, So Cal, you just knocked my writer’s block
        clean off the block.

I have been encouraged to sue The Other, the creep.
We had a sports-betting CONTRACT that the little-man breached.
So I may as well throw a long-shot defamation action in there for kicks

  7. GT, haven’t seen “Last Night in SoHo” yet. But I did think of another to suggest, if you haven’t seen it…”Life As A House”, with Kevin Kline.

    1. Nice piece. Thanks for the post, 67. I think we fans are overlooking the running attack —- which might just be the difference maker this year.
If USC averages a bit over 200 rushing yards a game in 2022 —along with all our weapons in the pass game —we end up conference champs and get a chance to play for the big prize.
