What A (Lousy) Super Bowl Ending!

This was a great Super Bowl.

Until the end. The refs, of course.

You don’t make that holding call unless everyone thinks it’s a holding call. And many people, including Fox analyst Greg Olsen, didn’t like it. Mike Pereira liked it. But he hired head referee Carl Cheffers to be a pro football referee (Cheffers used to be a Pac-10 official). So he had a rooting interest.

When you have a classic game, you don’t make that call if it will be controversial.

      2. Owns — At the very least the interference call was iffy. I wonder why there are so many iffy calls squeezed into the last 2 minutes of close or tie NFL games where so much money is on the line….

      3. In all fairness, I hate the outcome of a game that comes down to a judgment call by an official. 10 people could watch that last holding call with 5 in agreement and 5 calling BS.

  3. Also, don’t rush Reggie Bush up the middle when you have LenDale White. Do not play the Ting brothers in a National Championship Game. Also don’t throw it from the 1 yard line when you have Marshawn Lynch. Also, never hire drunk Pat Haden for anything.

      There was a no call against JuJu earlier that was definitely a hold.

      I picked KC and won my bet.

      Great game and Jalen Hurts will a Super Bowl in the future, maybe even next year.

    “It was a holding,” he said following the Eagles’ 38-35 loss. “I tugged his jersey. I was hoping they would let it slide.”
    With the game tied 35-35 with 1:54 remaining, the Chiefs faced a third-and-8 from the Philly 15. Kansas City quarterback Patrick Mahomes lobbed a pass to Smith-Schuster that wasn’t close. However, a flag flew in, giving K.C. an automatic first down, allowing them to drain the clock to 11 seconds before kicking the game-winning field for the win.

    2. Without the flag the end result could have been the same. Eagles would have had a very tough shot at tying the game. But the call was made, end of game, so sad, to bad.

  12. Honestly Scott, “you don’t make that call if it’s going to be controversial.” It’s going to be controversial either way. No one is saying it wasn’t holding. Some people are saying they should let it slide. Either way, it was a correct call. The Eagles had a second half meltdown and that is what decided the game.

    Hurts lands a solid punch 7-0
    Mahomes counters with fight 7-7
    Hurts again 14-7
    Hurts stumbles takes a big blow 14-14
    Hurts still again 21-14
    Hurts gets in a little punch 24-14
    Here comes Mahomes looking sharp 24-21
    Hurts sneaks in a small hit 27-21
    No stopping Mahomes as his punches grab the lead 28-27
    Mahomes again, cannot stop him 35-27
    Oh My, Hurts is not going down, 35-33
    Hurts again 35-35
    But Mahomes saves the day with a final striking 38-35

  16. Many media whining about the defensive holding call against Bradberry on JuJu. To his credit, Bradberry stated after the game that he did hold (though he had hoped the officials would let it go). Also great comments from Sirianni that it’s never just one call. And Sirianni tearing up during the National Anthem … good on him.

  17. JuJu six catches in the 2nd Half after Eagles clamped down on Travis Kelce. Mahomes 12/13 in the 2nd Half and rode JuJu. JuJu will get a nice new contract in 2023.

  18. Yeah, Bradberry said he had grabbed Juju, but would I have called it? No. Earlier Juju was pretty animated about not getting a call, so maybe it evened up. I still consider it a poor call because it was as Chick Hearn would say, “Ticky-Tack.” And calling a Ticky-Tack foul that essentially ended the game was disappointing to many fans.
    We’ve all seen more significant grabs by DB’s tens of thousands of times that were not called.
    As Chick Hearn also used to say, “Call it how you call it, but call it the same at both ends of the court.”

    1. He had 10 carries for 45 yards against the Raiders in week 18, then only one carry through the playoffs. He had asked for a release from the Chiefs back in November due to a lack of playing time. The only silver lining is a Super Bowl ring.

  20. Yeah the KC-guy was grabbed (relatively little), a call that CAN be made although usually not, with the underlying rationale being
    “Notwithstanding the ‘hold’ was the ball even catchable,” and so it deprived us of a last-minute comeback try by Hurts with almost
    2-minutes to go, and the way the offenses were humming, who knows?–Well, Philly wants to ‘knows,’ they are as mad as Heck and they are “not going to take this anymore,” sigh sigh, such is life-

    Actually the man-made ‘Rules Misinterpretations” put out by the NFL
    cast a sad pall on an incredible game, although I did not see it but listened to a great announcer, Keith, and a nuanced color man, I mean
    come on let me count the ways:
    FIRST HALF–
    Philly and Hurts come out gunning, sweeping the field easily 7-0
    KC’s Mahomes shows he is no push-over mowing down Eagles 7-7
    Hey Chiefs, say hello to the Real Chief Mr. Hurts to you 14-7
    Oh yeah, brash guy, tell me if that ‘hurts’ 14-14
    Yeah, it hurt a little but I have resolve right now 21-14
    And just a little left in the tank 24-14

    HALFTIME THOUGHTS-
    Philadelphia– We don’t have this quite yet but I am feeling good about our chances
    Kansas City– We didn’t play our best that first half, they only think they are a running juggernaut they got me a couple of time there, but I got them figured out now, but that guy Hurts is the real deal, I am a little surprised, but I have the checkmate piece Patrick

    SECOND HALF:
    Mahomes to the rescue, looking sharp, Philly watch out 24-21
    Darn it all, that field goal won’t do 27-21
    I am not through for the day Eagles, chew on this 27-28
    And this mates, 27-35
    Alright Patrick you are the best, but I am pretty good too 33-35
    And for good measure tie that one on 35-35
    One last run I got in me and that is it 35-38

  21. Any intelligent fan would say that it was a horrible call, unwarranted, gave the game away to KC with plenty of time for Philly to engineer a game winning touchdown.
    Anyone who sees it different if just full of hogwash.
