Morning Buzz: USC Back In Portal Despite Initial Doubts

It was only a couple months ago that Lincoln Riley talked about how developing players needed to be a bigger priority than getting players through the transfer portal.

Well, it seems like this week the Trojans are shopping for offensive linemen, defensive linemen and maybe a wide receiver via the transfer portal.

What happened to player development?

It’s a noble goal but once you start watching your team at spring practice, you see the holes. I’m told USC regrets not being more aggressive after last season at recruiting an offensive tackle in the portal.

We’ll see if there is a suitable tackle available this spring. USC was going to look at defensive linemen before Isaiah Raikes transferred but now it’s a given.

The interesting thing is wide receiver. Zachariah Branch was underutilized last season but if Riley can’t rectify that he should be fired this year. Ja’Kobi Lane had an impressive Holiday Bowl so that makes him perfect for the hype machine.

But who else is a game changer, if we accept Branch and Lane in that category (the jury should be out still for Lane). Duce Robinson? Kyron Hudson?

Now maybe you see why USC might add another receiver.

Player development can wait a little while longer, right Lincoln?
