USC Morning Buzz: Decisions Loom For Lincoln Riley

Lincoln Riley has a tough decision ahead.

He can fire Alex Grinch. Or he can tell Grinch to fire some defensive assistant coaches.

Either way, some type of change seems likely for the USC coaching staff. Firing some assistants won’t be easy for Riley since it would probably mean some guys who followed him from Oklahoma get sacked.

But it’s going to be hard to justify going into Caleb Williams’ final year without some serious changes on defense. It’s also going to be out of character for Riley to make drastic coaching changes.

  • A few other thoughts:

Why was Mario Williams returning that kickoff? He had returned only two kickoffs all season.

  • There was way too much credit given to the offensive line during the game while Tulane rushed three linemen. You saw what happened when Tulane rushed four on the pivotal safety.
  • From ESPN: “Over the past five seasons, teams had been 1-1,692 when trailing by 15 or more points with five minutes or less remaining in the fourth quarter, according to ESPN Stats & Information research.”
  • Tulane averaged 10.8 yards per play. USC had the ball for nearly 40 minutes (39:49) and Tulane for only 20 minutes, 11 seconds.

    1. Great article —cuz it brings up the possibility of Caleb’s representatives suggesting he leave if Riley keeps Grinch. Grinch is a politician who keeps promising results that are NEVER forthcoming.
While we’re on the subject of NEVER —Raleek will NEVER return a kick for a TD cuz he doesn’t look for the seam the way Adoree and Reggie did. Mario Williams should NEVER be asked to return kicks cuz it involves making decisions —and Mario always looks lost on the field or in interviews. Plain lost.
As for the safety —it should never have happened. At that late stage of the game [with Haskins, Vorhees and Neilon out] the best bet would be Caleb heaving the ball from the endline of the endzone 40 or 50 yards down field —not to a USC receiver— no one from our team would be out there —but to force Tulane to take over at the 30 [presumably we could tackle the Tulane safety who caught the ball]. Would Tulane quickly score after that? Sure. But WE’D get the ball back [presumably we could cover their onside kick]. Instead WE gave them the safety they needed AND kicked to them….AND gave them the TD they needed to win the game.
We really had to fuck up royally to lose.
      But we found a way.
Let’s not fuck up royally again by keeping Grinch or his staff. Give Caleb a fucking chance next year —-or he really should think about going elsewhere. Why kill yourself in rehab and on the field just to watch a clown show [that the whole country is laughing at]?
Good luck getting ANY 5 stars to play for Grinch. No one is coming as long as he’s around.

    2. It makes no difference who the defensive coordinator is under Lincoln Riley, because his fast pace offense doesn’t give the defense a chance to rest. His Oklahoma Sooners teams gave up 35-40 points a game, and it won’t be any different at USC. Everyone knew what they were getting in Riley, it’s called Big 12 football, where nobody plays defense. 😂😂. So stop the crying Ass Lick Fanboys, and prepare for Big Ten Football to have the ball run down your throats

      1. The USC offense was on the field for twice the amount of time of the defense. Did you want the defense to be able to take a vacation?

Riley/Grinch simply need to be willing to play the guy with the highest upside. They have a bunch of senior players who have very low ceilings of talent, both physically and mentally.

      2. TCU’s defense (a Big 12 team) made the Big 10 champ look pretty bad. Maybe defense is sometimes played by some Big 12 teams some of the time. But I agree that with L.R. you get all gas and no brakes.

    3. I understand the overreaction in this blog because the loss was such an incredulous, dubious incogitable debacle of a game. Still, from a legal point of view, it is hard to justify the termination of the defensive coordinator when the loss was a direct cause of the play of the special team and the offense. The decision of having a WR field a kickoff and the subsequent missed play of the ball at the 1-yard line was pivotal to the loss. Also, the play call on offense on the 1-yard line leads directly to the safety. The order of people responsible is the Special team’s coach, the play-calling coach, and then perhaps the DC. All in all the HC who is the one that is in charge of everything is the one that is the most culpable. But from a financial point of view, how do you justify the firing of Lincoln Riley, especially on the heels of the unjust firing of Clay Helton?

I recommend keeping the staff as is and hope for the best.

I also believe this is on Bohn. Bohn must tell Riley to fix it and fix it soon. I don’t know if Bohn has the technical skill to evaluate a d cordinator, but he does have the right to fire and hire. This is a time that he has to wear his big boy pants and get it fixed. Or this Riley experiment will be over by next year.

Riley has Caleb for one more year …AND…. he has the power to make the changes he needs to bolster the defense. If he wastes the opportunity he’ll be seen as a flawed coach for the rest of his career,

      3. Gabby —I totally agree. If Riley takes more than a couple more days axing Grinch he’s over-thinking it. There are at least 2 dozen people in the country who can build a stronger, more committed defensive unit — get rid of Grinch first and, then, go get one of them. Not vice versa. Reason? Riley needs to let 5 star defensive players know he cares. He needs to make it emphatic. He needs to make a statement. Now.

      4. Here’s another thing….A new D coordinator might have a quality player or two follow him to USC.

Example….When my oldest daughter was playing competitive club soccer, we picked the coach that would give her the development needed to reach the D1 level. He changed teams during her high school years but we followed him. The wins and losses were secondary. His soccer IQ and training made all the difference.

I did play football for a high school that has kicked most programs around for four years. My sophmore year we had the same problem as Helton, and he was there for one year. he got fired after one year. The high school Loyola, was committed to winning so they brought in the coaching staff from St. Bernards. My junior year we were 4-6 missing a 6-3 season by 10 points. My senior year, we went undefeated. The year after that they were National Champions. So shut your trap knowing that you are not the real Damien Mama.

Mario Williams in on Punt Return and What the is he TRYING to Fair Catch at 1 yard line Only to Drop the Ff in Football out bounds… Making USC start at the 1 Yard line. Turning in to a SAFETY.. IF Only Had Mario Williams had Let the. Ff in Football Go Out of Bounds.. USC would have Started at the 35 Yard Line…

  2. 10.8 yards per play????What is really being done to stop the offense? Our defense has given up an average of 500 yards/game in the last 4 games. For 4 weeks we have been talking about nothing more than “tackle, tackle, tackle” and what do we do when we get on the field in the Cotton Bowl????We miss more tackles.

    1. And it wasn’t easy. We had to have Mario go to sleep on the field [again] AND we had to give up a safety which could have been avoided with a quick kick from the endline of the endzone or a pre-planned pass to a Tulane safety who we could gang tackle at the 25 or 30. Tulane, OF COURSE, would score fast….. AND WE WOULD GET THE BALL BACK INSTEAD OF KICKING TO THEM SO THEY COULD EAT UP THE REST OF THE CLOCK AND SCORE.

He can gain it back but some change has to happen and he needs to accept that he made major mistakes, not just in the Cotton bowl, but at various times during the season. His biggest mistake was not giving Grinch the ultimatum, tackle or get fired.

TCU and USC started off with the same foundation before the season started, bad teams with significant lack of talent. TCU became more physical

  8. If this debacle isn’t the impetus for a total housecleaning on the defensive side of the ball then nothing will. I realize that USC is thin talent wise, but the fact of the matter is that the defense never improved during the season, and this goes back to coaching. The only item I will give Grinch somewhat of a pass on is that some of the defensive players do not have great football instincts, which is the number one reason why they don’t make plays.

I remain skeptical of the OUsc direction for the program, but will maintain an open mind…at least this (admittedly too close to the scene – and time – of the crime) doesn’t have LR flinch reacting in defense of the (non D)DC…LR’s entire future will be decided in next couple of weeks (whether he is willing and allowed to replace with top shelf DC). Of course in this he also purportedly said “see you in twelve months”…he must not know braggadocio posturing where OUsc in Dallas is concerned is probably not wise. But would love to see him shut all of us up then…only one way to do that, and it starts with fixing what is broken.

  11. Well now I know for sure Lincoln Riley is never going into real estate. He gives too much of it away. Among the numerous mistakes made of the field yesterday the Refs had their share (not an excuse just an annoyance) For instance what does a Trojan receiver have to do to draw a flag for interference? Since when did the announcer for TV become a replay judge? Twice they went on and on about rules, which they incorrectly interpreted, and the Refs seemed to listen. And finally missing a face mask and late hit penalties but enforcing a glancing block and holding was just bad work by the referee.
So, now I get to the photographer who took a closeup picture of a player’s helmet. He probably works for Hal Roach studios and was there to film the slapstick tackling USC employs. At one point four would be tacklers swatted at the Green Wave running back (their only weapon) all four failed to slow the runner, while looking like a frat house paddle line. Scott could write a post about how the Grinch stole Victory. On second thought maybe I’ll do it, for fun.

  12. I just think the fire Alex Grinch bandwagon is filled with fans who dont have a clue. USC had a really great turnaround season this year. This is year one and the program is light years ahead of the past.

Grinch had huge problems in the roster – the linebacker group is probably the worst talent level in the country. Going forward, that linebacker group will have some really talented players by next year. The D-line is a huge problem because they have not recruited well. That needs to be fixed, fast.

With Domani Jackson, that arizona transfer as CB, Zion Branch and Calen Bullock the secondary could be very good.

Some of the players with seniority on this team – Figueroa, Shane Lee, Max Williams – are the players that are the core of the problem. They simply dont make plays, again and again. They need to overhaul this roster and get the younger players on the field, who can develop during the year, along with talented transfers. (I believe the reason the USC defense didnt improve one bit during the year is that some of those senior players have a very low ceiling of improvement and did not get better with experience).

The biggest problem I see with the whole program is the poor recruiting in the trenches. Most of the issue is a lack of a proper NIL program that pays money to the non-glamor positions. Caleb Williams and the skill players can get NIL deals based on name recognition, we need an outside collective focused on paying the big uglies. Until that happens, there will be little to no improvement in the trenches. This is a Bohn-head issue.

I wouldnt be opposed to firing Grinch, but it is highly unlikely to happen. Give him a second year with some decent linebacker talent and we will see if he can turn things around. Tell him that a simply good defense is not enough, we need elite.

    1. Same excuses with the players. His defense was ranked 103 out of 130 teams prior to this game. Likely worse now. Yeah right that 102 teams had better players than SC. Also, explain why he sucked at OU with talent?!?

No positive growth in the defense this alarming. You only have a QB like Williams once in a decade and you will not have Riley forever. Strike while the iron is hot not later. Grinch needs to go.

  13. My guess is Riley’s explanation for running the ball at his own goal line will be he was afraid of a holding call in end zone which would produce a safety. Still, having the back lineup in the back of the end zone to receive ball was comical.

  14. Much as this loss hurts, maybe it was necessary so Riley can rip off bandaid now and not wait until after next season to make changes?
And if he doesn’t make changes after this terrible loss…oh boy.

  15. One more point. The person who actually lost that game was head coach Lincoln Riley. In the fourth quarter he took the ball out of the hands of his playmaker – CW – on two key drives. He tried to run the ball on first and second down, despite the fact that the running game was getting stopped cold. He tried to run the ball out of the endzone with a weak offensive line. And he put Superman on ice. Dont ever do that.

Also, he has no special team coach and someone made the insane decision to have Mario Williams receive the kickoff. Williams is not the surest of hands in high pressure moments.

Grinch is taking the heat for a systemic problem with Riley that needs to be fixed – his willingness to allow deficiencies across the whole team that are masked by the incredible talent of his quarterbacks and receivers.

Riley needs a new team culture I am going to call “without Superman”. The point is that every part of the team and staff should be responsible for creating an elite team that can win, without Superman. So no more relying on CW to pull out a magical win and save their butts. Because if they create an elite team with CW as QB, they will be unstoppable. But every part of the team needs to be accountable. Pulling out a win in the last seconds is not enough. Domination in every facet of the game is required.

  16. It’s obvious that Riley panicked and overthought the issue after failure on the first play near the goal line on the penultimate series of downs. Haskins was out and Murphy was in. Max protect was in order or a rollout would have worked. That said, giving up scores in the second half on two play drives is inexcusable. Nomura looked lost in space and having so many defenders react so slow to zone coverage shows lack of coaching on the defensive side. But how many balls were batted down? Why couldn’t USC blitz? After all these games, defenders were still confused on the rules of engagement?

    A well earned loss indeed.

  17. The obvious thing Grinch supporters are missing is that there was no positive growth in the defense. The numbers show that the defense was getting worse since October. Grinch had all his players on the defensive side back from injuries and had a month to prepare!

The only conclusion is that Grinch is being outcoached by the opponents offensive coaches.

    Liked by 2 people

      1. I am not a Grinch supporter, but I also dont think this season proves he is a bad DC. The core problem is that the roster at USC was literally decimated by Helton and the defensive side didnt pick up enough quality transfers. There are a ton of players on the defensive side who are either being forced into a position that doesnt fit them, or they have very limited upside physical and cognitive skills. You simply cant teach some players to do anything at an elite level.

Maybe in the context of the Oklahoma defenses, it is fair to say Grinch is not a good DC. I dont know the Oklahoma history well enough to comment intelligently.

      2. You are right. The other issue is the quality of players filling the defensive positions. Arguably, we might have had the worst starting inside linebackers in the PAC12. After watching yesterday’s game, I am even more convinced.

When you give up 300 plus on the ground, there should be major finger-pointing. Davis came in and looked the part, then they put him back on the sideline……fuck this loyalty issue……play the best players. I really think Lee should transfer out, with the kid from Ok. St coming in…..

For the 1245 time, I don’t give a fuck about others’ remarks when it comes to my comments related to you. You’re a joke who brings no value to the blog and has no perception of what takes place on a football field. But somehow tries to fit in by posting lame-ass political comments that no one ever replies to…..yet for some reason I am the problem….dude, you truly are fucking senile and lack the reasoning skills to understand the big picture.

I have zero issues with everyone on this blog except for your whining and crying about Biden and your political gaslighting…..eat shit!

You’re fucking lucky to be a keyboard tough guy because if I had the chance, you would get a good ass whipping….stop responding to me ….you fucking dunce

I don’t believe your stalker personality can pull it off, but I’m sure many here will appreciate it!

Quit lying. A) I don’t post about it every day and B) I’m not crying, I’m laughing at this administration and anyone who voted for it.

Hey, I tried. You proved again that you are incapable of acting like an adult.

Your lack of discretionary income is a “you” problem…..stop finger-pointing.

Prove to yourself you know something about football, or get the fuck out of here….you fucking argue because you have nothing better going on in your wife…the shar pei is all dried out, the dick is limp…..and the cost of a diaper is cutting into your wine budget….haha!!!

Normally, I’d have said nothing about that. I’m very blessed to be in the position I am, financially. But if someone totally asks to be smacked down, it’s gonna happen.

      11. “Gabby”, he never see the hypocrisy in his remarks. Great example:

“You should show some respect to people who have asked you not to post political comments” (all one or two of them, LOL) or even more ludicrous “No one replies to your post”.

Uhm, Gabby….it’s funny how at least a half dozen people have called you out for being a complete fool.

Reply: “I don’t give a shit what people think!”

  19. Scooter and to the rest,

This game hurt us all and it even hurt Scooter. We will dish our anger out here on the board, but in the next few days, SC, Riley, and us will have to move ahead. Big decisions will have to be made or not made. Grinch will have a lot of explaining to do to keep his job. Bohn will have the final decision. All we can do is hope and pray that the right decision(s) are made or you will see next season worse than this one. Then SC will have a major problem on their hands and that is, can Riley win at an elite level. I hope for the best for the coaches and the program.

    1. I know some want to give Grinch another chance next year and want to claim it would be a knee-jerk reaction to fire him.

But when you think about us having made that a “2” in the 1-1,692 statistic, that should be enough to make them all realize this is no normal situation.

  20. This is not a knee jerk reaction. It was a bad idea bringing him in the first place. He was horrible at OU for three years. That was his resume and Riley still brought him over. OU fans knew and were laughing at the decision. If SC can bring in an elite defensive guy then do it now.

    1. Point of Information: Grinch was not Riley’s first choice —he was his stop gap. I can’t remember the other coach’s name but right after Riley became head coach he offered the DC position to this guy ….& was turned down by him ….and then—and only then [cuz he felt under the gun to get SOMEBODY] — did Lincoln take Grinch.

  21. SOONER NATION is applauding USC for taking Riley & staff! Did Coach Riley win at Oklahoma yes he did but it was thru his offense by outscoring the other side by 1 point. The Sooners defense could not stop there opponent. USC fans should have seen this train coming during regular season. Just look at all the close games that USC played in even if they won. The only thing Tulane did was watch the tapes from how Utah beat USC. If Riley keeps Grinch, it will be a wash, rinse and repeat 2023.

  22. USC fans and alumni only need to look at one man to blame, and that’s Lincoln Riley.
It was “Dejavue” all over again and Riley saw his defense give up big numbers in big games as he did at Oklahoma. Nope, the buck stops at Riley’s door.

    1. The buck stops at Riley’s door is purely academic. The issue at hand, what’s the solution to fix the problem(s) Riley is dealing with(or avoiding), or is the ball in Bohn’s hands?

It’s easy to speculate at this point in time. The broad consensus is a change of some form, that must place sooner than later.

  23. #4 single handly tanked the game,
    1) blown coverage to set up the winning TD
    2)missed tackle to allow TD
    3)fumbled the kickoff
    4) dropped pass on final drive
Probably placed a BET on game
