Morning Buzz: The Programs That Will Help Build USC

There is an irony that USC needed to go to Oregon State (linebacker Easton Mascarenas-Arnold, safety Akili Arnold) and Mississippi State (cornerback DeCarlos Nicholson) to improve its defense.

All three are projected to start.

It tells you something about Lincoln Riley’s recruiting the past two seasons and how far the Trojans were from playing at adequate defense that those programs are providing a spine for the defense.

Former UCLA safety Kamari Ramsey will also start but I don’t think getting a former Bruin reveals as much about the despair of the defense’s recruiting prowess.

Can you imagine something like that back in the 70’s? USC fishing for starters from the Beavers and Bulldogs?

  • One thing to remember when USC hosts a Friday night game against Rutgers. Tailgating is not allowed on campus for weekday games.

Every other Fox Friday night game kicks off at 5 or 6 p.m. PT. But the USC game starts at 8 p.m. PT because it follows Game 1 of the World Series.

  • USC baseball plays Oregon today in the Pac-12 Tournament. A win will allow the Trojans to advance to the semifinals. They can also advance if they lose but will need help: Arizona and Arizona State will need to win their games.

  1. it appears with the continuing defensive woes there is more pressure on the offense to score a lot and it seems ‘Moss’t’ is up to the task

  2. Domani Jackson was a 5 star with first round draft measurables. Great frame and speed. Unfortunately, he didn’t know how to cover or tackle. Ceyair Wright was a 4 star with good speed. Same as Domani. Riley said that Tackett Curtis was his No. 1 linebacker. He didn’t seem to know how to play linebacker. Couldn’t shed a block or pursue. Its not just recruiting who you want. It is being able to identify a guy who can play. Marcelles Williams is smaller but can play. Thankfully, we recruited him in spite of his size.

    1. Jackson and Riley were both coached by an idiot ( Donte Williams ) and had an idiot for their DC ( Alex Grinch ), had they had proper coaching they might have turned out better

  3. Lincoln Riley has proven to be a fraud so far, he has all the resources as any top five program, but still struggles to lay a championship foundation going into year three. Steve Sarkisian and Kalen DeBoer have surpassed Riley by leaps and bounds within the same time frame.

    1. Sark has Texas money to help him get players, he’s still the same brain dead coach that he was at USC.

DeBoer was the guy SC should have hired but he wasn’t a flashy hire, we’ll see how he does in the SEC

  4. A coach said of Moss, “He is pouring into his teammates,” and ‘Most’ says of himself, “I want to put my DNA stamp on this team and see where we go” He is not ‘Celeb’ but could Most be another Palmer?

  5. The defense was beside itself after the Spring Game when they boasted that ‘5 turnovers should be the norm’ every game, but indications are that the upgrade in coaches has made some difference and that the offense won’t have to score more than 40-points each time out

  6. Trojan fans come in different stripes. You’ve got the typical fanboy. No matter how incompetent the program is, there’s always some blue sky observation. Then there’s the analytical, sometimes middle roader. Finally the half full, throw shade guy. All needed to have fun.
No matter what guy we are, there is the this underlying nervousness, a simmering anxious feeling that we are not gonna shake. Under our breath, we know Lincoln Riley has never, in all his years as a HC, fielded anywhere near an acceptable defense, let alone one that could actually win a playoff game, go .500 in bowl games, let alone win a natty. This is why many struggle with program. Did he start in the hole? Hell yes. He got Caleb to put USC back into the conversation, but LR’s coaching stats are dogging him in the living rooms of top recruits. Don’t buy the NIL spin. Should we be supporting LR going forward. Yes, we should. He was the best we could get after our administration literally imposed a second death penalty ( first one by NCAA) by putting a nobody clay helton in charge of a blue blood. This is gonna get interesting.

    1. Lincoln, while plenty good, wasn’t the best we could get. Urban Meyer openly talked on CBS about what he thought he could do at USC if given the chance. Folt didn’t want to give him that chance, saying “He’s a train wreck…. he’s radioactive” ….all the while inviting extremist professors [who have recently embarrassed the living fuck outta the university] into leadership positions.

  7. Track records have fallen through the decades, and today’s footballers are bigger, stronger and better coached that last century’s models, so it would be a fair bet to take the Alabamas of the 2010s over any prior period kingpin although the 1972 and 1978 SC teams were loaded and some of those Nebraska and Miami teams of the 80s and 90s would put up a fight

  8. Scooter,

per the Jewish faith, Friday at sunset starts the Sabbath. This sucks for our Jewish brethern since they will be in Temple and as far as I am concerned, the weekend starts at 3 PM Pasadena time, correlating it with it being 6 PM Boston time.

  9. Do you ever say anything good about USC? You have despised every coach they ever had, even Pete Carroll when he was winning NC. You mocked him by calling him Caesar. Lighten up Scotty before you have a stroke.
