Lincoln Riley said today his confidence in kicker Denis Lynch is “very high.” Riley said Lynch missed the first FG because the holder’s foot was in his way.
Riley also spoke about the state of football in Southern California.
“I think people need to recognize that a lot of things have changed,” he said. “This program’s on a great trajectory. Chip (Kelly) has done a great job at UCLA. The home games at UCLA need to look like that, they do. Our home games need to be full, they do.”
Riley said he embraces the season finishing with a tough stretch of games.
“You have to embrace it,” he said. “It’s fun playing really good competition in cool venues with a lot of things on the line.
“I do think (the players) have a sense for it. We’re certainly not going to minimize the moment. I’m not worried about that. It’s probably more about us just staying focused on process and how can we get better.”
REACTION: Riley acknowledging the attendance at USC and UCLA games shows how the crowds this year have been generally disappointing. But if you want to draw more fans, you have to play good teams too. Neither USC nor UCLA has offered fans much of a schedule.

This is where USC is blessed with Bohn’s foresight – he rid the team of the goofy incompetent cancer that was 100% Helton, early last year. That brought immediate relief that finally ‘Claytonska’ was gone. He then stealthily began to create a list of potential replacements and when the exact moment was right for the move Bohn pounced with an offer that was impossible for Riley to decline. Had that been refused he had plans on moving elsewhere but it wasn’t.
I’d say Bohn is smart enough to have a short list that is constantly updated for any eventuality unlike the lack of foresight shown by ‘the princesses’ AD Jack Swarbrick hiring a assistant coach who had never been a head coach before as the new head coach for the Irish…..think the same nonsense the NYY have engaged in for 5 straight years i.e. Aaron Boone….never had managed a single baseball game at any level given the manger position with the NYY.
See where MS Head Coach Lane Kiffin is up to his old tricks ‘denying’ interest in Auburn but also copying and pasting his replies for all to see his lack of ‘interest’?

Bohn and whatshername were 2-3 years too late on the change…but they did something when SC was in ICU…Kiff has a better job at ‘Ol Miss than auburn…what he does is his business, but I would not go to auburn.

How ‘…2-3 years too late on the change…’ do you figure that?
Bohn did an outstanding year 3 … Helton’s contract was top heavy in buy out thanks to Swann. Thanks to Folt we didn’t have to deal with Meyer’s ‘..3 and done…’ routine. In your time frame just who was going to be hired to replace Helton? Riley was in the middle of his own contract – unavailable.
No one expected this record this late in year 1 anyone who claims they did has no idea how difficult this was to come close to but Bohn made the hire and Riley has more than delivered – win Saturday 11 – 1 heading to Las Vegas for the Pac12 CCG

Notre Dame was desperate after Luke Fickell turned them down because he ain’t trying to rebuild at Notre Dame what he already has. Clay was cheaper to keeper until the losing became more expensive. That’s just the way it is.

After missing 2 kicks SC’s field goal kicker Lynch hit a clutch one at the end of the half, his longest ever at I believe 49 yards, which brought SC to 20-21 which had to have been demoralizing for sucla inasmuch as they outplayed SC in that first half
Before SC became the Trojans it was called the SC Methodists and sometimes the ‘Fighting Methodists,’ not to be confused with the ‘Fighting Irish’ whose rural campus, only 8000 students and Catholic foundation is in contrast to USC’s urban campus, 44,000 students and no religious preferences

LJ,
SC was founded by a Methodist, a Jew, and a Catholic. Plus they still have that church on campus nea the dental school and they used to have the Catholic Chapel on Campus just south of the practice field and now a new building is there. Then you have St. Caruso (PUN) Catholic Church just a couple of blocks north of SC. I would say they have a religous presence there.

There were two churches and a synagogue in a small California town: Methodist, Catholic and Jewish.
Each church was overrun with pesky squirrels. One day, the Jews called a meeting to decide what to do about the squirrels. After much prayer and consideration they determined they were not in a position to harm any of God’s creatures.
So, the Methodists humanely trapped the squirrels and set them free a few miles outside of town. Three days later, the squirrels were back.
Then the Jews got together, humanely trapped the squirrels and set them free more than a dozen miles outside of town. About a week later, the squirrels were back.
It was only the Catholics who were able to come up with the best and most effective solution:
They baptized the squirrels and registered them as members of the church. Now they see them only on Christmas and Easter.

USC hired the right coach. Not just because of the turnaround from last year, but one can see he is the type of guy who can recruit and coach and create a team that cares about the group more than the individual. Glad it wasn’t Cristobal or Venables or any of the other names discussed.
The lack of a “team” was so obvious under Helton. The lack of discipline, the nonchalant sidelines where players looked like they could care less, all the chaos on the field. No wonder the team underperformed. Those days are gone for good.

They haven’t offered much of a schedule because they are in the Pac12. Now when the B1G comes to town will that be good enough? Now I suppose Wolf wants a home/home with Georgia for an out of conf game. Maybe throw in Clemson also. Meanwhile the sec schedules little sisters, and Mercer.

USC had a good schedule this year. I think 5 teams in the PAC 12 – USC, UCLA, Oregon, Utah, and Washington are legitimate top 20 teams and Oregon State and Washington State are both solid. USC played 4 good teams and will play 2 more in ND and likely Oregon in the PAC 12 championship game. Most of the PAC 12 teams including the above and Arizona have good offenses and quarterbacks and have the potential of knocking off good teams. I wonder if Ohio State and Michigan could have gone through USC’s schedule and remained undefeated. I doubt it.

Goober: You are a master of avoiding the question or the response called for in the statement. Did not ask for a reference on SOS. Do you believe Ohio St. and Michigan would go undefeated against USC’s schedule? Yes or No. Utah, and UCLA away, Notre Dame, and Oregon in Vegas is a tough schedule. Your a former college football player, you should have enough knowledge to weigh in on an opinion without referencing some outside source. Unless you are a bs artist and never were a college football player.

I have some concerns this game could be perceived as a “trap game” with the players looking ahead to the PAC12 title game……2006 is a prime example, two TD favorites over UCLA and we get beat 13-9 and flush a natty down the drain

a better example of a trap game would be oregon-oregon state

I would lean toward Washington also. IMO, Oregon has a better offense, and they can run and pass the ball with efficiency vs Washington’s bread and butter has been placed on the shoulders of Penix’s passing, one-dimensional.
Against either team, it comes down to our defense making stops and stealing a few possessions……OUR OFFENSE WILL SCORE!

UCLA and ND are USC’s biggest rivals. By definition, they are not trap games. If you can not get excited to play in these games there is something wrong with you. Frankly Goober, as a former college football player, I would think that you would know what a trap game is about.

It’s obvious you have no clue how to handicap a football game. MG, We have a Committee member explaining that USC defense must show them they are worthy. Sounds like the conspiracy theories are already starting in the backroom. LSU will not upset GA. Now the talk is Alabama is seriously being in the mix as well as Clemson which is pathetic. Their SOS is not good. A lot of these teams are being in the mix due to reputation, n they have won a championship ditto Alabama Clemson Ohio State Georgia. We must be able to show the Committee against ND, we can physically compete with teams that run. Sounds like they don’t any blowouts in the CFP.
