USC Morning Buzz: Riley Wants Scrimmage Under Control

USC coach Lincoln Riley wants his players under control during Saturday’s scrimmage.

“We don’t need guys that start to do their own thing, lose sight of all of the progress we’ve made,” Riley said. “(It’s about) trusting all that we’ve done, putting it on display Saturday, and that’ll be enough.”

Everything always sounds like an opposite for whatever Clay Helton would do.

  • Cal State Fullerton scored 2 runs in the bottom of the ninth to defeat USC, 5-4, on Tuesday night at Goodwin Field. USC dropped to 18-16 overall.
  • Former USC tight end Michael Trigg is being labeled the standout performer of Mississippi spring practice.

“I was trying to describe what it looks like when older guys played with younger guys, when there was the guy in high school playing with the junior high kids, that’s kind of how he plays,” Lane Kiffin said.

  1. Trigg was a huge loss for USC and a huge gain for Kiffen. The guy is the prototype TE that can play like a WR. USC does not have another one like him, yet. I am sure we could get one if Folty would get more involved with recruiting and make some home visits, like to Hawaii to spend some time with MG.

      1. Thanks for the look. Lake McRee is the top of the depth chart but you never know who is going to step up and take over. I love that guys are willing to compete for starting roles and the HC isn’t playing his favorites that he loves the most. (Toa)

      2. SteveG— I hope one day Bohn can say “I was wrong not to stand up and say Helton was crazier than a loon…”

    1. I agree on Trigg being a big (and disappointing) loss. Why did he leave SC? Was he “forced out”, did he not like the program, the university or living in Los Angeles, or was it something else? With Riley coming in, you’d think he would want to stay at SC, where he had huge upside.

      1. He and Dart were roommates. They went as a package. Just really good friends and wanted to stay together.

  2. Scooter,

Have you ever listend to Tim Conway on KFI? He use to do this segement called, “What the Hell did Jesse Jackson Say”? It was hilarious because he would play clips of Jesse Jackson and a listener would try to say correctly what Jackson would say. 95% of the time you could not understand what he said. So to hear him now would be hilarious because of not being understand what he says, but he is hypocrit of the worsrt kind, just like that Al Sharpton dude. If there ain’t a buck in it or fame for them, then they won’t help. They are nothing but schisters.

    1. Both have gotten rich pretending to care about the underprivileged. Pretty much the same as Kerry, Hillary, Biden, Obama and Nancy. The difference between Jesse and Al is Al is venal and real smart –Jessie is venal and real not smart.

      1. btw, it would be nice if Jessie didn’t flash the “V” sign with his hands pointed sideways….

  3. ESPN did a feature on Kedon Slovis, and it appears that he’s the front runner for the starting position at Pitt. I’ll be curious to find out if the overly hyped, Caleb Williams is more productive then Slovis, or if he’s even a better quarterback then Miller Moss.

    1. It wouldn’t take a lot to be more productive than Slovis was last season. There is obviously a reason for all the hype over Williams. I am sure his mobility is better than Moss’ . Slovis with a good line in front of him would be a totally different player, so wait and see. I am awaiting to hear what Slovis, JT, and Dart have to say about their respective coaching changes compared to their time wasted at USC.

    2. Watch the film on Caleb. He’s as good as advertised. [But, then again, watch the film on Kedon before he got injured against Utah and again against Iowa –he was much better than advertised]…

  4. Helton Update:
Check out the quotes & photos in the latest Savannah News —Georgia Southern fans are drooling over the fact Clay Helton stands in parking lots shaking hands with anybody and everybody —they look & sound like the rubes who gather around the snake oil salesman in Pete’s Dragon.

    1. A friend of mine from the bay area sent me about two minutes of video of it, GT…
Johnny Depp, I guess from spending so much time in international waters as Captain Jack Sparrow, has developed quite a pan-European accent. He’s also incredibly inarticulate and nervous. Not sure why he’s doing this.

  6. Jesse Jackson? Were Al Sharpton, Colin Kaepernick, Louis Farrakhan, Stacy Abrams and Maxine Waters all unavailable? What an embarrassment.

On a separate note, what was the reason for Trigg leaving? He had huge upside and why was he either “ran off” (driven away) or willingly chose to leave with Riley coming in to replace Helton? Or did he just not like USC or living in Los Angeles for personal reasons other than the coaching change? He will be missed, for sure. Another USC tight end loss, such as the Cary Angeline loss. Why can’t we keep our best TEs?
