USC Still Not Retiring Numbers That Are Retired

USC announced this week that transfer guard Drew Peterson will wear No. 11 next season.

Why is this news?

Because USC retired No. 11, worn by former All-American Bill Sharman, in 2007. USC sometimes says it is honoring jerseys instead of retiring them, so here is an article on USC’s official website on Sharman passing away in 2013:

“He had his No. 11 USC jersey retired and hoisted into the Galen Center rafters for display on Jan. 13, 2007.”

The key word is “retired.”

USC literally had a player switch from No. 11 in 2007 when Sharman’s number was retired. But in 2014, USC let Jordan McLaughlin wear No. 11. Then-athletic director Pat Haden said he had gotten Sharman’s approval before he died.

So why is Peterson wearing 11? Did USC forget or not care? A jersey is either retired or it isn’t retired.
