USC Wide Receiver Kyle Ford Transfers

USC wide receiver Kyle Ford announced today he is entering the transfer portal.

Who can blame him?

The Trojans added Dorian Singer from Arizona and have three recruits coming in: Zacariah Branch, Makai Lemon and Ja’Kobi Lane.

Ford joins CJ Williams and Gary Bryant, as receivers who departed the program.

Ford was slowed by his injuries much of his career but flashed at times the past 2 seasons when his health improved.

Some of the fanboy media have been hyping Ford for several years. Now that he is leaving, they won’t have much to say, of course.

    1. Fan boys! Always offering their opinions on things they don’t know about! Criticizing the players for not being perfect! I can’t stand them!

      1. Kyle Ford will play on Sundays unlike most of the recievers that played most of the snaps this year. He should have been targeted much more. If it were another position I would say huge loss, but we are loaded at WR. Also seemed like an outstanding person when I talked to him a Salute to Troy.

  1. I’m not convinced Ja’Kobi Lane is going to sign with us but I’m hearing that they are going after Michael Sturivant from Cal. I hate losing Kyle Ford because he’s a really good receiver. But they have a whole slew of receivers right now and there may be still more coming.

    1. Zachariah Branch was really the 2nd leading receiver at Bishop Gorman. Branch caught 45 passes for 753 yards and a 16.7 average and 11 TD’s. The leading receiver for Gorman was Trech Kekahuna who caught 61 passes for 1330 yards and a 21.8 average and 22 TD’s. I wonder why SC didn’t go after him also. A lot of good schools went after him. He signed with Wisconsin.

      1. Branch was nicked up a few times and missed some playing time. He was often doubled team which gave Trech single coverage. Trech has excellent route running skills and a D1-level swivel in his hips often beating his man like a drum. The kid (Micah Alejado)throwing him the ball just happened to be named the Max-Prep Junior year of the year.

I went to two of Bishop Gorman’s games this year. When Branch had the ball in space others around him look like they are moving in slow motion……

      2. Another smallish fast receiver. That’s ok, but you need to compliment him with a physical receiver as well. Lock down corners will punish those smaller guys- hence why Mario Williams and Addison were both on the IR last year.

Gorman was good this year. I thought that they should have beaten Mater Dei when they played them. They were ahead 21-7. Mater Dei came back and won.

      1. The score to start the 4th quarter was 21-7. Gorman had a turnover deep in their side of the field which led to a quick score by Mater Dei, early in the 4th. You could see a momentum change in the game at that point. The game came down to Gorman missing a FG and Mater Dei hitting a game-winning FG.

Branch was hurt(ankle) the previous game and had limited snaps. With the injury, he wasn’t able to have the impact he was capable of.

  2. Ford and Bryant were solid players. Wish them well. But the transfer players are better – Jordan Addison, Mario Williams, Tahj Washington, and Dorian Singer. A question arises. Why recruit 18 to 23 high school players. You are better off recruiting only high 4 star and 5 star athletes and then recruiting hard in the transfer portal. The transfer players are a known commodity who have played against real competition. High school recruits are much more risky. My prediction is that going forward the average class size for high school recruits will be 12 to 15 and the remaining players will be transfers. Of course, that assumes no rule changes.

    1. When the average signing class is 25 and drops to 12 or so, you’re going to find more walk-ons trying to secure a spot/scholarship on a given team, or they sign with an FCS/ D2 school and prove their worth on the field and eventually transfer up to a better school.

The next few years are going to be interesting regarding the transfer portal, which is basically no different than “free agency” in professional sports, especially when you throw in the element of NIL.

With respect to rule changes, I am hoping the NCAA steps forward and take a stance by introducing rules and regulations to bring back some parity in recruiting. Not all schools can afford to offer bags full of money to entice players to their school

  3. Rats. Big, physical receiver who finally stayed healthy and played like a beast. Can’t blame him if he heads to Westwood or Washington then to the NFL. Makes sense to go now when you can get starting time immediately. I’d rather have him than Sturvidant but not the nightmare scenario.

  5. I’m new to this particular blog, used to follow the old SC blog set up by our illustrious host- chuckle chuckle. My 2 cents- I want to see more focus on defense- and a little less focus on the Wide Receiver corp year
in and year out. That position sells itself here. That said, Ford was a physical WR- Williams and Addison couldn’t break arm tackles- and now we are letting go a guy who can go up and get contested balls etc- not sure I’m agreeing with showing him the door.

  6. Posters here (including myself) are quick to criticize Biden when he puts his arse out but Old Joe deserves some credit because his administration is putting a beatdown on Putin and keeping Xie in check. He’s given the finger to both the left and the right and stayed in the middle. The result? Where’s the inflation monster? What happened to the big bad Recession that Putin was trying to create?

China is struggling with inflation, covid, and the cost to compete against the Dollar! Wage growth is up, and more jobs than people who want to work. The Feds are trying their best to trigger a recession to tame inflation…..I am hoping for a soft landing, and spare the layoffs. Biden has been reduced to a figurehead and relies on his advisers to right the ship. A 4-year term is all we need out of him.

    3. dont believe the headlines today that inflation is whipped. services inflation hit an all time high and that was after an adjustment in healthcare service inflation that is just an index adjustment. energy and durable goods deflation is making the headline number look better than it is. services inflation is the type that gets entrenched and must be defeated.

the Fed will hit the markets with another half point rate increase at the next meeting.

      2. To be succinct, inflation is affecting American households with a tax bracket under $75,000 in a disproportionate level. Everyone else is living on borrowed finance or not affected at all. As long as the IRS is neutered then most folks will fudge on their taxes to get some monetary relief.
