Sunday Buzz: Let’s Dissect USC’s Entire Performance

The USC defense gave up touchdowns in five of Utah’s final six possessions. The sixth possession was a fumble at the 3-yard line.

That’s the kind of defense Clancy Pendergast and Todd Orlando would be proud of.

None of it was new. I harped on the defense’s ability to give up all kinds of yards every week. Sometimes, it was vs. the run and sometimes the pass.

But the fanboy media, which tries to create myths in the offseason about the offensive line or certain players, tried to rehabilitate the defense. The culmination was the Washington State game, where they ignored Jaylen Jenkins rushing for 130 yards. This is the same Washington State team that produced 10 points last night at Oregon State.

USC’s defense has plenty of holes. It gets worse when no adjustments are made to cover the tight end and it tries to survive in a bend-but-don’t-break mentality.

  • Let’s not let the offense off the hook either. The offensive line has Caleb Williams running for his life too often and that’s when drives stalled out. It’s happened in recent games prior to Utah too. So again, not a surprise.
  • There’s also been a mythology about Lincoln Riley, mainly because people were so sick of Clay Helton. Riley is a good coach but not beyond reproach. He wasn’t coaching aggressively at the end of the game. He arrogantly decided Utah might score a TD and then would go to overtime.

So he never called timeout while Utah was burning precious seconds off the clock near the goal line. These things never bite you against the Fresno States and Stanfords but then you play a better-than-average team and boom!

  • Then, the fans. I had some on twitter telling me a couple weeks ago that USC could beat Georgia. These people see what they want to see at games. And they are clueless.
  • I said this last night: This loss isn’t that big a deal. It doesn’t matter USC lost if the Trojans win their next five games. I expect USC to win its next five games. If it fixes some of the nagging problems. But too many were getting carried away and waving a towel because USC beat a bunch of fairly mediocre teams. Now back to reality.

  1. To be fair, the offensive line was a big part of USC gaining 555 yards against the best defense in the Pac 12. To be fair to Grinch, no one could be a world beater with the players he inherited from Helton —at least he has them fighting till the end of the game. We ALL knew going into the season that the offense would carry the day & the defense and special teams were the weak sisters. The only Big Surprise was USC couldn’t win in a shootout. Even our illustrious leader, Mister Scott Wolf, predicted we’d be winning games 76-75. I think that’s what we all thought. High scoring affairs with US coming out on top.

    1. Why was Caleb Williams crying like a bitch after the game, and why are his fingernails painted PINK? The cameras focused in on that prior to the game. 😂😂. I’m thinking dude has a little sugar in his tank 😂

      1. I think SC team gave its all and it would be emotionally draining on top of physical…if utah had played like that vs ucla, the out come would have been different…I know little about finger nails and some people are weird…

      2. Sorry, MG, but crying doesnt make you weak, people who hold their emotions in are the ones that are operating out of fear of showing emotions. It shows that he cares alot about winning. Do you really care about whatever his sexual preferences are? I dont. The only thing I dont like are people that have to make their sexuality into a public spectacle, which he has not.

    3. Michael:
The game plan was to stop the Ute run game and make Rising beat us with his arm. Utah had only one “go to” WR in Vele, and he was not much. We KNEW they loved to use the TE’s–witness Brad Kuithe, et al.
I’m not sure their TE”s and WR’s could beat us. In the first half Utah had about 40 yards rushing. The INT by Bullock in the endzone was a picadore’s stab and took the crowd out of the game….

      And then…

I think Grinch could have schemed a better pass rush and dropped Gentry a little deeper to get into the TE’s routes. But in the end, a hyped stadium and team at altitude with the Zebras working for them prevailed. I expect USC D to play very well for the next 3 games and then get gashed by UCLA. All in all, I’m still supporting Grinch.

      1. Me too. It’s too easy to blame Grinch for Helton’s recruiting. Give him some time. He’s smart and he’s a good leader.
Btw, over spring practice Chip told Phil Steele that his Tight End room is the deepest on his team. That doesn’t bode well for us. Add in Charbonnet & DTR….and us [maybe] missing Addison and Gentry and there’s trouble brewing on the Rose Bowl horizon. However, if we’re healthy……

      1. Here’s the deal, Alv — the pac 12 refs are paid by the pac 12 which is probably gonna go under eventually because of USC & UCLA leaving —in other words, their livelihood could be in jeopardy cuz of US […and let’s face it –NO other conference is gonna pick up pac 12 officials —they’re an embarrassment to the game & everybody knows it]. Given this, SOMEBODY is gonna have to ask that USC games are officiated by outside crews — highschool refs will be a big step up.
You can’t have the people you’re probably eventually putting outta work refereeing your games. That’s not an optimal situation.

  4. Scotty – your critique is fair and accepted. However, the short comings are not because of the scheme in large part.Riley had a very limited time to put together a serviceable roster and what we have is what he was able to assemble in that time. The achilles heel is talent. The trojans are doing it with bailing wire and band aids for now.Everybody on this blog knows that games are won in the trenches.Although the schedule is weak, I’ll still take what we have now – fewer penalties, better effort, recruiting hopes restored, etc. UCLA and Utah will graduate many players and USC will close the gap.If Grinch did have a pass rush the secondary wouldn’t have to resort to all the grabbing. If the offensive line gave Caleb more time he would be even more prolific. But if “Ifs” and “Buts” were candy and nuts – oh, what a party we’d have.Remember what Howard Cosell said to O.J. in the booth on Monday Night Football, Scott. He said, “Juice, you have a tremendous grasp on the obvious!” And for that matter, Scott – so do you.

    1. Scott calls out these so called “fanboys”, but his expectancy of USC is on level of a fanboy himself. What LR has done with the mess he inherited has been really good.
It’s going to take 2-3 years to develop and build a good program. Saban in his first year lost at home to Louisiana-Monroe. I don’t think LR is on the same level as Saban, but I believe he can build and actually win a National Title at USC.
I’m sure the “fanboys” on who write Scott on Twitter do so in order to rile him up.

    2. ….I think the gap is already closed, though we will need to develop a group to follow this “graduating/matriculating” class.

UCLA is doing well because of DTR playing about 50+ games under center. QB’s never have that level of experience anymore. He won’t play in the NFL. DTR has had 5 years in the Kelly system. They are good this year. Expect a drop off in 2023.

Utah is OK. Same brand of football every year. Their defense now officially sucks. Look at OSU in the Rose Bowl, UCLA (in the Rose Bowl), and USC last night.

The gap is already closed. This is a good program and our defense will be better this year and next.

      1. you are correct…the defense is a group that has never played together, and has a coach they never have played for…the offense is veteran and most have played together, a lot of them have played for this coach…next year will be better.

  6. Blistering commentary by Wolf that you will get nowhere else but here on Inside USC– actually, it is a salient point about Wiley refusing to use his time-outs when Utah was driving for what looked like a certain inevitable touchdown to at least equal the score.

Whether Utah tied or went ahead should have been irrelevant to the decision-making process, a team must try to win in regular time, but apparently Wiley was content to allow the clock to run out “knowing” the game was going to overtime and was shocked by the 2-pointer decision, thus leaving Wiley with his 2 time-outs but his boys a measly 40-seconds or so to counter-attack when Troy should have had about a minute-20 is unpardonable.

So they finally got that first loss. I am not worried about it, I didn’t think they would go to the NC anyway. Let’s see if anyone learned a lesson from it all, including the coaching staff in particular. Coaching for once in my opinion gets a low grade. Time management was not good, some play calling not timely, some adjustments not made, and then there was the officiating. USC in the end lost, and the way I saw it played out, they should have.”

      1. MG– Here is another way of looking at the “if-but” possibilities,
what if the plays you find disturbing were reversed in SC’s favor,
there is no telling that Utah might have still pulled out the victory because there was plenty of time left.

And Utah could have had more points by not fumbling on SC’s 3-yard line and not missing a field goal try.

Anyway, I have spent much of the day in mourning, so time to move on and return to my customary mental-state of ‘living happily ever after’

But I will say this: to win a game like that you need a little luck. But the egregious roughing call that negated the interception in the end zone was the exact opposite. Hard to wins games like that when you play within the rules and they still eff you.

  10. I’ve stated this before on this blog, USC is no where near being a CFP playoff team because of issues on the offensive and defensive lines, and I’m sure CLR knows this. All of this goes back to the lack of recruiting quality players at those positions the last five years. One move I would like to see CLR make is to hire Coach O as d-line coach and recruiting coordinator. With his connections in the southeast he can bring in the type of lineman that would help USC compete with the elite teams.

No one here talks about the treatment USC received before the game. The band is stuck up into the highest seats furthest away from the field. Tickets are made hard to purchase for Trojan supporters and refs who work USC practices are never allowed to work USC games on the road. Since you speak with coaches Mr. Wolf, then ask them why this conference has such a crab mentality of keeping all schools equal? It’s truly a socialist ideology of the Pac 12.

Tough to watch Kincaid go off. But the rest of the team really did not contribute much. The run game yardage was accrued late in the second half. Otherwise, we were stuffing their run game. The WR’s had a few key catches.

If I really cared, I’d rewatch the game (I can’t whilst on vacation without hulu) and tabulate how many times our D got a 3rd and long stop only to have the Zebras find a way to keep the Utah O on the field.
The Bullock INT in the End Zone was the most egregious example.

They’re still a year or more away. But I would probably say that they are way ahead of schedule. Even the Wolfman himself said that he expects them to win their next 5 games. That would mean that they finish the regular season 11-1. I don’t think anyone expected that. Before the season I was seeing predictions like 8-4 and 9-3. A few pundants even said 7-5.
As far as the towels are concerned…..I was watching the Alabama-Tennessee game and they were waving the towels on the Volunteers sideline. A lot of teams do that.

At the beginning of the season if you were told USC would be 6-1, with last minute loss of 1 point to Utah (in Utah), are you saying you would call Riley an only “good” coach? I think people would say he was a great coach to pull that off.

  16. Grinch had the majority of this year’s Oklahoma’s defense under him and struggled against the Big 12 last year. He’s working with 10 out of 33/the 3-depth chart players he brought in to play defense for him this year, year one. Anything they accomplish this year will pale in comparison to next year, unless they get more talented and fundamentally sound. The eye discipline was poor and shocking considering its the same offense as Stanford and David Shaw. Max Williams had a bad coverage game. Lee struggled in pass defense and the fact they can’t stick a defender on the receiver Kincaid is troubling. The need for small D-tackles is baffling. Bigger tackles on defense means fewer double teams. Utah constantly doubled Pili and no linebacker made the commitment to blow up the gaps and instead played read on running downs. Bottom line? Grinch Mrs to tweak his one gap philosophy. Unless Aaron Donald is on your line, you need two gap monsters to keep your backers clean and safeties mean.

Another problem is the refs with the way they call PI RP Targeting giving Utah chances to keep USC offense on the sidelines. 22. Hard to gripe about a Coach who gets his fellas to score 42 and gain 550 yds against a notoriously stout D which was ranked #19 prior to last night. A few offensive play calls were not great, but WTF? About 9 yards per play? I thought Riles should have let Utah score the TD with about 2.5 minutes left to play. Preserve the TO’s. Go the length of the field for the GW FG. That is what Belichick would have done.

One T/O by this offense and a bunch of T/O by our D.

The D stopped the run game for 3 QTR’s. Had we built the lead we were working on, the run game would have never materialized. Kyle loves the run game. We knew he loves his TE pass game and we failed to come up with a few tweaks to get some stops on that part. The D frequently had Rising at 3rd and long and came up with a BUNCH of key stops–only to have the Zebra intervene. I don’t recall much blitzing in either half, and dropping 7 sure did not slow down Rising/Kincaid. Blitz?

Kyle used to be proud of his S/T–his S/T are horrible and ours are improving. They had one good punt return which really hurt us.

Our coach is better, our players play better and we are the better team.
Their fans might be better at home?
