Beware BYU!

I find it a little funny how USC’s game at BYU is viewed as a scheduling blunder.

The thought is that USC should schedule more cupcakes because it is playing nine conference games and also plays Notre Dame. You are not supposed to play anyone else competitive to enhance your chances of making the College Football Playoff, according to this theory.

I won’t be surprised if BYU defeats USC, especially the way Clay Helton is taking the program south.

But a couple points: USC plays in the Pac-12, which is a pathetic conference. So are those nine games really that rough for a good program? Imagine Ohio State or Michigan in the Pac-12. How tough would it be for them? I’m not even mentioning Clemson or Alabama.

If USC plays at the level it should, why is a trip to BYU considered a trap?

When the Trojans played at Provo in 2004, Pete Carroll liked going there. Why not? A road game in a different environment. It’s called a challenge.

Now everything is viewed as negative if it involves taking any risks or doing anything that might have a downside.

Don’t play anyone. Don’t compete. Protect yourself.

That is today’s mentality.

What an awful viewpoint to have for a marquee football program. And if that is what other programs do, good for them. And don’t mention how Alabama plays some lousy nonconference team in November. USC would be begging for mercy if it played eight games in the SEC.

  1. I remember when SC went to Auburn and beat them convincingly. Because Auburn was highly ranked at that time, SC was noted and got some respect from the SEC. Now that was during the days of Pete C. as HC. Fast forward to 2017 when SC put Bama at the onset of the season. Who can forget the 57-3 shillacking the Tide put on the Trojans. That was during the days of Clay H. as HC.
In my humble opinion, if SC went into SEC country and played Clemson, Bama, LSU, Georgia, and Miss State, for example, this season, the results might be too disastrous to even recover from. However, if the Trojans rebuild and are solid in terms of depth and are clicking on all cylinders, then it would be nice to go down there and kick some ass n their backyard.

  3. SW is an ….. SC has done pretty well against the SEC over the years. Last year’ s team would have gotten buried by the SEC, BIG 12, Big 10 and ACC. Bad coaching? Check. Did they underperform ? Yes. Underachieve? Of course. One year. If they lose this year, a new HC will be hired. Stop whining.

    1. BTW protecting yourself should be a big part of the game. Ever heard of CTE? This is serious stuff which devastates players’ lives shortly after their careers are over. Why should they kill themselves unnecessarily?

  4. It absolutely is relevant that the SEC plays only 8 conference games and, instead of the 9th the pac12 plays, they play a Sun Belt team. Alabama doesnt play non-conference road games ever. I just wish the committee would hold the SEC accountable for its pathetic scheduling.

I like that USC is different and schedules some tough non-conference games.

Anyway this criticism you levy on USC fans is just them wanting go do exactly what has worked for the SEC.
