USC Playing Catch-Up In Recruiting

It looks like USC realized it has a Mater Dei problem as six coaches were there today. But again, will these guys make a recruit spurn Clemson or an SEC school? Or Oregon?

  1. It says a lot that Helton isn’t there. Hopefully these guys are mending fences. My impression has been that USC recruiting had alienated local schools by taking them for granted. It’s too bad this didn’t happen back in October when the impression was needed. (note to those who love to pounce on everything I write – I picked October without thinking about what actual date would have been possible.) I know USC hadn’t contacted Elias Ricks when he committed to Ed O . His mom is a Trojan, but she wasn’t impressed with Helton.

    1. Helton wanted to go —but men with ropes intercepted him before he got to his car —you know what? never mind! —the backstory is just too ugly…..

Actually, they’ve given him new identification —new name, new residence…

      2. Michael,

Somewhere, there is a rural jr. high school that will get a new football coach.

      3. 67,
Will the “new” (but soon to be terminated) High School Coach to whom you’re referring go by the name Coach Clay H. Genderless?

      4. Michael, regarding the coach’s new name, apparently among the choices he was given, he chose “Baxter” for his first name, and a middle name of “Clancy”, to go along with the surname of “Genderless”.

        Coach Baxter Clancy Genderless

      5. Nice Ring! It incorporates all the mighty “presences” that spur Genderless on and on…..
[I’ve been thinking about this, 67, and I believe the reason we’re so critical of Helton is that we all feel he should have stepped down while he was still more or less ahead of the game ….right after the Cotton Bowl. To stick around with that mediocre staff of his —and expect to compete with the Notre Dames and the Oregons —-was an unimaginably selfish thing to do. He reminds me of Hank on the old Larry Sanders show —a guy who just won’t accept his limitations]…..

      6. Michael, Helton is incredibly selfish. He is taking down the whole team with his failures, just so he can pretend to be a power 5 HC. But it is nothing more than pretense.

  2. It is great that Keary Colbert was part of the group.

IMHO, Colbert is the best coach on the staff, and I think he has been developing the WRs really well.

And he probably was the biggest draw for the Mater Dei players.

  3. Mater Dei HC Bruce Rollinson was a DB teammate of mine on the 1969 SC Team.
He was a Sophomore, I was the Senior LB Team CoCaptain.
We had a bunch of great players from Mater Dei.. along with their Head Coach Phil Coury,
    Who was our DB Coach..
We had a great 1969 Season. Undefeated 10-0-1 .. Ranked 3rd! Won the 1970 Rose Bowl 10-3 over Michigan.
Bruce has always been a super advocate for USC.. Where’s Helton?
Another mistake by this inept Twit!!

  5. Its over…..until dodo leaves we’ll get nobody worth much except those that have grandpa starring at them or they live down the street.
If we try to play a team like bama in three years its going to be brutal.
Buying a few beers at this point is pointless……but they have to go through the motions.

  7. I’m sure Clay is preparing for Alabama or he would surely be there with his staff.

Haaaa. Yeah right. He’s probably at Hometown Buffett with his old friend Clancy Pendergast or Pat Haden. He doesn’t believe recruiting is important at USC.
