What Does Stanford Decision Mean For USC?

Stanford announced it would cut 11 sports — including men’s volleyball — at the end of the 2020-21 season because of financial shortcomings due to the pandemic.

The other sports cut are men’s and women’s fencing, field hockey, lightweight rowing, men’s rowing, co-ed and women’s sailing, squash, synchronized swimming, men’s volleyball and wrestling. Stanford said that it faced a $25 million deficit before the cuts.

So how does it relate to USC?

Stanford has more sports but it also has a $28 billion endowment and is one of the richest schools in the country. USC’s endowment is about $6 billion.

Maybe Stanford faced a bigger deficit because it has more sports but USC’s likely looking at a serious deficit too if football is shortened or played with less fans or no fans.

USC has said it is not considering dropping sports but private schools are in a tough position right now as they try to convince students to go to mostly online classes at full tuition prices.

The bottom line is if Stanford is cutting sports, it’s a bad sign for all private universities.

  1. The news that Stanford’s cut men and women’s fencing from their budget impacts more than USC…

    2. USC needs to cut water polo, swimming, diving, field hockey, lacrosse and rowing from the sports program! Those sports are being funded on backs of black athletes. Those sports figuratively say “NO BLACKS ALLOWED” Y’all know that black people don’t play any of them water sports because black people don’t got access to swimming pools! Also every black person knows not to run around with a stick in there hands… It’s a sure fire way of getting shot by white people! Stop modern day slavery! Blacks don’t need to be subsidizing sports that excludes black people…. Y’all can keep beach volley ball because we like the “scenery”

    2. I hope everybody’s paying attention to all the news I’m breaking, I’ve been scooping Scott Wolf all day. I’m the real USC insider, not Wolf. It infuriates me when he gets all the credit, because I know nobody will follow me if I start my own blog 😡😡

I’m looking for plenty of likes on my narratives, and he’s just providing accurate information on a horribly run athletic department.

    2. An athletic department deficit of $25 million when viewed through the lens of a $28 billion endowment is a rounding error. It’s not quite a rounding error at SC, but it’s close.

That said, there are probably laws regarding the fiduciary duty of members of the BOT and administration when it comes to spending endowment funds. If there weren’t, there would probably be some very public turf battles waged in the media over which faction on campus gets their priorities funded.

  2. I can’t help but ask why would Stanford affect USC? And is the Cardinal dropping sports which will be picked back up after this pandemic is “over” or are these useless sports?
I have been to Stanford twice and hated the the time on both trips. The Students were not very interested in the game, just hurling insults at the visitors.
Hopefully USC will not become the Stanford of the slightly less west than Stanford.

    1. What is a “useless sport” ?

If any of them are useless, then they all are. Or maybe only those that do not generate positive revenue?

So swimming, which John Naber and Mike Neyholt and countless other notables participated in is useless?

Baseball, with Fred Lynn, Randy Johnson and Mark McGuire, useless?

Every sport has positive benefits for both participants and non-participants.

  4. In this time of vast uncertainty, it is good to know that the Trojan Family can gather and support the losing football program. It has been a pillar of stability with no major changes taking place regardless of administration shuffling including a new president without previous ties to USC. Congratulations to the ever so steady 5-7 team. Thank you president folt, ad bohn, and hc helton. Fight on!

    1. Stanford is the place to go. Like Harvard, Yale and Princeton, the hard part is getting in but if you can manage that(maybe with a little help from rich parents) you almost can’t fail to graduate. With the practice of grade inflation, it’s harder to get a “C” than it is to get an “A”. And anything less than a “C” is unheard of.

  7. Endowment size means nothing regarding operating budget. Endowments are specific and can’t be redirected to paying salaries or keeping the lights on. If you look at USC sports, the only obscure ones are women’s sports, and they are protected by title IV. They would need to also drop men’s sports, and all are pretty main sports. Baseball, basketball, football, track & field, swim & dive, tennis, golf, and volleyball.
