USC Morning Buzz: Kedon Slovis And Explosive Podcast

I’m hearing that as of this morning, USC is not expecting Kedon Slovis to play vs. Washington.

We’ll see if his condition improves during the week.

  • Here is the weekly podcast where Aram Tolegian goes off on Reggie Bush‘s return to the Coliseum, Bryce Young‘s decommitment, Utah’s horrid coaching and preview the USC-Washington game.

      1. As with the case of David Shaw, and Scott’s criticism that he didn’t adjust defensively, it is hard for us (and Scott) to know whether a different strategy would have worked better for them.

Both Stanford and Utah have clear physical deficiencies on defense. Stanford’s D is really slow, Utah’s secondary is tiny.

Great individual performances by Hufanga, Pittman, and Drake Jackson pulled this game out of a loss. Pittman saved at least 2 interceptions on what effectively were jump balls.

Just saying that Scott’s take on Utah (and Stanford) is not the only take. I doubt that neither Shaw nor Wittingham are as stupid as Scott suggests, and that they weren’t aware of adjustments.

      3. Sorry, but if a coach as bad as Kalani Sitake can figure out that dropping 8 and keeping the play in front of you is the way to beat this offense, then Shaw and Wittingham should have followed suit.

      4. It wasn’t Utah’s lack of dropping 8, they did just that on many plays, including the TD to Pittman. It was the adjustment made by USC to run 2 and 3 verticals against the zone and Finks willingness to let them go. Against BYU, those routes were there as well and Slovis didn’t throw them. Those are the routes that CH and GH said he skipped. Verticals against a zone is football 101. The defense passes the receiver off to the next person in the zone, eventually there is only one guy back there and you get the one on one matchup. Fink had a couple that were under thrown and gave enough time for the underneath defender to get back into the play which made them look worse. But those are not heave and hope, those are designed. And they worked well. Guaranteed if UW drops 8 you will see lots of deep shots again.

Don’t toe Scott’s company line, he knows nothing about the X’s And O’s of football. David Shaw and Kyle Whittingham know more than any of us ever will. To think you or Scottie know more than guys who spend decades coaching is just silly.

      1. gt —Washington’s starting defensive backs average about 6 feet —but they’re far from the elite players Cal has at corner and safety.

      1. Cloud —Actually if we sit him for Washington, Slovis would get to rest up all the way to October 12th (we get a bye before Notre Dame)…..

  1. USC continues to struggle winning games against lesser opponents, even though there’s a vast difference in talent levels . Utah was one cornerback away from embarrassing the Trojans.

    2. I don’t know about they being ‘…one cornerback away…’ all week we were all told how they would more than cover the 4+ points…..UT lost because they weren’t prepared and Whitingham, unlike last year, looked like a robot the entire 2nd half

  2. If Slovis has a concussion, which apparently he has, he cannot play for at least a week, was my understanding of the concussion protocol

This Husky team now has a better quarterback than Browning, a 6-foot 6-inch Georgia peach of a player who throws lasers. I saw Washington coach Petersen interviewed, and he discussed matter-of-factly SC’s version of the AirRaid, stating that it differed from Washington St’s (who Petersen has run roughshod in recent years). He did not seem too worried about the outcome of the SC game on Saturday. I’m more worried than he is.

    1. Some come back the following week, others not so quick…based on the results of protocol testing. Some can’t even run for over a week. When Slovis returned to the sidelines he had a wad of cotton in his ear, usually not a good omen.

    2. Hey John
If you’re talking about that transfer that is now alledgedly throwing lasers….well…..look at the tape from two weeks ago. He was solved by a D that confused him. He may be 6’6″ & have a cannon but he reacts just like any other guy when he is about to get a look at a LB up close.
