USC Morning Buzz: Here Is What Recruits Tell Coaches

USC keeps brining in recruits to visit the campus this month.

I spoke to a coach and asked him what the buzz is when talking to most of these prospects at the McKay Center.

“One thing we hear from kids is, `We don’t want to go to ‘SC because we don’t know who the coach will be,” the coach said.

You can make a long list of reasons why Lynn Swann should have fired Clay Helton. But here is another one: Bringing Helton back essentially hamstrings the program for a year because no one knows if he will survive. This becomes even more important these days with the early signing day. Last December, a lot more recruits signed instead of waiting until February.

All of this probably escaped Swann last November when he sent out his pompous statement on keeping Helton.

  • USC baseball beat No. 2-ranked Stanford, 4-2, to salvage the third game of the series after dropping the first two.
  • USC’s beach volleyball team lost to UCLA, 3-0, in the NCAA championship match. The Trojans probably created too tough a path for themselves following an upset loss to Stetson in the opening match of the tournament Friday.

  1. Lynn Swann was saving face, because if he fired Clay Helton last season, the University would have been on the hook for over $20 million dollars for 5 year extension, that Helton never got an opportunity to honor . It’s like giving somebody millions of dollars for doing nothing, and that would have made Swann look dumber then he normally does. An experienced Athletic Director would have waited to see what Helton could produce without Sam Darnold before offering a new contract.

      1. You should be half as successful as Lynn. You piece of …, Lynn has done more things in his life than you could dream of even trying. You’re a stupid troll who puts down all things Trojan. If you ever say anything good about USC, it’ll be the first time.
Twerp calling an all-pro, and unanimous all-American unsuccessful?

        All mouth.

      2. Pudly —I very much admire Swann and Haden as players. No one can criticize their accomplishments on the field. They both gave us lots of great moments to remember. And —- based on their post career accomplishments —- one would have thought they’d be up to the job of Athletic Director …… well, I’ll leave it at that…..

  3. Typical coaching malady with Beach Volleyball. Lose to the last seed
in opening match, and then have to play extra matches to reach final.
Beat the lousy ‘Ruins three straight this season before the title match which meant absolutely nothing towards the big one that really counts.
Anna Collier Coach of the Year, think not losing to hated rival being
swept on top of it. Water Polo arise and claim your trophy!

  4. too bad SC is in such disarray. However, there is one silver lining to this, Chocolate Chip Kelly recruited even worse than SC. We will see what happens.

    1. Who cares what the Ruins do or don’t do, we need to fix our mess. And saying Fat boy recruited worse than Gomer isn’t much to hang your hat on

      1. You must have a mouse in your pocket cause there isn’t any “we” when you talk about the Trojans.
        You’re just a troll.

  5. “One thing we hear from kids is, `We don’t want to go to ‘SC because we don’t know who the coach will be”

Translation: “We don’t want to go to ‘SC because it is dysfunctional and is losing to teams they should beat by 3 TDs’.

    1. Ha! Not a bad translation, 67. [Point of Information, though: Actually, we’re losing to teams we should easily beat by a mere 7 points. It’s the teams that represent some competition that beat us by 21].

  6. All the more reason for Folt to fire Swann soon and get a qualified AD in place before the season starts. This way the new AD can fire Helton after a bad start and immediately after a Notre Dame loss and hire Meyer or another qualified head coach with no USC ties who can salvage a good recruiting class.
