Discuss The USC-Oregon State Game And My Thoughts

Let’s back up for a moment. As I said this afternoon, USC had a better team than Oregon State. And USC has a good coach.

So the result should be predictable.

But Saturday night, Oregon State defensive coordinator Trent Bray outcoached Lincoln Riley. If I’m Riley, I remember Bray in case Alex Grinch gets a job after the season.

The question is whether this was a one-off or if other teams will be able to steal Bray’s game plan.

Caleb Williams had a bad game and Oregon State took Jordan Addison out of the game. Who thought that was possible a week ago?

A USC radio guy chortled after the Fresno State game how ridiculous it would be for teams to think they could beat USC if they only scored 17 points. Well, he didn’t remind anyone of those comments from the field in Corvallis.

USC survived its trip to Reser Stadium. It reminded me of when Todd Marinovich led the Trojans past Washington State, 18-17, in Pullman in 1989. It wasn’t pretty but it’s a victory.

That said, I don’t want to hear the fanboys cheering about tonight. It was a bad performance. The defense made some plays, in part because of some questionable pass calls by Oregon State coach Jonathan Smith.

If USC plays like this again, it will be in trouble. But the truth is, USC shouldn’t play like this again.

Maybe the best thing is a game like this might cool some of the College Football Playoff talk that it’s way too early to discuss.

  1. The truth is Oregon State is a real tough opponent —well coached and very difficult to play in their noisy stadium. They beat us —badly –last year …and we beat them at their place this year. We have every right to feel good about the game.
That’s the good news. The bad news is Oregon State came close to beating us with the #2 o-line, #2 DB’s and #2 linebackers in the Pac 12. Know who is #1 in ALL those categories? A team called Utah.

    1. SC is really lucky to win. If Travis Dye’s fumble is recovered by OSU, They score and win the game. But great teams have a tendency to win these close games. SC is starting to look like a great team.

      1. I think that defense is starting to gain confidence. I don’t think that they themselves really thought that they were really that good on the defensive line at the start of the year. I think that they were reading all of the articles writtten about how the D-Line was their achilles heal. But now, I think the whole defense is starting to change their self-image mentally.

      2. Parcelman007 right on This defense was great against the run other than that one big run they were disciplined and played like great trojan teams of the past. We are number 6, the bias continues with coaches n media polls. We will need Clemson & Michigan losr one game n we will need to go undefeated to make it to playoffs. That’s the only way I see us making it with WEST COAST USC BIAS. LR is creating a helluva culture. Is Foreman also about to enter transfer portal? I really believe is doing like GB, and eventually end of REDSHIRTING, just my football opinion. Was he a late scratch?

      3. I hope that he doesn’t enter the portal. He has great talent. I hope he doesn’t end up like Wally Betuku who also had great talent and became a big bust. He’s only a sophomore. Hopefully he will reach his potential.

    3. I don’t think it’s possible to underestimate the impact of the crowd and the noise of the stadium. It’s worth more than the odd time out or a delay of game penalty or two. It’s goes to the heart of the momentum of the game and the confidence of the teams. It’s too bad that USC has an overly loud DJ making noise – that takes the crowd completely out of the game. The Coliseum crowd can get rocking loud and the USC Marching Band is able to compliment that in legendary style. But it’s not going to happen anymore as long as they play horrendously loud DJ music that overwhelms the crowd into submission

    4. It’s called in game experience MG. They will be ready and more prepared for Utah, in 2 weeks, now. Games like this need to happen in order to become a great team. Iron sharpens iron. Defense picked up the offense big time Sat night. Fight on going to be an exciting rest of the season. Can’t wait! Trojans about to make some history.

      1. We are going to be alright with Gumby aka Gentry is a one man wrecking crew he will keep PAC? OC’s up all night trying to create new passing lanes for their QB’s. Are defense is improving every week. Jackson will get most of the reps by Utah if not sooner. His best two plays was playing off coverage but instinctively was able to close on the receiver and disrupt the route, 2nd one was when OSU tried a trick play and he stayed with the receiver causing an incomplete pass heads up for a 5 star who really is a legit DB. Donte don’t mess this up ok, don’t want him to regress at the end of the year.

THE DEFENSE GETS A B PLUS FOR THIS GAME LIKE IT OR NOT THEY KEPT THE GAME CLOSE.

LINCOLN RILEY IS TOO MUCH IN LOVE WITH THE PASS. HE ABANDONED THE RUNNING GAME TOO OFTEN WHICH WOULD HAVE SLOWED DOWN THE OSU RUSH. OREGON STATE PLAYED ONE HELL OF A GAME GIVE THEM SOME CREDIT PLEASE.

LOOK OUT FOR WASHINGTON THEY ARE SOLID. WE WILL SEE HOW THEY DO NEXT WEEK AT UCLA.

  4. Although Caleb really saved our asses with 2 or 3 brilliant runs at critical moments, he was missing pretty badly on nearly all —short, medium and long — pass plays. It happens. What I didn’t like to see was how much he seemed to be pouting on the sidelines when Coach Riley was trying to get him pumped for the next series.
The big thing is he came through when it mattered. But that slouching on the bench stuff is awful for the offense to see [especially when they’re looking to him to lead them back]….

    1. He looked like he physically felt sick. Tip of the hat to him for pulling it together on that 84 yard drive, particularly after Rice dropped what would have been a TD pass.

      1. I don’t get it, 67. He didn’t look sick on his scrambles. But he sure looked sick on those short throws that went straight into the grass. I don’t know [and can’t even guess] what was up with that —but it can’t happen against Utah. He needs to play every down —no matter how many passes are dropped and how many times his o-line fails to pick up the blitz.

      3. While I don’t usually listen to Yogi or the Pac12 network FB pundits, they did make a good point. Old Reiser field still has a half-foot crown on its old astro-turf–that is, at midfield the floor is a half foot higher than at the perimeter. The crown was done to promote water run-off during rain. The crown creates a weird dynamic for the QB throwing out to the perimeter…
Nearly all CFB fields have rectified this stupidity, and all NFL fields certainly have. Reiser has not.

That, when combined with a veteran DB staff at OSU made for a tough night for the WR/QB at USC. Also, the Beavs were very effective with the blitz package–including the delayed blitz. I see last night as a great learning experience for this team.

  5. His name is Pete Arborgast. He’s an unabashed homer. Your too simple in your assessments. Beavers tried to take the ball out of the air. It’s getting annoying watching the leaders on defense play so inconsistently. Caleb had some issues adjusting to playing on a crown field with a six degree slope. Bottom line? A true sophomore QB came through in the end. The d came up with with the winning plays and this team isn’t good enough for the playoffs. But they are the best team in the Pac 12. Better than last year, obviously.

    1. Caleb is only 19. He is achieving more than most at that age and IS A STAR. OSU was his 12th game. I’m hopeful OSU with their bad field, their piped in noise and very good well-coached team was a wakeup call and teaches him something only a bad experience can teach and help him grow.

    1. I think we all need to wonder why Caleb wasn’t allowed to talk to the press last night. Something was on his mind other than the game. He made maybe a dozen mental mistakes. He’s young, sure, but I didn’t see him ever play a game like that at Oklahoma —where he couldn’t get plays off before the clock ran out or couldn’t hit a receiver in the backfield.
Hope he’s able to play at his brilliant best at Utah …or we’re in Big Trouble.

    1. The only part of the Times” assessment I don’t agree with is the part about how Caleb’s last minute touchdown pass “wiped out all that came before.” He won the game…but there is a lot to fix. Number One: When things are going wrong don’t go into such a funk you can’t complete 4 yard passes to your backs behind the line of scrimmage. Some of those misses were simply a matter of not having his head in the game. The noise, the quality of the Beaver rush and the bad protection he was getting made going into a funk understandable….but it was still a funk. He can’t go there again when things are off….he has to stay up.

      1. I agree Michael. I’ll give credit where credit is due and the defense and overall guts they showed deserves a lot of credit. I do think we were reminded that Caleb Williams is still a young QB who has a lot of maturing to do. But, I must say this. Did Scott Wolf really just tell USC fans not to feel good about a win in Corvallis?? Has he already forgot where this program was last year?? Geez, there’s just no pleasing the guy.

I’m hopeful this bad experience is a good lesson and will improve his mental toughness. I’m a dreamer and I’m hopeful this near loss and tough game will better prepare the WHOLE team for the UTAH game. Caleb will overcome this moment in his history and become a great leader and QB. He is capable.

“The Trojans are who we thought they were! That’s why we took the damn field. Now if you want to crown them, then crown their ass! But they are who we thought they were! And we let ’em off the hook!”
A Helton coached team would have folded last night. These kids that stayed deserve some credit. They could have quit like last year, but they did not. The OL was a weak spot going into the season, the the defense kept them in the game.

Chance Nolan – 15/18, 215 yards, 4 TD last year.
This year, he is 20th ranked QB in country – 17/29, 167 yards, 4 INT.

Caleb was missing 10 yard throws to wide open guys. Wondering if he was physically ok. He pulled it together on a great last minute drive, threw a dime to Addison for winning score.

    1. Caleb was physically fine. You could tell that by the throws he made on that last drive. He just got pissed at himself cuz they didn’t score on the first drive and he allowed his disappointment to grow as the half went on —to the point he was playing at way less than his potential.
This was mental. And he can’t afford to do that again.

      1. Caleb was throwing balls to the feet of receivers. This is due to the enormous pressure from the pass rush, it causes a QB to go into a natural “cover-up” which pushes the throwing motion downward. Caleb’s mind is too freaked out (maybe subconsciously) by the pass rush. I dont blame him. That offensive line was ASS all night long.

If not for Caleb’s mobility, there would have been 10 sacks last night.

  12. Funny Scott should mention Todd in his post, I was thinking there was a parallel too. Williams should have been drug tested after the game. Marinovich was known for being high during games. Williams was off target and rattled most of the game. We now know that Riley is human, he stuck with his inefficient quarterback while having a calm quarterback standing on the sidelines.

    1. That’s what I was thinking at first …but … It would have been very hard on Caleb’s suddenly fragile ego to get pulled last night —and we’d be dealing with the repercussions today.
Whatever crap Caleb was dealing with —he needs to put it aside and get on with business. The caliber of play we saw yesterday will lead to an ugly loss at Utah. We’re better than that.

      1. He is running for his life. The offensive line was exposed last night for the crap it is. The left tackle position is a joke, but last night the whole offensive line sucked.

I wonder if USC doesnt really engage in intense physical practices on the line for fear there will be an injury. We have no proven depth, so we might not be able to solve this issue all season long. And with the level of poor recruiting we are doing along the line, it might not get solved next season either.

Football is still primarily a game of blocking and tackling and execution. No brilliant play schematic can make up for a missed block or a dropped ball or an under thrown ball.

  13. OSU followed the defensive scheme that was always effective against Graham Harrell. If you have a pass happy coach, drop back 6 or 7, and be patient. An Air Raider will alway show his true nature and just keep passing, not believing more extra DB’s can make a difference. We looked like last years team on offense. We have 2 of the best running backs in the conference, possibly the country, but the Air Raid ( don’t want to hear crap that Riley’s different) eventually becomes one dimensional. Defense did better than expected which is promising.

      1. Thanks for the factcheck, steveg….[Personally, I think last night mighta been one of those rare times when you want your air raid offense to rely even more on the run…to set up the pass. 2. Offensive struggles had nothing to do with “air raid”. Caleb couldn’t find the open guy, and the replays showed there was one on every play. ‘

      3. Missing the big picture. He was trying to play running game catch up too late, putting the offense on defense by relying on Caleb finding “one” receiver with four blanketed. I’m gonna give Riley the benefit of the doubt. Balance outta the gate puts the opponent in a more than screwed situation.

        Like

    1. It is more complex than what you are saying. The key issue was that Oregon State was disguising their defensive looks and it was giving us fits. The other issue is that our offense line kind of sucks, at least against physical teams. And the third issue is that Caleb Williams has become a poor passer, because he is now freaked out about the rush that keeps coming.

We dont have the offensive line to simply pound the ball with a running game, we need the passing game to force the defense to cover the whole field. But Caleb Williams had tunnel vision last night, couldnt see open receivers and was underthrowing all his passes, as he was hunkered down waiting for a blow.

      My take-aways:
      1. Lincoln Riley isnt a magician. He doesnt have any magical plays up his sleeve if his players are not blocking and tackling(and taking angles to make the tackle).
      2. Lincoln Riley needs a great mobile quarterback who can pass at a high level. When he doesnt have one, his offensive prowess collapses. Caleb Williams has been failing to see open receivers, underthrowing long passes and overthrowing other passes for several games. His execution comes and goes in spurts. I think Jordan Addison is getting fed up with Caleb’s failures.
      3. This defense is getting. better, but still kind of sucks. Oregon State is a good team, but no Georgia. USC in nowhere near a top team.
      4. The biggest concern is that LR practices dont focus enough on the core blocking and tackling and creating tough players upfront.
      5. They need to solve the offensive line problems. Bobby Haskins is a bust. Is Cortland Ford planning to ever show up? Maybe they need to move Vorhees out to left tackle. Or is there any other player that can step up? Overall, it feels like there are way too many times the offensive line barely touches a pass rusher as he blows past them. Running backs need to do a better job of pass protection.

      – I saw Domani Jackson in the game for at least one play. Get him more playing time. He and Blackmon could be lock-down CBs.
      – Defensive line is getting slightly better.
      – I feel like coverage is still too loose, for instance on a 3rd down, our defenders give too much cushion behind the line of gain. This is basic stuff and not sure who is not teaching it.
      – Dye is a good all-purpose running back, but we need more speed. Need to bring Raleek along fast.

The Pac-12 coverage of the game was HORRIBLE. So glad we are exiting the Pac-12, it cant come soon enough. Referees did not call some very obvious pass interference calls on Oregon State. The referees will probably punish USC for the next two seasons, because the Pac-12 is a shit league.

      2. GameTv, I always find your posts intelligent and well thought out. I like most of what you said. However, I believe because Lincoln Riley inherited the helton years of failure which included no talent in the cupboards, he is handicapped. It’s hard to correct 11 years of incompetence in under a year. I am waiting for judgment when Riley gets his players. Frankly, I think he’s done a remarkable job despite not having the talent he needs. Regarding pulling out some magical trick, you really need a player who can execute it. Perhaps, when he has HIS players, we’ll see a better product on the field.

      4. Looking at the schedule –and our potential as a team [even with our deficiencies in line play] we could very well go 11-1, play in a major bowl and wind up a Top Ten Team — that’s quite a turnaround! And it’ll only get better in 2023.

      5. Mostly correct, gamer. Good analysis.

Williams is a very talented QB who had a bad game.
Rewatch the game and count the plays where Caleb held the ball too long. When Caleb watches the tape today of all the open WR, he’ll be enraged. He’ll learn from it.

The O-line did a decent job–esp with the Run game–and OSU did a great job with their scheme, blitz packages, delayed blitz, etc. We never made them feel the hurt from the blitz, so they kept blitzing.
They ran a great DB zone scheme–until the last pass to Addison which won the game. Dye is a stud. So lucky to have him. Not convinced that Jones is all that great. Raleek should get 6-8 targets per game minimum, if his legs are healthy (they look as such).

I’m probably the minority here, but I think the defense did an excellent job against a charged up team and got the 3rd down and 4th down stops when needed. Great ball-hawking. Gentry has been such a great surprise in the middle. Tuli is getting better and Byrd has also been a great surprise. USC went 6 or 7 years without anyone knowing how to tackle a ball-carrier. I’m enjoying seeing some good defensive play for the first time in a decade.

Never had us in the CFB playoff, but I’ll attend if it happens.
Nice to see a well-coached, disciplined team play error-free football.
        One dumb penalty–Rex Moore’s kid–a Helton recruit.

The program is getting better. Next year should be the year.

    3. If you watch the game closely, that isnt what they did. It was the pass rush, constantly changing up the front and getting into the backfield quickly. For some reason, USC didnt seem to be able to counter that with quick dump passes that would punish the defense for bringing an extra man. OSU got some pretty effective pressure by brining only 4 at times too.

In sports, the difference between winning and losing is often
    so slight and arbitrary.

    Cases in Point:

Reggie Bush, again, pushing Leinart in to stun Notre Dame
Neilson, sporting a rating of A+, shoves SC into OSU Never-Never Land

    — Situation is SC requires a touchdown, but it is 4th down, 2-min to go
‘Celeb,’ short for celebrity, was merely regular Caleb in this Oregon St game, troubled by a total blanketing of SC’s heralded Receiving-Crew.

The Trojans Dye lived another day when after fumbling SC magically came up with the ball at their 1-yard line. If OSU recovers, game over!
    — A 2-score lead in such a game as this looked insurmountable

That SC offensive line was just that, offensive, as at times they appeared as if Spanish Matadors waving their capes at passing-by wild-eyed Beavers.
Celeb (not Caleb, but only because he won) artfully dodged the rampaging Beavers time after time, while the Trojan bench had
a call-in to the ER down at sucla Hospital

And don’t get too cocky you SC defense– I mean some of those Trojan holes reminded me of the holes down at the U.S. Southern border
Although Wright got it right with his Willie Mays interception

Addison was subtracted from the game, but it should be mentioned that he won the game at the end

The Beavers had petitioned before the game that they be allowed to play the game without a quarterback, but unfortunately they lost the Appeal.

By the way, Rezer Stadium in Corvallis, Oregon is no Stanford Indian Stadium, or whatever those Quack-Intellects are calling it these days,
because at Rezer they have a rule that you can only get in the game if you first pass a Neanderthal-Level Test,
Whereas at Stanford, the Indians dressed up as Cardinals, celebrate Stanford touchdowns by whispering, “My, my but was that not marvelous”

Wiley demonstrated that he is no Hick from St Lick by declaring
“The Culture here is changing,” which is another way of Wiles saying,
‘There are plenty of Trojan openings for mean 300-pound
    18 year olds’

The ending of the game was so tragic that the faces of the
female-Beavers, is there any other kind, went from laughing-fun to
looking like they were having heart attacks.

You cannot handle the truth. but Oregon St actually won that game in God’s eyes, but unfortunately God was not allowed to referee
    — Celeb was 2-yards short on the “game-over” 4th down run as he was stood up short by several Beaver defenders. But along came the savior Nielson who had the moxy to run-and-ram the pile forward for a First Down.

The Bush-Push updated to the Nielson-Push is, sorry, bush. It is Rugby for crying out loud, and was disallowed for a century until after the 2005 Bush Push. I want some good old American football and not some Rugby version of it

P.S. I thought the game was sensational, a throw-back when scoring touchdowns was an ordeal, not 3-ring circus like today.
Drama, I want drama, and boy I got it in spades last night!

Sometimes those great players —like Reggie — forget they’re not playing for fun in the schoolyard….
[Caleb did it last week when he just thought it’d be fun to throw a pass after he was 2 yards past scrimmage]….

But as for the Bush lateral, if you have a spare 2-days I will explain my feelings.

  15. First of all winning ugly is the best solution for team bonding moments of a magical season. Every top 10 was tested yesterday except Ohio St & Alabama. Domani is a lockdown corner, he will start the next game. He is a gamer, great technique, length, loved how blankets the receiver. High IQ. Caleb played like a deer in headlights on HIGH BEAMS. Bro these commercials are making you look bad, worry about hitting open receivers, the last 7 quarters you have regressed to a point, where you need to be studying your roads instead of commercial scripts. This is not the time to go MIA

    1. Agree on both counts, Eric: A come from behind win brings a team together cuz they get to prove themselves to each other….. and Caleb needs to stop spreading himself so thin….

And for all the pac-12 referee faults, I am glad to watch a game without 20 penalties being called.

  16. Another take that is a real possibility you might not like…… consider these two facts:

NIL has created a shady system of brokers, deal makers, and consortiums who compensate players.

Last night’s game was the most heavily bet game of the week including all college and NFL games. The heavy betting pushed a 13+ spread to just +5.5. Why would this game on the Pac12 network that was ignored by the big networks be such a hot bet? What would make so many gamblers feel so confident about OSU? Why would Caleb Williams inexplicably flub so many easy passes or miss so many open receivers? Why would he seem emotionally distraught?

There are many theories, but I think you all know what I am suggesting….and it’s a valid possibility.

[Note: My favorite fix was Buster Douglas getting “knocked out” by Holyfield —he felt like he needed to rub his eyes while spread eagle on the canvass to sell the “knock out” —but he was rubbing them real fast cuz he wasn’t in that special dreamland where everything moves in slow motion —the place you go to when you’re REALLY knocked out]….

    2. Hey Capo did Cosa Nostra. Caleb is going to come back with best game of his career against ASU. We need to get Releek more involved but he’s got to learn how to set up his blocks better. LR you need to a better job of scheming passing plays, when defense goes 3-3-5 defense against our empty set. Can I see some shallow crossing routes, deep in routes, roll outside and some misdirectional bootlegs. I saw at least 5 times open receivers where running behind the defense, pay more attention to film study instead of seeing where your next NIL CHECK IS COMING FROM. Dam Caleb don’t fuck up our magical season bruh for real for real JESSIE!!!!!!!!!

      1. Raleek is gonna be special —but…I didn’t like seeing Riley go to him when we were backed up against our own endzone. His speed doesn’t necessarily get him past the line of scrimmage. That was the time to go with a bigger back.

  17. Your right MG, we have to get him in favorable match ups with the passing game with screen passes n go routes like they did with Bush his freshman year. I expect a near perfect game against ASU. We’re due especially since, the heat will be on the offense just like the defense has been under fire all year.

  18. “Two of the best running backs in the conference” but an O line that makes CW scramble to avoid sacks? The two don’t jive.
What you’ve got is an O line that hasn’t jelled and developed a huge F you attitude yet.

Furthermore, look N about 400 miles and see what happens when an O line jells. No sacks vs 6 at ND and 274yds by freshman PAC 12 player of the week.

  19. With Raleek you’ve got Tyreek Hill.USE HIM LIKE TYREEK HILL and have him get out in space and run a pattern or two. Give the defense something else to worry about. You’re not gonna redshirt Raleek so don’t waste his talent on the bench and don’t run him between the tackles!!

  20. That’s right MG, my man -let us not forget how the wheel route was a staple in Carroll’s arsenal (Thanks Norm Chow) and they got rich off of it.The route isn’t any less effective today and I’d love to see a linebacker try to keep up with Raleek.

    1. I’ve seen Raleek on the wheel route, and teams were looking for it when he comes in. If Raleek is running a pattern it would be a great time to go to the tight end, which seems to be ingnored.

and Slovis had a error-free game for Pitt. They are calling Slovis

Sadly, I must wonder if the injuries Kedon had during the Helton years never healed.
