Breaking: Clay Helton Shakes Up Staff (Again)!

Sources tell me USC coach Clay Helton fired offensive line coach Tim Drevno and strength coach Aaron Ausmus.

That means Helton has fired an astounding 14 assistant coaches at USC.

Now I was not a fan of the hiring of Drevno or Ausmus. But you know who was a fan of those hires? HELTON!

When does Helton hold himself accountable? When does Mike Bohn hold Helton accountable?

Imagine all the COVID-19 protocols Ausmus followed the past nine months during football conditioning and workouts. His reward? Getting fired by Helton.

  1. The incompetent Head coach needs to go…not assistants. Hire a proven successful head coach and undoubtedly he’ll assemble a winning group of assistants. When will the administration come to that conclusion? The loyal fan base is dwindling.

    1. Even a lucky 5-1 record is hardly incompetent. SUCC could have accepted a decent Bowl bid, but as usual, the bozo’s shot themselves in the foot.

  2. I don’t routinely follow who is notable in the CFB O-line category, but I’m hoping we get a good hire. Strength and Conditioning (and nutrition) should be so straight-forward.

Anyway, thanks to Drevno for his two tours of duty–we had some great O-line recruits and great O-line play during the first go-round.

  3. Bohn pull a bohner on Folt, the roaming gnome and can Helton. Enough of this coaching shuffling nonsense. It just shows Bohn is incompetent by keeping an incompetent head coach in place over
Money. Enough is enough when you canceled the bowl game and embarrassed the program with lame ass excuses. Helton NEEDS to be cancelled next if you want to bring any respectability to the program.

    1. JT didn’t really look strong during the drive, now did he PJM?
This was the only UGA game I’ve watched in 2020/1 but JT didn’t really look like he has improved tremendously.

  4. With the way he is going through assistants I can’t imagine anyone
would want to take a chance on working for this guy. Very little job security
and it should be quite obvious he hires and fires to cover for his own ineptness. I am referring to Helton of course.

  5. Clueless Clay, if he had any self dignity, should fire himself.

Same goes for Folt and Bohn for allowing themselves to be puppets for C.L. Max Nikias.

  6. Since Helton won’t be fired, USC should hire a consultant to choose the next O-line coach. Helton whiffed twice, once with Neil Calloway and then with Tim Drevno. Helton can’t pick a competent O-line coach.

  7. Pretty soon we will not be able to tell the difference between a game during the covid year and normal years. The stands will look about the same.
Its always somebody else whose to blame…….in this case…….yes………the guy who hired these dudes.

  8. Coach Drevno is just another scapegoat for an incompetent HC!!! Helton has fired over a dozen coaches in his tenure, when will the university realize its the head coach that needs to go.

Drevno has proven himself at every level of the game and will be highly sought after for coming years. It’s also funny they let him go after signing a very respectable recruiting class of offensive lineman.

Coach Drevno onto better and bigger things!!!! SC is a sinking ship. You will be missed

    1. Now that Coach Drevno is apparently gone it’s time to give the man his due & acknowledge he was once a premier 0-Line coach. One of the best.

  10. I have little doubt that Bohn is handcuffed and making the assistant moves to stem the tide until he can bring in a new head coach. I know he is not popular on this board, but I honestly believe these moves are all his attempts to keep afloat. I know this movement is more than Swann would have done.

It’s still all lipstick on a pig.

  11. Other than the obvious, does anyone see how problematic this is becoming. Each time a coach gets canned, a buyout has to be made, and usually the replacement will be hired at a larger yearly contract. Not to mention any buyout the university has to pay to a school they are cherrypicking from. This institution keeps throwing good money after bad. When they finally get off their asses and make the ultimate switch. Every one will need to be bought out not just the head. Not to mention anyone on their way in that is currently working at a school or pro team. I see this as an issue of Bohn calling the shots on changes and helton (being forced to change) is trying to look like he is in control. I have never seen someone throw so many under the bus for so little. Like I have always said, “you hired them originally, then you are responsible for them.” You are the boss and get the massive paycheck, you are responsible for the whole show, good or bad”. Have an inkling that Bohn has been castrated and hands tied by folt and the bot. He is not a stupid man and has been successful in the past. So yes you can say he is responsible too but when your bosses don’t let you do your job it falls on them even though they know you are their scape goat. I think he is trying to pull some levers by forcing helton to man up or “its your job” even though the board and prez won’t let that happen. If he didn’t force the firings last year (and most likely make the hires himself due to the fact that helton had no previous relationships with any of the new hires) they would have never happened. Unfortunately the hole gets dug deeper and the corner you paint yourself in gets tighter since you are now paying off buyouts still for Tee martin, clancy, baxter, drevno and austmus. And in years soon hopefully, orlando, herrell and god forbid helton. (and again) not to mention anyone you need to buyout to get them here (actual salary increases not included). Talk about fiscal mismanagement. I believe that all falls into the lap of the prez and bot and past willingnesses to hire novice ADs and current medaling in business they they arnt suited for. Good ADs are their own search firms, they know who gets the job done, and who to ask about character, and how to research.

  12. We could have had a really good season this year if we had had a good O-Line. Every other part of the team was pretty good. We averaged over 33 points per game. With a good O-Line we would have averaged at least 10 points more per game. How many O-Line coaches have we gone through since 2011? Forgive me if I’m skeptical that this new line coach will change everything. I’m just convinced that they don’t know how to fix the O-Line. It was pathetic last year.

  13. With a competent O-line and even an average head coach, USC would have likely beaten an unimpressive Oregon team and won the embarrassingly weak Pac12. Unfortunately we are just kicking the can further down the road by allowing Helton to stay. As mentioned above, what competent O-line coach would come to USC in this environment? I (optimistically) don’t see Helton making it through next year. This year with so many returning starters, we had an advantage, next year Helton will be forced to replace multiple key starters; I see his luck and excuses finally hitting their end.

  14. The stats on the defense are moving in the right direction, and that was despite having some real problems at the linebacker position. Now that Mauga is playing like a beast and EA has moved on, they can bring in Julien Simon and Raesjon Davis and maybe this defense can start to dominate. Losing Marlon might hurt, but I think they will be able to get some other players coached up and with Foreman, we will be in good shape defensively.

The offense is a huge question mark. Is Harrell is a wunderkind, or is the air raid an offense that cant win against good teams? I personally think Harrell is not a good OC at all.

My hope that they would fire Helton has dimmed.

  15. Lol Every idiot talking about the OL coaching and play is part of the reason that SC is in the sh!tter. GRAHAM HARRELL SUCKS A DONKEY. And a lot of buffoons who loved Sarkiffin, then loved Helton in his year of mediocrity winning over other mediocrity, then wanting Kingsbury, then Harrell… You deserve a crap team and dead program. Because you’re getting what you want. (And Urban isn’t coming, so again, no change is also getting what you want.) Meh, someone had to tell ya.

  16. We all know that Drevino sucked like Hoover, but he should have taken Helton out in in the backdraft.
I do not think this changes anything. The coaching philosophy is so relaxed it has to be the problem. The trouble was brewing in strength and conditioning because the coach used harsh terminology in front of the boys. I believe in positive behavior intervention strategy, but that’s for molding students into scholars not molding boys into men. Imagine what would happen if the drill sergeant in the marines handed out caught be good slips instead of discipline that creates a memory. Helton is better suited for for kindergarten than leading men on a field.

  17. Remember when clueless Clay was saying USC is going to be a run first punishing style of offense?

He still rambles about being measured by championships.

How does he look in the mirror? Does he really think they were one play away from returning to glory?

    Un burro sabe mas.

  18. Everything about USC has become one trick. Offense one trick ; pass, pass, and pass on the run. Defense one trick; blitz, blitz and make up for lack of coaching by blitzing. Special teams one trick; we beat you with fewer players in the field. Clay Helton one trick; fire underlings blame luck and explain with platitudes.
Bohn one trick; ignore the obvious let Helton fix it.

  19. Just finished watching the CFB playoff game between Ohio St vs Clemson. Clemson went up by 2 score right away. I figured Clemson had the game in the bag. I believed both teams were pretty evenly matched. But you quickly discover that great coaching makes the difference. If USC wants to get back to be a national contender they have to hire a successful proven coach and exactly why Helto has to go.

  20. People it is all about the air raid system sc runs on offense, and how little time they spend on the running game in practice. How many offensive line coaches have we had in recent years. Things won’t change with new assistant coaches we’ve been there done that. Make Helton an Associate Athletic Director now pay him for another year, and then ship him out of town on the first greyhound bus that is available. How does this man sleep at night when he knows he is a fake, and has the assistants take all the blame year after year so he can keep his job.
No offensive line coach will come to SC now it is a revolving door, and it is a no win position with an air raid offense.

  21. This is really a shameful time in USC’s football history. Words cannot express my disgust. The leadership appears completely oblivious. And, the responsible person is the president . make no mistake about it. We did get rid of the first culprit. And, this one appears to be just as clueless. And, be assured that cluelessness is not just assigned to football; it is panoramic. Just take the idea of the university’s decision on the 401k matching. Lastly, a wayfaring fool should know better in both cases. How did we get here?!
