Why Isn’t Malcolm Epps Used More?

There’s been a lot of focus on USC and five-star tight end Duce Robinson.

But who has developed at tight end under Lincoln Riley?

Did Malcom Epps? No. Did Lake McRee? Perhaps a bit. Jude Wolfe was hurt most of the season.

Epps is a mystery. He is looks like a million bucks and is athletic. But for some reason he doesn’t get on the field enough or get enough passes. He only caught three passes and two were TD’s. It felt like Josh Falo played a lot more last season and he caught a grand total of four passes.

I’m not sure why you wouldn’t target Epps, who is 6-6, five a times a game. But Riley didn’t.

Whether or not Robinson comes to USC, the Trojans have an athletic, big tight end. They just don’t use him.

  1. I think Scott knows so much more about the passing game than Riley (I heard Riley has someone keeping track of Scott’s suggestions). It is a complete and utter mystery why they do not target Epps more. Just a conjecture, but I wonder if it because the have boatload of talent at WR and they have running backs who are also excellent pass catchers. Nah, that cannot be it. The mystery remains.

    3. Epps sucks. I commented on this blog before the season that Falo and McCree were the best tight ends and that played out. My guess would be that Epps doesn’t block well. Falo clearly played because of his blocking

      1. Why does Epps suck? You say that he doesn’t block well but then admit that is only a guess. He has a big frame and moves well and caught the passes that were thrown to him. I think that he should be more involved in the offense along with McCree.

    Besides, Scott has a point, if Epps is active in the offense ‘Celeb’s’ stats might have been 370-yards per game instead of his measly 350

  4. We are not seeing practices and therefore why certain players are not utilized as much.

    I do have eyes and therefore foresee big problems on defense coming up for the 2023 season.

  7. I would think that they will be changing their policy and will start using the TE more. They must have made some promises to Walker Lyons and even Robinson to get them to even consider SC. If Robinson wants to come to SC then fine but, if not, I wouldn’t sweat it. The guy doesn’t seem to know where he wants to go to school and he doesn’t know what sport he wants to play. We already have someone who is comparable to Robinson and that’s JoKobe Lane. That kid is a steal. Eric McMillan from ‘We are SC’ said that he went to a 7 on 7 camp where they had some of the best receivers in the country(all 5 stars) and he said that Lane(who isn’t a 5 star) was by far best receiver there.

  8. *Football is likely a game of marbles. You have your aggies, your puries, clays and shooters. The object is to use your, your shooter to hit the other fella’s best marbles. You protect your best marbles using the less desirable clays. Now the clays have, they have soft you know soft sides your aggies are most desirable so your clays get flat sides and they don’t, don’t you know roll. Anyway come to think of it marbles and football have nothing in common unless you lose them. Then I have no idea why Epps isn’t used more.

      Death is only sad for those left behind when you die since their lives will be reduced by losing a loved one, but for the departed perhaps there is something very exciting

    i have a feeling that Epps is not a good blocker. when you put a tight end on the field, you are trying to put a player who serves a dual purpose, either blocking or receiving. if the opponent knows he can only catch passes, but cant block, it takes away the element of surprise.
