USC Morning Buzz: It’s A New Philosophy On Eve Of Practice

USC opens practice tomorrow and today brings back Media Day, which will feature a whopping 28 players.

This feels like a Lincoln Riley idea because USC hasn’t really done media days in recent years as the previous publicity regime often did as little as possible.

Everything seems planned out, which also leads me to believe Riley is involved. For example, Caleb Williams and Shane Lee, who were at Pac-12 media day, will not be at USC media day.

And only 10 of the players are transfers, which cuts down a little bit on the prevalent offseason angle that USC is basically a team full of transfers. Of course some of the highest-profile transfers will be in attendance: Tailbacks Travis Dye and Austin Jones; wide receivers Jordan Addison, Brenden Rice and Mario Williams and cornerback Mekhi Blackmon.

There’s too many new guys expected to start to completely ignore their presence.

Another transfer in attendance will offensive lineman Bobby Haskins, who didn’t participate in spring practice.

    1. USC should be ranked #1 if they win their opener against the mighty Rice Owls 🦉. It will prove that Lincoln Riley is the for real deal. So I expect the Trojans Fanboys to loose their minds if SC comes out of that difficult task victorious 😃.

  1. Totally different defense this year with so many new guys. Last year’s D was a dumpster fire from lack of coaching leadership. LBs should be so much better. Key question will be pass coverage.

    1. Hate to say it, 67 –but teams are gonna try to out-bomb us cuz of what will probably be bad coaching in the secondary. I don’t buy the “Donte was just distracted last year” theory. But I still expect our offense to prevail over ANY offense in the Pac 12 (barring injuries —which would change things in a hurry)….

      1. No…but they make me remember the secondary of my St. Monica’s High School team…..record 2-6.

      2. the real problem over the past two years was that the defense was practicing against the Graham Harrel air raid with only two pages of plays.

    2. Everything is a big ? mark after going 4- 8 last year; with a new coach and staff. The football program is basically starting to build from rock bottom to build it up to the top.

  2. Practice finally begins, so no more Scott Wolf ‘fill-the-void’ pieces
such as (like?) debating whether SC’s uniform colors should feature a more bold yellow tint

  3. Donte “distracted” last year??? I remember many time Pete turning his back to the game while the offense was on the field to address his defense and keep them on track.

  4. We now have a program who is not afraid of the media, willing to put it all out there. How refreshing. I bet LR has a whole new string of phrases we have not heard yet. The same old ones year after year made me ill. I have now recovered nicely.

  5. This team is an unseen Frankenstien monster. No one has seen it or knows what to expect – (hence, all of the speculation)But one thing I can expect besides the offense being good, is a hungry defense with speed and that will TACKLE (unlike the quitters that wouldn’t play the last game at Berkeley.) This will be a fluid situation for personnel as the season approaches in terms of Juco transfers and the like.I don’t think Frankenstein was built in a day but he’ll be loose soon and the town will have to deal with him.

      1. When was that in the early 90s 30 years ago cal 75. With a lame duck coach in Larry Smith and Rob Johnson coming in as back up burning up his red shirt year. I think I even remember the score wasn’t it like the 52-30 for Cal? Lol the glory days of Cal bears football.

    1. I have always disagreed with him being a fine human being. If he had the integrity he would have resigned, citing his inability to be a USC head coach.

  7. I’ll never understand the slamming of Bohn and Folt. The university was in full free fall under Nikias. All were severely and bluntly told to never bring and bad news to him – Tyndall, Puliafito, Mark Ridley-Thomas’ son, Rick Singer’s admission con job.

The program escaped having Urban Meyer as head coach because of Folt and Bohn. Folt gave Swann his well deserved pink slip as a clueless over promoted inept athletic director there ever has been. She hired Bohn to replace B. Wayne Hughes Sr. choice.

Bohn sacked the frat boy athletic lifers Lopes, Orr (35 years in the athletic department both these humps) and Jacobson. Good riddance to the three of them. None of them are clear yet of their involvement per the ‘ varsity blues’ scandal on raising money. Bohn crafted a well designed stealth attack completely concealed in securing Lincoln Riley this past November. The move to the Big10 by USC/Ucla is a huge benefit for both schools because Folt questioned the wisdom of expanding the Pac-12. The ability to keep major moves ‘sub rosa’ until the moment is right for disclosure is rare today.

    2. rusoviet,

Even though you made great sense and facts are accurate and everything that you said is true, it is still fun to rag on Folt. She is a midget, has not clue on how to run a university, she spent $8 mil on a home, and she checked out Helton’s butt . But being a midget is the best reason.
