Two sources tell me they still believe USC is attempting to line up a replacement for Clay Helton and that is the reason the program remains in limbo today.
“The only reason I can imagine this delay is if they are negotiating with someone,” the source said. “Otherwise, they would have announced Clay is staying.”
Remember in 1997, Mike Garrett kept John Robinson as USC coach until he hired Paul Hackett on Dec. 17, when the season ended Nov. 22.
But that was before twitter existed.

The delay can only be:
1. They want to present new coach at a presser and that deal hasn’t been finalized yet (Imagine if it had been Petersen, who backed out at the last second).
2. Negotiations ongoing for the firing of assistant coaches (DC and ST) as a contingency for CH staying.
3. Prolonged negotiations for Helton buyout package.
4. Caruso searching for 20 fat-cat alums who will kick in $1 million each for buyout package that has no effect on HH budget.

The ONLY scenario for Clay staying is that they are trying to line up a very hot defensive coordinator, so they can pitch the idea of repairing the coaching staff under Clay. I dont see how that would ever happen in reality.
At this point, to not have an answer means they are going to fire Clay and move to someone else.
If Urban is not available, I want Venables as HC. One of the best national recruiters. Among the best defenses in the country. Defensive coordinators make good head coaches because they understand total game strategy and physical toughness.
Can you imagine SC with a defense that smothers the opposing offense? We are on the right track offensively and just need a better o-line. But the whole defense needs a major restructuring.

I’ll kick in $10,000 cash myself for Venables’ contract , but a source on this site has eliminated him. He has two sons playing at Clemson and has refused several offers over the last many years.
A great choice, but I think he’s staying in Dabo Country.

Whose pocket do I have to line around here to get Clay Helton fired??!! I’ve been paying off so many NCAA A$$holes that I’ve haven’t been able to pay off the bureaucrats at USC.
By the way you all can thank me for USC not being sanctioned! It took millions but who cares? I have billions and billions more where that came from.

As I stated in an earlier post, if CH was being retained there would be no reason to delay this announcement. Why allow the program, coaches, and current recruits to continue languishing in uncertainty. It seems Bohn and Folt are getting their ducks in a row in preparation for CH’s termination and the announcement of the future head coach.

According to sources, players have threaten to walk out on the post season bowl game if Clay Helton is fired! Mike Bohn is hiding underneath his desk scared of the football players. I’d say hire a assistant coach from a successful program. John Robinson is roaming the sideline of LSU in his coach’s gear!

I keep flip flopping with my opinions, but I can’t imagine Mike Bohn getting suckered by Clay Helton like the two previous athletic directors, because he’s actually qualified for the job .

JDR no. Franklin no. PJ Fleck no. Matt Rhule no.
Just get off of your asses and hire Urban Meyer – then watch the recruits clammer to get in – figure at least 8 of the 22 that have given #129 / Hugs / Gomer / Helturd, et. al. the cold shoulder.

Matt Rhule needs a few more great seasons in the POWER 5 before he should be “canonized.” We’ve seen so many “geniuses” fade in 2-3 years.
At least Franklin has been consistently good at PSU, AND HE DEVELOPS PLAYERS–Saquon, Gesicki. However, I’d not pick Franklin before UM. They both have female violence issues in their past.
Franklin would be an upgrade at USC, but he’ll always be a 10-2 coach in the Big10/14 and/or the Pac 12.
