USC Notes: Physical Practices Resume

USC returns to practice today and you can bet Clay Helton will term it a “physical practice” because no one is allowed to witness the closed workout.

  • The Athletic did a story on Reggie Bush. The most important takeaway is Bush will be allowed on the USC campus if it is in a working capacity for Fox Sports.
  • USC held its Freshman Splash Bash last Friday night at the Olympic swimming pool. Quite a scene.

Lori Loughlin and her husband were in a Boston courthouse today appearing about conflicts of interest with her legal team. She didn’t look as happy as her first court appearance and entered through the back door instead of the main entrance like her initial court appearance.

  1. “Reggie Bush will be allowed on campus only if working for Fox…”

And yet Max Nikias is a Life Trustee of the university, and George Tyndall was in the student health center for 30 years

      1. “Greed is good” is front and center at ucla, now known as “Military Chips R Us”, after a ucla professor was sentenced to over 200 years in prison for selling military secrets to the Chinese.

owns, you walked right into it yet again.

  2. Physical practices? Why ruin a young man’s brain. After Luck’s ringing endorsement of the game, Gronkowski said basically the same thing. The game has inherent risks, but minimizing those by lessening unnecessary contact is a good thing.

  3. Flow: Was DPS chasing after you once you snapped that creepy photo of all those freshman in the pool? Also, what does this have to do with football season that is basically on top of us? Other than to fulfill your sickness with taking pictures with opposing team’s cheerleaders…

  4. There’s a larger conversation to be had about the way teams practice and the way the game will be played in the future. It’s not really about Helton/USC (unless you want it to be) as much as it is about the culture of football changing in general. People (and the people who care about them) are less willing to accept the devastating price you have to pay for gridiron glory these days. People are actually steering their kids away from football and into other sports. Nostalgic fans who like the guys who are willing to accept CTE, artificial knees and fingers pointing in the wrong direction will howl, but the game as it’s practiced and played HAS to change. A few weeks ago, CIF reported that participation in HS football fell for the 4th year in a row. That’s in part due to demographic changes in California, but it’s also because of a realization of the inherent dangers of football and California’s sensitive nature.

Look, I don’t want any trouble so I don’t want to stray too far from blaming Helton/Swann/USC for everything. However, declining participation in HS football is another reason why California isn’t the recruiting gold mine it used to be. Btw, it’ll only get worse from here for USC because California will be the first place to be entirely hostile to kids playing the sport. I laid it all out on the previous iteration of Wolfe’s blog: take 8 southwestern PAC 12 teams, merge with 8 members of the current Big 12 and form the 16 team “Big Pacific Conference.” Align with those areas that still want to play football if you still want to maintain a football culture at USC. Expand the thought out to the entire west coast and you’ll understand that it’s time to jump the PAC 12 ship.
