USC Notes: Cotton Bowl Impacts Analyst’s Rankings

We haven’t even had the final AP poll yet but Brett McMurphy of Action Network has already done an early Top 25 for next season and has USC ranked 15th.

Maybe worse, he has USC ranked behind Oregon State (No. 13).

Did the Cotton Bowl sour McMurphy on USC that much? The Trojans return Caleb Williams and are trying to beef up the defense via the transfer portal.

McMurphy also has Washington No. 8 and Oregon No. 10. UCLA is No. 24. So he thinks USC is the fourth-best team in the Pac-12. Yes, the Cotton Bowl really did impact him. Let’s see what the AP poll says when it comes out Monday night.

  • Former USC wide receiever CJ Williams, who entered the transfer portal this week, has already visited Wisconsin and will visit West Virginia.

      2. I’d just like to hear LR say something…..whatever your future plans are, what’s the reasoning behind them? Are we expecting Alex Grinch to suddenly become Buddy Ryan between now and spring practice? He’s never really shown himself to be a great DC up until now…..why would things change in 2023? They keep saying that he needs more talent…..yes, if you want to go from 50th to 15th nationally defensively. But we had far more talent last year then we needed to finish 106th in the nation. Like I said before, our defense had two 5 stars and sixteen 4 stars. Tulanes defense had zero 5 stars and one 4 stars and they finished in the low 30’s in defense.

      7. He’s really good. No two ways about it. Not exactly a Chip Kelly type QB because he is nowheres as near mobile as say Caleb or DTR.

      9. Dante Moore is really accurate, has a great arm and a quick release but I don’t think that he is that mobile……..but, of course, that description could describe Tom Brady.

    Sorry, 9-3 is my best prognostication….8-4 is also a fair possibility.

    BTW, Young Mr. Moore, UCLA’s 5 star QB recruit threw 4 TD passes to help the East defeat the West in the Under Armor AA Bowl. Moore was also elected the MVP of the game. Finally, UCLA got a really good QB with quality game skills.

    I hate to admit it but for one of the few times in your life, you have stumbled onto the truth. I agree. If I was a 4 or 5 star D-Lineman or a highly rated portal D-Lineman, I wouldn’t go to SC. For what?…..to have all the fans and pundants complain that you are letting the team down. I can see going to class each day and having classmates ask me “what in the world is wrong with you defensive players…..you couldn’t stop a really great high school team”?

      1. Tackling would definitely help. But you have to have some kind of defensive scheme to put players in the best position on each play to make those tackles.

      1. That would work for Az. C. Williams doesn’t need LR to complete passes. And as I’ve said before, CW could skip 2023 and just train for the 2024 NFL draft. Why risk a very average year, or injury and ruin a secure top 3 (#1 QB) NFL selection befitting a H/T winner.

        Surely Williams must be familiar with Matt Leinart’s Sq. Dance blunder and his NC defeat at the hands of Tixas, and what it cost Leinart in his draft selection….a lock 1st rd. choice down to I believe, the #10 or slightly lower NFL choice. Mucho $$$$$$$ separate #1 vs #10 or lower.

  9. They had better decide what changes that they are going to make with this defense because next years schedule is much harder than this years. If they went 11-3 this year, they will go 9-5 next year without some serious changes.
    If they replace some position coaches, bring in some people who can both coach and recruit. Of the 25 top recruiters in the country, SC has one(Donte Williams). Texas A&M has 5. True…a lot of these recruiters are having their job made easier by the money that the school is offering but I’m not convinced that this staff has great recruiters.

        I can’t imagine why Joe lied about not knowing any of Hunter’s business associates, even though there are several pictures that prove otherwise. And there’s certainly nothing at all shady about Joe & Jim expecting to get their 10%.

        Not to mention Hunter selling paintings at prices comparable to Picassos. I mean, what else could the purchasers be paying for, other than the incredible artwork itself?

        Last but not least, there’s nothing at all suspicious about Joe leaving that voicemail to Hunter, “I think you’re clear”. I wonder what he could have reviewed or considered to give that assessment, since he knows nothing about Hunter’s business dealings.
