USC Morning Buzz: Larry Scott Sounds Like A Great Boss

I know Larry Scott is ignorant about sports and an overpaid commissioner. I’ve also heard he can be a nightmare to work for.

But this paragraph from a good article by the Oregonian’s John Canzano on the Pac-12 seeking a private-equity firm really stuck out.

“(Scott is) on his third Pac-12 Network president. Also, Scott has cycled through three Chief Financial Officers in the last 19 months. Also Scott has employed a couple of Chief Operating Officers in his tenure.”

That kind of turnover does not suggest Scott is a good boss. Especially when he and his top five staffers made a combined $8.4 million last year. The article also says Scott gave departed executives severance pay in exchange for non-disclosure agreements.

I’m starting to think Larry Scott might have less oversight than Lynn Swann and Clay Helton. On second thought, nobody has less oversight than Swann and Helton.

  • USC has offered wide receiver Chase Locke a spot on the roster as a preferred walk-on. Locke, who is from Helotes, Texas, had a scholarship offer from San Jose State.
  • The USC baseball team lost to UC Santa Barbara, 2-1, at Dedeaux Field on Tuesday night and is 3-4 overall. It plays its first 13 games at home.

  1. I don’t know who the powers to be are that hired Larry Scott, but they deserve what they get . That’s why the PAC 12 is a disrespected, under achieving joke of a conference, from top to bottom in all the major sports.

  2. SCooter,

How long is Larry Scott’s contract? If SC pays him in tennis rackets and tennis balls, will he leave? He is horrible, he sucks, he is a pencil neck geek, and he is worthless. I hope I did not leave anything out.

  3. Pac 12 network headquarter annual lease: $7 million

    SEC headquarter annual lease: $300K

Why so expensive for the Pac 12? Because Scott’s vanity required a relocation of the HQ to downtown San Francisco.

And Scott has the audacity to say “You don’t understand our expenses. They are very hard to parse. We have a unique business model.”

Scott is playing the Pac-12 university presidents for fools.

    1. Pudly —That was very nice of Kliff to say that. But, we have to allow for the chance that Kliff was being politic. I’ve never heard an opposing coach say Helton was “incredible.”

      P. S.
I think we’re gonna surprise people this year. Maybe even Big Time. It just won’t be (directly) due to Helton. If Helton takes a step back and plays conductor this season, I think his considerable management skills could serve as the foundation for an effective group of assistants becoming very successful. The more he gets directly involved with the team, the dicier USC’s situation will become.
The thing about Helton: he was CHOSEN by Haden to be a transitional coach —to keep things together until a bigger name could step in and fill the void. As a transitional coach, he was a super star —who did way more than hold things together. He won big ballgames. Had he left with Darnold, he would have always been remembered fondly.

    1. From Nwosu:
“They prepared me a lot, especially mentally,” he explained. “At USC, you know you’re at a very prestigious program. When I was there, we had a great coaching staff and they were able to teach me a lot. A lot of great former NFL players came from there, and they would come back (to visit) and teach me what to expect. It really prepared me for what to expect in the NFL.”

I always wonder what holds more weight, nameless sources or someone will to put his name to it…

    1. At least the 2018 preseason o-line HAD a coach, tebow. An overmatched, burned out coach —-but a coach. The preseason 2019 team has NO Strength and Conditioning Coach. Reign Of Troy is running hilarious articles about how this hardly matters, how the team knows how to condition themselves. As a student of film, I’m sure you recall the Tim Robbins line to the new studio boss who doesn’t want to pay writers: “Now that you’ve gotten rid of the writers, maybe you can figure out a way of getting rid of the stars and the directors —then we’ll really have something.” Could it be Helton’s next move is to announce skill players don’t need position coaches —they can coach themselves?

Without getting political, very reminiscent of certain theoreticians once upon a time explaining the inevitable march of progress resulting in government-less societies prospering…

From a different vantage point…will it be a black hole collapse or a supernova explosion?…either way, best to observe from a safe distance…

      2. James —The great historians of the 19th and 20th centuries spent a good deal of ink explaining how and why societies [and institutions] disintegrate. Lots of disagreement as to the causes —but the ONE thing they all seemed to agree on is that the death spiral takes a LONG time to play out. I have a feeling we’re gonna be watching Larry Scott, Lynn Swann and Clay Helton do their thing and University Presidents buy their excuses for the FORESEEABLE FUTURE.

    1. Alv —-Jokes are funny. The Larry Scott situation [and the Pac 12’s reputation] are not. I wish some booster group could find a legal basis for standing to sue —-and demand an independent accounting of what Larry is up to. Then Larry could explain to a jury why the “financial situation of the Pac 12 is too complicated to parse.”
