USC Notes: A Hint On Future Big Ten Expansion?

Ohio State athletic director Gene Smith had Mike Bohn on his podcast. Yes, he has a podcast.

“There were really only two schools that made sense for us (for Big Ten expansion), and it’s USC and UCLA,” Smith said.

Does that mean Smith, who is a big-time power broker in college athletics, does not endorse future expansion? If he was against it, it would be difficult to pull more expansion off.

  • Lincoln Riley addressed Caleb Williams not speaking to the media on Wednesday.

“Yesterday, he had a couple things going on, so didn’t do it,” Riley said. “But that won’t affect his media availability going forward.”

  • Here are the tipoff times and TV listings for the USC 2022-23 basketball schedule.

      1. Funny, So Cal.
But WAS there something going on with Caleb? Riley is very savvy when it comes to public relations —and he gave Caleb a pretty lengthy cooling off period. Probably not a biggie —but he [Caleb] didn’t seem like he wanted to listen to Riley when he was on the sidelines midway thru the 4th — was he just trying to pump himself up or was there something else going on.
At this point we probably won’t get an unrehearsed answer.

      1. We’re gonna get a chance to see if Caleb can handle the pressure brought by a true Top 5 Defense in two weeks when he arrives in a place called Utah.

      2. Tebow, you really should be more concerned with how the Ruins are going to do tomorrow night against the Dogs!

Something tells me they’re gonna get chewed up like Milkbone biscuits.

      3. Washington is going to mop the floor with UCLA the same way they would mop the floor with USC.

Washington is the class of the PAC 12 this year

      4. One thing about Caleb is see what happens when you have players making millions with commercials. Your right Tebowobama. I like your opinions. But he will get his head out the sand, against ASU and our march to CFP will continue I predicted everything that is happening with our team. Do you have a team or just a USC hater?

      5. Never a good idea to put USC and UCLA in the same category…

    1. Honestly –It would be better for him [and way better for the team] if he puts the Heisman outta his mind completely …

      1. I don’t think that any real Heisman trophy candidate who is projected as a possible winner will ever totally(and the key word is totally) put the Heisman out of their mind. I agree…..they must put the team first and concentrate solely on the next game but if they know that they have a high chance of winning the Heisman, that will always be a factor(and a motivator) in their thinking.
If they can discipline their mind to just concentrate on the next game then, yeah, that would probably be the best practice towards actually winning the Heisman.

      2. I agree MG, as he develops the mental aspects of dealing with adverse conditions like crowd noise. He must be able to adjust line protections and get the ball out to his play makers. Forget the Heisman he is not winning it. The last game really killed his chances. Focus on your mechanics because his accuracy is off because he’s not balanced. Hopefully he can forget about individual goals and focus on team.

      3. If you get all bent cuz you’ve missed on 5 passes in a row…and you start thinking “what good is life if I can’t win the Heisman?!” you’re guaranteeing yourself [and your team] a real fucked up season. Forget the award and go win all your games. That’s what you’re there for.

    2. I did not see 2022 as Caleb’s Heisman year, but I’ll follow the line of thinking here at ISUCS-SW.

Irrespective, all Heisman winners have a bad game the year that they win the trophy (maybe Charles White was the exception?). I recall sitting in the dimly lit LA Coliseum in 1980 watching George Rogers struggle against the Trojan D for 3 quarters. With the game decided, he broke out for a long run in garbage time and ended up with 140 tough yards. Still got the Heisman, though Marcus had a much better year in 1980 playing against solid competition. U South Carolina was independant at the time and played patsies most of the year.

Now 13 games into his CFB career, Caleb is well on his way to being a memorable CFB QB. Riles will get him there.

BTW, who was a better coach for Jalen Hurts’ QB career.
Jalen is getting a ton of positive press!

      1. Northwestern planning for a new stadium. Apparently UCLA doesn’t have room for any more students let alone a new stadium on its campus.

I am merely smart enough to know the entire world would have been better off with him still in office than an 80 year old with dementia. And a VP who is even worse!

He is not my guy, though I’ll support him if he’s the 2024 nominee. The Left won’t nominate a moderate enough candidate for those of us who are in between the 40 yard lines. (OK, 30 yard lines.)

MY preference would be a Haley-Cotton ticket in 2024.

      1. I’m starting to think they should play their games to a standing crowd of a few dozen on their practice field. Sure, the games wouldn’t count under NCAA rules cuz they weren’t played on a 100 yard field ….but, really, what’s the difference?

  1. An AD with a podcast!? Would you look at the ego on Gene Smith!? He might as well be jumping up and down, waving his arms, wearing a sandwich board, screaming “NFL look at me!” Ohio State football has been on auto-pilot since it hired Urban Meyer a decade ago. Success has many fathers.

  2. UCLA is really good. Actually, both of those teams are really good. Actually, the Pac-12 is really good. Our cupcake schedule has turned into a pretty solid schedule.

    1. Actually they are better than we thought. Washington’s defense got gashed by DTR. Well looks like it comes down to Utah Washington St. & SUCLA ND so we will SOS going forward meeting the winner of Oregon Washongton if they are both tied at the end of season . Oregon will have 2 losses as well as Wzshongton.
