The Friday USC Column Supplement

Jack Del Rio has made headlines all week.

It’s caused an ugly incident I never heard about to resurface regarding a fight Del Rio got into with former Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Otis Taylor.

The scene was the 1987 NFL Player Strike. Del Rio was playing for the Chiefs and picketing with teammates at Arrowhead Stadium.

Taylor, who was a scout for the Chiefs at the time, walked out of the facility with a tryout player. Del Rio didn’t recognize Taylor and called him and the other man a “dirty scab” and a “lowlife.”

Del Rio grabbed Taylor around the neck and the two men exchanged blows. As players tried to break up the fight, they yelled out “Otis.”

“Otis? Otis Taylor?” Del Rio said, “I loved watching you as a player.”

Taylor filed a $1 million lawsuit against Del Rio, player representative Nick Lowery and the NFL Players Association. The case was settled out of court two years later.

      2. Ron Riviera really showed his ass. JDR’s comments accurately reflect the viewpoint of many Americans. $100K fine is more than most Americans make in a year. Like democrat politicians and media, Riviera is tamping down any political dissent. I hope JDR tells Riviera to go to hell and sues the organization (hostile work environment).

      3. What’s funny is a couple of people have cried about us posting about politics. When the government is THIS bad, it affects all aspects of our lives and this is a perfect example of it.

        I’d love for him to tell them where to stick it, too, but at the end of the day a man’s gotta do what a man’s gotta do. Football is his life. I’d hate for him to give it up.

        It just sucks that the crybabies of the world have taken over.

Drew Brees says that he has relatives that served in the military and that he believes not standing for the anthem is offensive to those who served. His teammates turn on him and suggest that he is racist. Kaepernick gets a multimillion dollar shoe contract from Nike after failing to stand because to Nike he is a hero. He then likens NFL owners to slave masters. No fine. Kaepernick then successfully sues the NFL and collects millions on a racial discrimination claim when NFL teams fail to pick him up once his contract expires.

    Del Rio is then fined $100,000 by the NFL for making an obvious assessment – that the BLM/Antifa riots were much worse than January 6th. Absolute hypocrisy. “Free speech for some” has become a motto of the leftists.

      2. Kap was a dynamic QB for Harbaugh–truly lethal scrambling in the open field, but his throwing motion–sidearm ish–was not conducive to success long term in the NFL. He was blessed with a great RB and talented WR’s. Lead the team to the Superbowl and probably should have won it, but for the non-call PI by Jimmy Smith in the endzone at the end of the game.

        He was already on his way to being demoted by SF before he chose to kneel. The kneel cost him a long career as a sporty backup, but he was destined to be a second-teamer due to his ineffective throwing.

        Much like Jimmy Carter, Kap will be better known for his work AFTER his term expired.

I read that he and his wife are devoted Christians and have been very generous over the years in donating their time and money to charitable causes. He has been in the NFL for decades. I have not heard of multiple scandals associated with him or past players complaining that he mistreated them. If that were the case, I doubt that he would have been repeatedly offered coaching jobs in the NFL. Cal 75, unless you can provide some specifics, I have “lost all faith in your judgment.”
