USC Morning Buzz: The Path To CFP Is Clear

Did you get outraged because USC was not ranked about LSU?

Here’s the deal: USC will make the College Football Playoff if it wins out, as long as TCU doesn’t go undefeated and LSU doesn’t win the SEC. Frankly, if LSU wins the SEC, they should go.

The fact USC got snubbed should actually please the Trojans’ fans who prefer a trip to the Rose Bowl. I’m not one of those people who gets thrilled from a trip to Pasadena. I’d rather go to Atlanta.

Naturally, Fox Sports, which is a USC cheering gallery, has Newport Beach resident Joel Klatt pouring water on the entire system.

      1. I really want to see TCU lose and we get the #3 rank, which allows us to skip Georgia in the first game. I think we have a chance to stay close to Ohio State and even win the game with a little luck.

But none of that really matters if USC loses either of the next two games. 10-1 is a real great season, no matter what happens from here out. I am pretty sure that CW and JA will keep us in the next two games, no matter what else happens on the field.

  1. First thing looking back, in reference to those pictures above: what the hell were Marcus Allen and John Robinson doing at LSU.

About the CFP: if Michigan loses to OSU they should be out. Not sure what happens if MI wins. If LSU wins SEC championship game two teams will probably go from the SEC. TCU is in with the win out with a Loss, but of course we need not mention any of these scenarios until USC takes care of business and wins it’s next two games.

All and all I believe USC will be in if they win out.

      1. Is there such a thing? I guess anyone who does say yes will also say it’s next to the unused condom in my wallet. Which reminds me, never joke with the cashier about buying condoms. After my daughter was born we went to Fedco and one of the numerous things we bought was a large box (36) of condoms. I quipped “3year supply” the cashier and I chuckled until my wife chimed in with “6.” (and she made it look like that for a while too. )

  4. TCU must be doing something right. 11-0, their strength of schedule is 9th, and their recruiting classes over the last 3 years are ranked 63th, 24th, 29th, and 28th. Maybe they had a great year in the portal?

Their coach is Sonny Dykes, who got fired from Cal. Speaking of Cal75, I hope you are ok, brother.

  5. What a funny situation. Last year at this time most of us were worried about not getting into a bowl game and knowing only that Helton was done, and we were expecting another long rebuilding process.
Now we are worried about being snubbed by a greedy bunch of football barons who control the invitations to one game a year.
    Perspective is a weird thing.

  6. THE ONLY THING THAT MATTERS IS BEATING NOTRE DAME.

Given the 2024 move to the Big Ten, the USC-ND now takes on more importance. It was already the Trojans’ most important rivalry, now it is more so.

    BEAT THE IRISH!
(for these reasons, in this order of importance):
For an 11th win this year.
For an end to their four game winning streak against USC.
    For a national prestige.
For a boost to national recruiting.
For a chance to possibly make it to the CFP.

  7. I like Joel Klatt but I have no idea what he’s talking about. The rankings make perfect sense based on results through Week 13. If USC wins out, they’re likely in the 4 spot unless there is some major chaos. Save your whining for the final rankings.

  8. Y’all are taking the bait….

    1. Beat a really tough and improving Notre Dame team Saturday.*
    2. Worry about the rest of this stuff on Sunday AM.

*8-1 since switching from Buchner to Pyne at QB, including beating some strong teams. The loss to Stanford with Pyne at the helm is
vexing. Let’s hope THAT ND team shows up on Saturday (unlikely).

  9. Assuming all other favorites win out, if LSU beats Georgia could it be–
    OHIO ST or Michigan
    TCU
    LSU
    Georgia

Or Michigan beats Ohio St another possible SC nightmare–
    Georgia
    TCU
    Michigan
    Ohio St

However, the odds favor SC for that 4-Spot if Troy wins out–
TCU still has Kansas St who played them tough early in the season
LSU will be big underdog against Georgia

  10. TCU and Michigan both came within a whisker of losing last week, which would have resulted in a reshuffling–
    Georgia
    Ohio St
    Michigan
    USC
    Alabama?

    1. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Oregon State beat Oregon(at OSU), Washington State beat Washington(at WSU) and Iowa State beat TCU. Iowa State has lost 7 out of their last 8 games. This is what they lost by: 3, 3, 1, 3, 14, 6 and 4 points. Iowa State is due to pull one of these close games out. Their chances are a little less of winning because they are playing at TCU but they really are due for a win. It could be a trap game for TCU.

  11. Sorry, my bad–

    Georgia
    Ohio St
    LSU
    USC

And with LSU probably losing to Georgia SC could have moved to No .3 and avoided Georgia (but still get Ohio St)

  12. The NCAA and the future of college football dodged a bullet in the
USC Matt Gee lawsuit against the NCAA for the brain trauma or CTE
Mr. Gee suffered allegedly at the hands of too many football blows to the head.

Matt’s widow could not establish causation due to too many years separating when Matt quit football and when he died, but apparently there are hundreds of similar cases waiting in the wings to try to bring football down

      1. Matt’s substance abuse trouble was another piece of the defensive puzzle making it nearly impossible for the plaintiff Gee to prevail, but the scary thing is that other cases are much stronger than Matt Gee’s, so what does college football do if the CTE lawsuits start to compile tens of millions in damages against the colleges?–

Either way Pro football will in all probability continue on with its mantra being ‘players assume the risk,’ but the colleges might not fare as well

    1. Agreed. This is the same formula when PC took over. Orange Bowl victory over Iowa in 2002 led to #1 recruiting classes and national championships the following years.

      1. LR is in someways ahead of Pete Carroll. PC was just 6-6 his first year and he lost to Utah(before Utah ever got into a power 5 conference) 10-6 in the bowl game. LR is an offensive genius. If he ever gets over his previous mode of trying to outscore opponents(like Chip Kelly) and decides to really build a great defense, SC could come into a era that is above even the Pete Carroll era.

  14. Maybe so, but even great teams like SC, Alabama, Clemson and Ohio St have had difficulty getting to a National Championship game such as the disappointment of Trojans’ teams in 1969, 1976, 1979, 2002, 2006

So carpe diem 2022 Trojan team, with football it is the present that counts not the future, and you guys have a real chance at that Title

  15. I sure hope the team is getting deadly serious about ND as we sit here and squawk about the temporary CFP poll. It will change again next week and then again the week after. ND represents an imminent danger to the success of the USC football season, and that defense of USC better get very very serious about shutting down the ND ground game. Otherwise it is not going to matter what the other teams do.

    1. I believe sucla made a mistake in getting away from its ground game
but the Irish will not make the same mistake–

Same ol” ND formula– run the ball down the enemy’s throat,
hurry the opposing quarterback and win the turnover-battle

      Liked by 2 people

      1. John — There was a reason UCLA got away from it’s ground game…it was mainly only average against Grinch’s defense….. DTR was doing it pretty much on his own at the end —Notre Dame is welcome to try that with their QB but, you’re right, it’s their running backs we’re gonna have to worry about….

    2. I’m pretty confident about this game. Hopefully it’s not a false confidence. LR is a proven winner and a very experienced HC. I find it hard to believe that he will let a rookie HC like Freeman knock him out of the playoff race.

  16. The teams that beat Notre Dame (Stanford, Marshall, Ohio St) had better red zone outcomes than the Irish. The only team that had a comparable offense to the Trojans were Ohio St. If it’s a battle of turnovers and Notre Dame is worse than USC then consider it a Trojan victory. If not, then USC must win the red zone outcomes. If that’s the case then USC must run the ball to at least 95 yards+ to stay on schedule. To beat the Irish then USC must come up with negative plays on defense to reach an achievable outcome.

Especially if Notre Dame is forced to throw to their wideouts. But will the tight ends get neutralized? Gentry, Shaw, Max Williams and Tuli Tuipulotu have never played in a game this season yet.

    Can’t wait to see.

    1. If what was meant to be written is that those named SC players
“have never played together in a game this season yet,” then I’m afraid the trend will continue because I can’t believe SC will play a still gimpy Gentry which really hurts

And to MG’s point sucla was not having the expected success with its running attack but no matter because DTR had the hot hand, and this ND QB is no DTR when it comes to running but he is a capable passer who turned the Irish season around with his game management skills, and having won the last 4-games means a lot of the current ND players
have tasted victory whereas no current Trojan has yet won one
but this is the One to win
