Where Does Evan Mobley Rank?

It feels quick to me but tonight will probably be the last game at the Galen Center for Evan Mobley.

So where would you rank him as a freshman?

Did he have a better year than DeMar DeRozan? Or O.J. Mayo? Or Harold Miner?

Miner averaged 20.6 points per game as a freshman with 3.6 rebounds and 1.2 assists. Mayo averaged 20.7 points. DeRozan averaged 13.9 points but did much more than score. Mobley averages 16.4 points and 8.5 rebounds and 2.9 shots per game.

Don’t forget Onyeka Okongwu averaged 16.2 points and 8.6 rebounds. He also blocked 2.7 shots per game.

You wouldn’t think Mobley and Okongwu’s stats would be so similar based on the hype. Stats are just one indicator, obviously.

I never thought Mayo made the impact that was anticipated in his single season.

As for Mobley, I think quite a few fans think he would be a slam dunk as best freshman but I would take Miner.

  1. Wolf – what about Cliff Robinson and Tom Lewis as having the best freshman seasons at USC? You’re old enough to have seen both Robinson and Lewis play…..I was a 11-year old UCLA fan (I came to my senses and attended USC) when Robinson was playing at USC, but I “hated” Robinson at the time for how he put it on the Bruins. I think he might have been freshman & Pac-10 player of the year and remember him as a dominant scorer and rebounder. Lewis was more one-dimensional, but a great scorer and USC b-ball history would’ve looked different if Lewis, Bo Kimble, and Hank Gathers would’ve stuck around when George Raveling replaced Stan Morrison.

  2. So hard to compare over time, given how the “3” has changed the game, even just in the last 10 years. Not as much role for post play today. All these guys had great careers at USC.

  3. Mobley can only slam dunk. He will get pushed around by the
bigger centers in the NBA. He could use one more year in college, he is no Lew Alcindor. Know money talks these days.

  4. Mobley is not a force, yet. he fades away and and is not a factor in a game. he needs another year. My opinion and I am not a basketball expert.
