Morning Buzz: USC Drops Depth Chart After Midnight

USC waited until 12:30 a.m. to finally release its depth chart.

There were no major surprises but boy does it show the dangers of the transfer portal. First, the depth chart.

REACTION: I said after Travis Dye and Austin Jones came to USC that tailback Darwin Barlow should transfer. He isn’t even listed at tailback.

I guarantee you Gary Bryant isn’t happy to be second-team but receivers rotate so he can play.

But look at some of these guys who transferred to USC: Defensive end Solomon Byrd came from Wyoming and is third string (at best). Defensive tackle Earl Barquet came from TCU and he’s co-third string. Latrell McCutchin came from Oklahoma and couldn’t beat out some inexperiened corners.

If I’m an opposing offensive coordinator, I’m going straight at the secondary. Corner Ceyair Wright played in two games last season. Nickel Jaylin Smith has one career start (at safety). Max Williams hasn’t played since 2020 and never played safety.

I don’t care that so many defensive line spots are not settled because those positions rotate a lot.

Let’s look at the offensive line: Cooper Lovelace can do the splits but he couldn’t make the two-deep. Joe Bryson, a walk-on from Colorado Mesa, is the second-string right guard. What does that say about all the scholarship linemen not on the depth chart?

Some guys who need to be concerned: Xavion Alford is the third-string strong safety. He was supposed to challenge to start. Raesjon Davis is the third-string middle linebacker after the coaches burned his redshirt year. Arizona State-transfer Eric Gentry just waltzed in and claimed the starting job. USC will have a 6-6 middle linebacker.

Whoever did the depth chart didn’t even spell walk-on kicker Denis Lynch’s name correctly. But he surprisingly won the job over Alex Stadthaus. Lincoln Riley mentioned Stadthaus as a team leader last week. He just won’t be the kicker. He will handle kickoffs, however.

    4. hi John, the starting lineup look like a community college, usc ain’t shit. the missus n me laugh when we see the offensive line. rice is horrible, the Trojans shld beat them, then get ass kicked by several teams after dat . Lincoln riley recruit just like helton. da portal transfers all look like Jc college player. I earn how 2 spell bett so I don’t sound like dumb Mutha fucker. Have Good day

  2. Great starting lineup for offense —we all knew the defense was gonna be a mix and match job. All in all, talentwise this team looks pretty much like one of those Oklahoma teams Riley put on the field for the last 5 years. Meaning…..

  3. This game means nothing. Maybe LR is using it to build a fire under some of those guys and give them some incentive to up their game. If I were Darwin Barlow, I would be very upset. He is an outstanding RB. Latrell McCutchin is an outstanding CB. He seems to be in the doghouse and has been there since he got here. But he can play. Cooper Lovelace is a project. I like the fact that Joe Bryson, a walk-on, is 2nd string. That’s telling everyone that your past means nothing. It’s what have you done for me lately. Anybody can start. Even a walk-on. Like I said before, If your MLB is 6’6″ and is tough enough to play MLB(and Gentry is), that’s great. It cuts down on one of the opposing QB’s main passing lanes.

    3. Right on parcelman007. The way I see it the coaches are giving some guys who have been available first reps. I don’t think some positions are settled the need this first game to evaluate for the depth chart for Stanford. Hopefully Rice will answer their questions about both sides. WR will rotate constantly it will be hot so I see like starters getting 60% of the time. All I can say is when you get your opportunity make a play so you will keep getting reps. Same for CB n S.

      1. They are still evaluating their talent. Rice will be like a glorified scrimmage. They are still not set on their starters and the guys who will get a lot of PT

  5. I see why Riley limits media/people at practices. Amazing how others know more than the Coaches with all the second guesses on the Depth Chart. My goodness, it’s just a depth chart and we will need all the players to be ready regardless if they are 1 or 3 on a chart.

    All this crap about so-so should leave or be so upset because of where they are on a depth chart is such BS.

    Just amazing! some of these folks surely must be closet UCLA fans.

      2. No, I’m not on staff but been around for a long time. The problem is people cry because practices aren’t open. They cry when the Depth chart comes out. Have way too many with no knowledge of what’s happening giving opinions that unfortunately others take as truth. I agree with Wolf most of the time but his comments on the Depth Chart are pure trash. That was fine when Helton was here, but he’s gone so he can lighten up on the negativity.

    I hope they bring this back out. Right before the players would come out of the tunnel. Just like the Pete Carroll days. All pumped up ready for battle.

  14. There’s always more than one way to see a depth chart. I choose to see it as a result of competition in practice. Riley looks players in the eyes, as opposed to kissing players on the ass (ala Helton). Some players read too much of their own press clippings. They think their position is based on past performance, and lolligag at practice. The players who start are the ones who show they should start based on their actions in practice.
    Also the chart is just a suggestion. No spot is left open if the first name on the chart has a hangnail on the morning of the game.

    Have you ever met Dick Butkus? I don’t think you have. If you had, you would have seen that Butkus is 6’6″ and he did alright at middle lber for Chicago. BTW, his son, Matt, played at Loyola and at SC.

    You got to realize, Riley has not seen these guys play in a real situation. Once he see’s them on film against Rice and Stanford, then he will make adjustments on who to start. This is not a group with 3-4 years of experience with the coach or each other. Some of the players showed up in June. Don’t get into a tizzy about the chart. Let’s see what happens on and after the Rice game.

  24. The offensive line was rated third in the nation by Pro Football Focus. The skill positions at USC on the offensive side are just dynamite.

    The coaches talked alot about back and forth between the offense and defense dominating. So either the offense is not as good as we think or the defense is better than we think? or they were lying?

    Actually, the point Scott makes here just isnt true. Many transfer players are starting. Some of the transfers that are not playing had injuries that limited their practice, and they might recover a starting position when they get up to speed.

    I think the roster changes over the season on the defensive side. The coaches are talking alot about the roster evolving over the season.

    Why is Gentry so surprising? He was a freshman all -american last year.
