Troy Tulowitzki has turned down the USC baseball job, which places the job search back to square one.
Tulowitzki is the second coach to turn down the job following UC Santa Barbara coach Andrew Checketts.
D1Baseball reports Tulowitzki will not return to Texas as an assistant coach but will do consulting for a year before seeking a head-coaching job. That doesn’t sound like he loved what he heard from USC.
As I’ve said, there are numerous obstacles at a private school like USC and it’s not clear USC is willing to devote resources to baseball like it has thrown at football the past few seasons.
So where do things stand now?
Grand Canyon coach Andy Stankiewicz is available but USC has not contacted him yet. Long Beach State coach Eric Valenzuela is a natural candidate.
Time for USC to google some more names.
Sounds like nobody wants to be the baseball coach at USC. Personally, I couldn’t care less

Mike Bohn couldn’t close the deal. What’s the deal with 11.7 scholarships? Is that the limit for all schools or is that a USC thing?

College coach money means nothing to him. He made tens of millions, most likely hinders, as a player. So over paying would t work with him. It would have to be program, winning, and support decision. Let’s also not pretend the scholarship limit for baseball is a huge factor. Hand out half scholarships for baseball and academic for the balance. Happens everywhere else.

If top candidates keep turning the job down because of scholarship issues , then what makes Mike Bohn think Grand Canyon or Long Beach State’s coach can get it done ? It sounds to me like he just wants to hand the baseball program off to someone as he contemplates retirement over the next two years.
LikeLiked by 1 person
The scholarship limit is an NCAA rule, so everyone deals with it. USC tuition is significantly higher than most schools but there are plenty of others that are doing just fine with private school tuition. My son, who just graduated, got offers to play both baseball and basketball at division 3 level. There are no athletic scholarships at that level, but he got plenty of full academic offers. There are work arounds for certain. NIL can now be leveraged as well.

“SUPPLY- CHAIN” is the repeated catchphrase companies continue to use to justify price increases. Whether it’s valid or not, we are all paying the price in one way or the other. New or used cars with a 40% covid surcharge are a robbery. IMO, state AG’s need to do something about it, sooner than later.

I just got back last night from Seattle. My youngest daughter recently received an offer from UW to play soccer. We took an unofficial visit to tour the campus and met with the coach and her staff.
We will continue to hold out for a USC offer. Even though, the city and more so, the campus were impressive.
My only knock on the experience was the traffic……really bad!

USC has the money……..they just don’t want to spend it on a baseball coach when they need to this time. USC can probably double John Savage’s salary the UCLA coach who use to be the SC pitching coach when the team was good. Only Rod Dedeaux would work for SC for $1 a year. Yes, that was his salary.
Mike Scioscia, could turn the program around quickly, and he is available.

Hey Mike!
Honestly there were many times I tried to comment in the recent months but I got tired of their being a hassle of the site saying my email wasn’t a valid one after I’ve had it for around 10 years and my password being a problem constantly so I gave up with having to jump threw hoops for a while. It was exhausting LOL.
To give my warped or speeded up analysis of the football programs new change I just gotta say it already feels a lot better in a few months of time with Lincoln Riley taking over than it did during all of Heltons days..
But that said I can’t get too excited about the recruiting just yet. I’d say we’re definitely “back” and a new team but only if we get the difference makers we’ve missed over the years. Those guys are Matayo Uiagalelei and Francis Mauigoa. Gotta have these kids from now on and not every now and than. Has to happen this recruiting cycle and be a normal thing again otherwise we’re just gonna be another brand of Kiffin or Heltons teams. The OT’s, Dlineman have to be better recruits for those areas and not be a Guard we train to block at LT and he’s learning on the job to end up being just a solid middle of the Pac 12 player in his senior year. So it’s just the obvious. I’m sure everyone else is feeling the same. Excited but know what needs to happen to change for sure.
But Riley has brought new energy that is spreading fast. I’m gonna believe he’ll make these concerns go away soon though and I have confidence in the start he’s had so far.
I think we’ll win games that are evident of the programs changing and respect will be gaining through out the season. Im almost ready to make plans to go to Las Vegas for the LSU game. Almost.

Sas,
Really great to have you back!
I know what you mean about the occasional “invalid email” thing. It drives me fucking crazy. And it happens about twice every year.
As far as Riley’s recruiting –you truly see how much Helton has hurt USC’s reputation when a guy who has out-recruited everybody his entire career [Riley] starts losing recruits to the likes of Oregon and Cal. I think if our o-line holds its own this season and we beat 9 or 10 teams during the regular season and, then, beat a strong team in our bowl game, the stench of Helton will finally lift and recruiting will return to normal.

Edward Carl Gaedel (June 8, 1925 – June 18, 1961) was the smallest player to appear in a Major League Baseball game.[1]
Gaedel gained recognition in the second game of a St. Louis Browns doubleheader on August 19, 1951.[2] Weighing 60 pounds (27 kg) and standing 3 feet 7 inches (109 cm) tall, he became the shortest player in the history of the Major Leagues. Gaedel made a single plate appearance and was walked with four consecutive balls before being replaced by a pinch-runner at first base. His jersey, bearing the uniform number “1⁄8”, is displayed in the St. Louis Cardinals Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum.
St. Louis Browns owner Bill Veeck, in his 1962 autobiography Veeck – As in Wreck, said of Gaedel, “He was, by golly, the best darn midget who ever played big-league ball. He was also the only one.”[3]
