Normal Service Resumed For Steve Sarkisian

Stop if you’ve heard this before:

  • Steve Sarkisian blew a double-digit lead in the second half.
  • The final 10 Texas possessions were punt, punt, punt, punt, field goal, punt, punt, missed FG, interception and interception.
  • The Longhorns are 5-3.
  • And in a twist, today’s penalties were: Texas 14, Oklahoma State 0.

      1. Bourbon,
Yes, it was odd. It seemed if he didn’t immediately find his receiver he just frisbee’d it out of bounds.

    1. It’ll probably take a miracle —but, yes, I think Sark might just possibly reach 7!

Great DC. Likely not good HC material.
I think that there is a difference.

To wit, Paul Hackett a great OC/QB coach.
        Never much of a HC.
Here in Denver, we are thinking the same of his son, Nathaniel.

  2. That just proves what I have always said…..Sark is a good OC but not a great HC. It’s like Mario Cristobal…..a good saleman and who can fast talk players into committing to his program but not a great HC.
Texas 14 penalties and OSU none…..that could have something to do with the crowd…..they played in Oklahoma. The loud crowds even influence the officials.
SC is undefeated and they go into that nuthouse in Utah and lose. UCLA is undefeated and they go into the nuthouse in Oregon and they lose.
Loud crowds are a major factor in who wins and loses. That’s why I encourage towel waving. If it will get the crowd going, I’m for it. My only complaint with towel waving is that it isn’t enough. They should be putting “GET LOUD” or “NOISE” or something like that on the big screen at the coliseum.
One of the challenges that LR faces is how to turn the coliseum into a nuthouse like Oregon and Utah. Crazy crowds are a definite advantage to the hometeam. They say “the crowd can’t beat you….they are in the stands not on the field”. I say…..”RUBBISH”

  3. Won’t happen, Parcelman, L.A. sports fan will never yell like they do in Autzen Stadium, Eugene, Oregon, because, well, because we are L.A. and it is not cool to ever lose your cool, or something like that, who knows, but it takes a lot to get L.A. sports fans to show much passion.

But you are right, football (and basketball) are the two venues where fans can make a difference, not only in jamming the opponent’s signals but the psychological lift they give to their team while simultaneously draining the opponent of their fight to win

    1. The “chill So Cal fan” is a story dating back to the 60’s or 70’s LJ.
Man, I recall going to watch Showtime with Magic and Worthy (et al) and they’d be runnin’ and gunnin’ and the Laker fan base would be
      “ho hum.”

But all of us agree that we need to rock the Coli better.

On the other side, last time I went to the Pac 12 champ game in Santa Clara, we rocked the stadium and Stanford. Yes, it took an awesome goal-line stand to accomplish it, but we rocked a Stanford “home game.”

Every other year, the Trojans outnumber the Buffs fans at CU.
We do pretty well on the road…other than at Utah.

      Final point…
We have just signed up to go to Penn State and they will have a white-out/sell out when we go there. Most of the B1G schools have great home field advantage. USC and LA will need to up our game.

  4. I remember how loud the Coliseum got when Ed Orgeron led USC to an upset over Stanford. It takes time to create that environment. Maybe AD Bohn can make the games more fan friendly like allowing tailgating again?

  5. USC fans should buy up all the championship game tickets they can afford. That way they can control the sound in the stadium. The crowd at the Oregon game was crazy loud. Fans can give an advantage to their team by being there.

    1. I looked a few weeks ago at tickets for Vegas.
The prices were obscene, and you don’t know which side of the stadium your team/fans will be on.

Paying a boat-load right now to sit with a bunch of Bruin (unlikely) or Utah (Somewhat likely) or Dux (likely) fans would not be palatable for me.

I’ll be paying top dollar for the Vegas ticket and sitting with my homeboys.

      Just gotta run the table.

  6. If there were an echo effect in the Wolf’s forsaken-den it would resound as in ‘It takes a lot to get L.A. fans to show much passion,’ and certainly the Stanford and 1999 sucla games where SC rushed the field for the only times in their history were such important contests that they got the usually staid SC crowd into the game, and there were others as recently mentioned in 1964 and 1974 but it is a rare occasion when the Trojan fans give their team a home field advantage although I have learned to accept this L.A.-style ‘Little-passion for Sports’ indictment as the reality,
but I am still going to pout over it because I can’t escape out of it

Still, as has been said before, being AT the game versus watching it on your television
is a little like watching a film showcasing love-making,
versus you Actually doing the stuff yourself

    1. I get what you’re saying, John….and you’re right. It’s better for our team to have fans screaming in the stands than in their living rooms…..but… when it comes to analogies about lovemaking — let’s kick the “getting- involved-o-meter” up one notch —how do the players feel about the fans watching them in the stands?

      1. Thanks for reminding me, Michael, some would rather watch than participate

And one positive about Sark is how he hit bottom at SC but apparently has pulled himself up by the bootstraps and had a good gig with Satan Saban that parlayed into an even sweeter deal with Texas. I hope after he is fired by the Longhorns he doesn’t return to the bottom again.

  7. Sark is not a good coach great offensive coordinator and recruiter. with the players at Alabama he was hailed as great OC. I never thought he was good at Washington only had 1 good season there. Then we hired him and all we did is throw to Lee , and someone else when open. He will be fired if Manning doesn’t sign with UT. I wonder what’s going on his mind after this loss. Maybe he decides to go to Alabama or Georgia?

    1. I can’t say for sure but Manning seems to be a little over rated to me……maybe just because he is a Manning. I can’t be dogmatic about that because I have just watched some highlight films on him from Hudl but I really don’t think that he is as good as Malachi Nelson and I think that there are others out there that are just as good or better than him.

If you think that he is smart for going to Texas and avoiding the SEC, then maybe he is not too smart after all……..Texas is moving to the SEC.

    1. I vaguely recall that, World, but was that NCAA pressure so great that he was effectively forced out of Oregon?– I don’t know, the Ducks would not have been slapped with USC-grade sanctions, maybe no bowls for a year or two.

      2. You forget that Mark Emmert was affiliated with the University of Washington. He would have enjoyed seeing Oregon knocked down without his personal involvement while being imperious as president of the cabal/NCAA.

    2. Show cause Chip?
He pulled a Pete Carroll and went to the NFL just before sanctions fell.
That said, Oregon got off far easier than USC despite a systematic corruption for multiple players.

      USC? One kid’s parents.
Oregon? System wide recruiting and benefit corruption.

  8. Sark being the lead to this thread…

UT still ranks # 6 per the FPI computer despite a 5-3 record, with a computer score of 19–just below Tenn and just above Clemson (who should have lost at home yesterday IMHO). Sark has coached the #8 toughest schedule so far, but their remaining SOS is about #40.

To support the folks here at IUSCSW, the Computer has Sark going 8-4 this year…Improvement over 7 win Sark.

  9. …and finally with the computers (FPI)…

Utah took a bye week but moved up in the Computer’s ranking. WTF?
LSU, with a nice win vs the Fighting Kiffins, moved up 2 spots despite 2 ugly losses earlier this year.

USC remained the #10 team per FPI, based on an OFFENSE WHICH IS PERCEIVED BY THE COMPUTER TO BE #2 in all of CFB. We put up tons of points on two very good defenses–Utah and Wazzu (#18 in CFB). Indeed, our offensive performance vs UTAH last week dropped Utah from top 10 defense to now #34. USC plays 3 pretty bad defenses over the next 2 weeks, then a UCLA defense which is about as bad as our defense, then a pretty good defense in ND (ranked about the same as Utah).

The computer has us going 10.6 and 2.1, which begs the question from our friend EdG, “how do we get a .6 win?” 22% chance of running the table and 33% chance of winning the conference.

We have a lot to talk about going into November!
