Sunday Night With Clay Helton

Tailback Vavae Malepeai will undergo knee surgery to “clean out” his knee because of swelling and pain. He is out indefinitely.

That’s one way to get Markese Stepp more playing time. It also means freshman Kenan Christon should start playing for at least four games so that he doesn’t have to burn his redshirt year.

Now back to non-reality. Here’s what Clay Helton said about the remainder of the season.

“I think we’re at least as good as each and every team that we play down the stretch,” he said. “(We have a) tremendous opportunity to go try to wins six games and try to get back to Santa Clara (for the Pac-12 title game).

“I love this team’s fight. I love where they’re at.”

And on offensive coordinator Graham Harrell: “I thought Graham did a wonderful job last night, especially with the halftime adjustments.”

More Helton: “I thought third downs were the problem defensively in the second half.”

Should I write more or have you had enough?

Cornerback Max Williams did not play because of a team rules violation, Helton said.

  1. Best wishes to VM for a successful procedure. “Out indefinitely” because recovery time could be anywhere from 4-6 weeks to much longer, depending on what is found.

  2. Helton: “I love this team’s fight. I love where they’re at.”

Nobody “loves” a 2 game losing streak.

Nobody “loves” losing games they should win.

Helton must be on drugs. Big time.

    1. To be perfectly honest and fair to Helton, this poorly coached team does have a lot of fight in them. They never give up, and they fight like hell. There is a bright future for this team with the right coach. But Helton is clearly not the guy to lead this team.

    2. 67 — If Helton is simply trying to keep the team together long enough to get back to winning, I forgive him. On the other hand, if he really “loves where they’re at”, he needs to borrow John’s “Patton” DVD…..

  3. If Wolfie could ever write without a nasty comment, it would be the first time in memory. I know, I know, I know, Scottie has done pretty well with the advertisement money by using his little scheme of playing it outside the box and looking for the negative in any human situation.

But for me, he is a bore. Still, I like the blog because of the posters, not Wolfie. BK is great because he likes to belittle me by misquoting me. MG because he is actually the voice of reason here. The others– well, I don’t know you well enough to comment.

    1. John —Your timing could not be more perfect. My wife was in the process of telling me I was being unreasonable for not wanting to go see her (boring as hell) family for dinner —-I made a hard copy of your post and presented it to her…

    2. John — So far Scott has resisted touching up the photos he runs —but it’s only a matter of time before that smiling Helton photo above has all but one tooth blacked out and a corncob pipe sticking outta his mouth….

  4. Said yesterday “Americans play to win at all times. I wouldn’t give a hoot in Hell for a man who lost and laughed.
I am told that George S.Patton was a dinosaur with racist views. I never met him, but his view on winning is more in line with real football players and coaches.
As I have said Helton is too Damn comfortable losing. It’s no big deal to him. In fact it is one of the possibility facts he holds on to. “One team has to lose every game, it’s okay to lose.”
That’s youth soccer not pre-pro-football such as the college game is these days. Helton should find a soccer team at a middle school somewhere.

    1. When asked if he thought it was wrong for ALL EIGHT Pac 12 refs to PRETEND they DIDN’T SEE see Coach Kelly on the field lining up his players illegally DURING our onside kick attempt, Helton said “oh, it’s a tough job to be a ref.” Saban would have said —well, perhaps it’s best not to even think about what Saban would have said —or done–about GETTING FUCKED OVER BY A CHEAP STUNT THAT NO ONE HAS EVER SEEN HAPPEN IN COLLEGE FOOTBALL BEFORE. [Helton probably didn’t mind the Pac 12 refs calling our team UCLA either]….

  5. Based on his recruiting efforts for USC this year (no d-linemen, no corners) I think Helton has already signed a secret deal to be Alabama’s offensive coordinator in 2020….

  6. that’s the worst part of all of this. the shrug and smile. ‘we’ll get ’em next time.’ ‘we still have a chance to play for a championship.’ in what fuckin’ fantasy?!?! this staff has no clue about how to play big-time football, and are just burning this program to the ground.

    1. Dude —You’d think that would be too huge of a loss for the team to bear —-but I thought the same thing about Daniel Imatorbhebhe [and we all know how that turned out]…..

  7. Helton is full of crap. He needs to go some place and learn how to coach. I feel sorry for the players, tthey deserve better. I am so sick of him. Every day I wake up in disbelif to find that he is still there. But, he is not the stupid one, we are. He knows how to rob our bank.

  8. Last year I watched the games and was angry and frustrated, now I watch and don’t care. What a trajectory for a man that that loved being a Trojan football fan since 1964.
If the administration keeps Helton next year or fires him and hires another cupcake coach than I know that they don’t care either.
    Sad state of affairs
