Discuss The USC-Utah Debacle

USC is officially a joke.

It has been blown out of three home games and pushed around physically.

Let’s put this on Mike Bohn.

He has been at USC for 2 years. He has been a blowhard about all the support staff he hired and done nothing to change the program in a meaningful way.

And here we are now at 3-3 vs. a dreadful schedule.

Bohn should apologize for where he has led the program. And Todd Orlando and Graham Harrell are awful too.

    1. Years of Clay Helton coddling players, soft practices, lack of discipline, hiring crap assistants and failure to understand the importance of a strong offensive line has led to the shit show you are now witnessing today when watching Trojan football.

      Shameful and embarrassing!

  1. The average fan they show in the stands looks much more unhappy than the average player on the sideline. Something is very wrong with that.

The whole football organization stinks from the head down, and I don’t know what one can do other than clean house and start all over. Total redo, and that would include Bohn. Forget the bar video and go get Urban.

    1. Did anyone expect that USC would be able to immediately turn around a program that was destroyed by Clay Helton and Graham Harrell from the inside? Graham Harrell’s offense is a joke. He should be fired immediately. The defense cant possibly be trained to defend against teams running a complete offensive attack.

      1. The defense cannot prepare for REAL football when they practice against the gimmick air raid. It’s why they always look unprepared in games. Harrell is a helton clone. All talk, no walk.

      1. We all pretty much know what a screw up Harrel as an O.C. But putting him in the same category as BruinRob, who has been the Assistant to the Manager at the Cerritos McDonald’s for the past 15 years is a bit harsh.

  2. It’s not quite a category mistake because it’s kind of an esoteric concept but the mistake people are making here is referring to this group of people as a team. It’s not a team. It’s a collection of individuals who’s priority is their advancement. There’s no one for all all for one. It’s all about building their individual brand. That’s USC’s identity, has been since Carroll started the Hollywood circle jerk. It’s like, there was a quote this week how a receiver was so happy that he was at USC because he could run into billionaires every day just being out and about. It’s not a team, it’s a production. Just like the hype videos and the stupid basketball DJ. Anyhow, thanks for attending my TED talk.

  6. Congratulation carol & mike!!! Helton’s two further years of ineptitude with your aiding & abetting has done more damage to USC than the NCAA sanctions. Now if we don’t get a REAL BIG NAME COACH soon, we will continue to spiral downward as getting recruits, even with the remarkable skill of Donte, will increase in difficulty because USC will be a loser. We need
tthe hope of a promising future. Only a major change like a great coach will spark that hope.

BTW-Even though he showed a little more heart than I thought, Fury thoroughly dominated Wilder…he had him figured out by the end of their first fight…classic boxing axiom: bullies hate being bullied…Fury is an oddity, but one hell of a combination of smarts, sneaky quickness and power and enough awkwardness to make him miserable to deal with for opponents, given that big frame.

      2. MG – Your dead on (and I know you know your boxing)…same sort of deskilling has occurred in the heavyweight division that plagues other sports (the big power punching is the equivalent of home run derby feast or famine in baseball and how football has devolved into a throw it up for grabs version of the old single wing – Roger Staubach missed his era – he would get paid a $billion a year in today’s game)…but Fury actually defies that is some ways…for a big non-athletic looking fighter, he’s surprisingly quick, good at slipping punches, smart in making tactical changes, and it’s his jab that sets up all of the long-armed bombs…he doesn’t remind me of any heavyweights, except a little of maybe V. Klitschko…but he has a lot of elements of smaller fighters…

        Liked by 1 person

      3. Astute observations –on sport in general and boxing, in particular. Fury is not what you’d call poetry in motion but he’s a natural fighter –meaning he knows how to get to you. And he has killer instinct. He’s the bigger, more dangerous version of Chuck Wepner (we know what Ali did to Wepner….I wonder if he could do it to a 280 pound version of Wepner…)…

      4. Fury reminds me of lower weight division fighters more so – I see a lot of Marvin Hagler in him (although obviously not the ripped specimen type of athlete)…combined with the effective awkwardness of Klitschko V. … yeah, the closest to a 280 lb Ali would be Lennox (wow, how good could he have been if with a different trainer early on rather than later)…but even he showed how science is a part of the science…at a certain point, limb length and need to move additional mass against gravity results in diminishing quickness and stamina…even if the fighter has great quick twitch muscle fiber percentage.

        Liked by 1 person

      5. Lennox was the real deal –speed, intelligence, the whole arsenal of punches —but a questionable chin.

      6. Lennox had it all … just harnessed it later than should have been the case (if Manny had been his trainer from day one, might have been the best – skills of Larry Holmes, body of a bigger Ken Norton, fists and wrists as big as Chicken George…and smarts…of course, that latter was what held him back, as I’m sure you’ll recall Manny’s humorous but prosaic comment (I paraphrase): “I wish he would quit playing that fucking chess!”). Fun interview…and unlike other fighters, almost without exception, you didn’t want him in a rematch – he always learned and got better. The fight with Klitschko was one of the best, if awkward…

  12. SC is now 3-3. In 2 weeks they will be 3-4. They are not going to beat ND in South Bend. If I had to guess, I would think that they will end up 5-7 this year. But it’s too early to tell because we don’t know what will happen when Jackson Dart comes back and takes over……and he will. Slovis hasn’t played that badly but much of his production has been against weak teams or against better teams when we were way behind and they were playing a lot of prevent defense and giving up a lot of yards just to run out the clock. I’d like to say that he has had some good stretches against some of the good teams but I don’t think that they have played any good teams yet. This game didn’t surprise me at all.

  14. BAD PRODUCT- OUR DEFENSIVE AND OFFENSIVE LINES ARE A JOKE. Big waste of time even watching this team on television. You could tell in the 1st qtr Utah was too physical for USC . This is another example that the air raid offense is not unstoppable like Harrell thinks, and that football games are won on the offensive and defensive lines.

Who in the world recommended Johnathan Smith at Oregon State as a strong candidate for our head football coaching position. Today, Oregon State got beat by Washington State. USC needs a proven winner head coach to repair this mess, not a 1 season or even half a season boy wonder.

The Pac 12 is not even close to the Big 10, SEC, or Big 12 in talent, and the teams are well coached also in those other conferences.. I still think Kirk Firentz at Iowa would be a decent choice he has developed alot of good offensive and defensive lineman. He teaches winning games in the trenches with physical play nothing fancy but he wins games. Imagine what he could do with the type of talent USC has as it is very difficult to recruit blue chip players to Iowa.

  15. Recommendated Solution:

    Offense
With a weak offensive line—–you need a mobile QB not Slovis. Start Jaxon Dart if he is available for ND. Begin to prepare for next year.

    Defense
There’s only 1 solution- START OVER. We are getting blown off the line of scrimmage. Fire Todd Orlando, and let the young players get some experience.

Looks like all the added resources Mike Bohn talks about are now liabilities, and must be thrown in the trash at the conclusion of the season.

Attendance at USC games should be free for the rest of the season. Watcihng this team is a waste of time.

Harrell is responsible for the entire offensive unit. So his future job is NFL owner of a chronically losing team. I only seen offensive linemen being bent backwards, as ours were last night, watching the Jets play. The Jets spend their draft picks putting glitter in their backfield and shit on the line. They wonder why their high paid former college stars cannot produce, while defenses blow through the line to stop their glitter.
I saw our offense whiff blocks to avoid getting hit. I saw weak tackles being stood up and bent back like blowup dolls at a Bruins frat party.
Harrell thinks protection for his stable of quarterbacks and running backs is not a necessity. NFL ownership here he comes.

    1. We all pretty much know what a screw up Harrel as an O.C. But putting him in the same category as BruinRob, who has been the Assistant to the Manager at the Cerritos McDonald’s is a bit harsh.

  24. I would not let one Saturday change my view of the HC search, though Jonathan Smith’s loss to a truly terrible Wazzu team in the Palouse does tarnish his resume a tad on this website.

    1. Fickell or Aranda. They know defense and can hire a good OC prontisimo.
    2. Matt Campbell or maybe Jonathan Smith
    3. Franklin….
as expected, a loss at Kinnick has dropped him back to Earth.
OSU, UM, and a revived MSU under a wonderful coach–Mel Tucker, loom large.
We’ll see about Franklin. After McSorley/Barkley/Giesicki left, I’ve not been overly impressed with PSU. However, he would be an improvement for our program with consistent 9 win seasons.

I chuckle when I hear bloggers suggest Nick Saban or Orgeron or Kiffin or Stoops, etc.
    Low football IQ.

      1. Hey Mike:

I think hiring a head football coach for USC is pretty easy. I don’t think it takes talent:

Make a list of the top guys you want.
Make a budget of how much you can spend–top dollar amount.
        Start calling.

I think Bohn can do this. I think he knows enough about football to know who is a good FB coach. At CU, he was hampered by an uber-liberal, penny-pinching BOT which would not pay an asst FB coach above Professor pay grade. He also had to get someone to come rescue a perpetual losing FB team.

        As a HC candidate…
The fact that the PAC 12 is shambolic is out of your control.
The fact that LA is a $#ithole is out of your control.*
The fact that So Cal recruits are leaving the West and going to the Big 10, Big 12, ND, SEC and ACC is within your control, and the only reason you consider the job.
The job has to be seen as a “step-up” compared to your prior job, cuz who wants to
compete in a shambolic conference and live in a $#ithole? Many of the names being bandied about–Urban, Stoops, etc–already have enough money that they don’t have to choose to coach in a lousy conference and live in a hot, filthy city.

*I doubt Corvallis, Waco, or Ames are great places to live if one is a multi-millionaire.

  25. Another head coach candidate who would be alot better than Jonathan Smith.

Mark Stoops- Head Football Coach Kentuck University

He has built that Kentucky Football Program from nothing. Like all his brothers including Bob Stoops he is a strong defensive minded coach who wins football games in the trenches. Has he been a consistent winner- NO. But he doing some remarkable things this year in the SEC, and this is not the first time he has made Kentucky more than competitive in that very tough conference. Might be the perfect fit if we cannot land one of the big names. We need someone from the SEC not the Pac 12 conference which at this time is very mediocre in football because it is not tough enough.

Imagine what this guy could do at USC with the large recruiting base we have compared to recruiting in Lexington, Kentucky which is not a hot bed football area.

I am beginnng to believe by the way that the top names might not want to come to USC now based on the mess the program is in, and have to work with Carol Folt and Mike Bohn who as leaders of this university have to be the joke of the coaching football coaching community.

    1. I’m not “liking” the Stoops idea —but you’re 100% on the notion that NO self respecting coach wants to look at Bohn and Folt’s blank, phony faces all year. They are the kind of people who –if you saw them in the interview room as a job applicant — would cause you to turn around and say, “never mind— that’s okay, I’ll show myself out.”

  26. Clay Helton should have been fired after the Loss to Iowa in the Holiday Bowl a few years ago, and we are now paying for that poor decision.

I am sure all the assistant coaches are telling their wives:

“Honey this is a mess at USC even though the pay check is still coming in it’s time to do the following:

Pack everything up we will be moving in December.
Please send out my resume before it is too late
Put the home up for sale
Let the kids know we will be moving soon.
Tell all our friends to send Christmas cards to our PO Box

    1. Nothing funny about what you wrote, tommyd —- cuz it’s all true. That is EXACTLY what is happening. And the team sees them at their computers and hears them on their phones while they’re doing it.

  27. Clay Helton should have been fired two years ago after the loss to Iowa in the Holiday Bowl so we are all paying for this decision including the players.

Are the coaches motivated right now to do their jobs the answer is no.
I am sure when then heard Clay Helton was fired many of them told their wives and family the following:

    1) Honey, this job is a mess at USC right now I’ve had it. There is no job security, and future here.
    2) Please put the house up for sale we are moving again in December.
    3) Pack up everything…….be prepared to move in December.
    4) Please send out my resume EVERYWHERE!
    5) Tell the kids and their teachers we will be moving in December
    6) I will work through this for now so we still have a paycheck coming in.
    7) Change our permanent mailing address to a PO Box location.
    8) Please send this THANK YOU LETTER I HAVE WRITTEN TO CLAY HELTON for giving me this terrible/short term opportunity.

One wonders what the players are thinking. I am sure their parents are encouraging them to transfer rather than watch the ship continue to sink.

  28. Utah should give Carol Dolt the game ball for keeping Helton two years ago…. Then again, maybe Swan should get all the game balls from all SC opponents for Helton’s stupid contract extension. There is a long term consequence for having a terrible coach, the longer he is coach, the more devastating the results. The defense has sucked since Pete stopped coaching the defense, the offense has sucked since a brainiac decided to adopt the offense of teams that can’t recruit….

  29. The Question on Everyone’s Mind: Where is USC ranked today?
Yes, Kiff took them from pre-season #1 to 39th in country —- but Folt and Bohn took them from pre-season #16 to 101st! That probably has never been done before…

A group of us old geezers were in a joint in Prescott sharing adult beverages, pizza and sports. I stole the remote at the bar and put on the SC game and was booed loudly. I prevailed for reasons known only by those who know my negotiating skills. (Wit, good looks, charm and picking up the check)
Final opinions. Good athletes. Not a team. No one likes SC. They will hire Meyer.
