I spoke to an NFL coach today who attended the USC-Notre Dame game because his team had a bye.
“USC would be 6-0 if they had good coaches,” the coach said. “They should have won that game but they are so fundamentally unsound on defense and the offensive line it’s a real shame.”
- USC has a new Fall Break for students, which means there are no classes Thursday or Friday. So that means even less fans for the Arizona game, right?
Clearly the Trojans have much more talent then their opponents, but it’s undeveloped, and the coaching is horrible. And those are some of the factors that need to be taking into consideration when determining Clay Helton’s future, not just the win loss record. Helton is in his fourth year, and with the resources available to him, and the tradition of the program, this should be an undefeated team, ready for the playoffs. But instead they’re still looking for an identity, and direction.

May I champion the obvious? Helton is not exactly anybody’s idea as a Coach of the Year candidate –and we need to bid him adieu [keeping Baxter on payroll is reason enough]. But, to be fair, let’s see what he can do for the rest of the season with ONE decent QB at the helm—assuming Slovis stays healthy. USC has been through the ringer at that position —and, hopefully, things have stabilized.

I was so impressed when Slovis stood tall after that brutal hit Saturday.

gt —Slovis handled South Bend better than Sam did (but, of course, he wasn’t operating behind a Callaway coached o-line either).
Dan Weber went out on a limb and proclaimed us the “best 3-3 team in the country!” That’s an even more insulting metric than Helton saying we’ve won “The California State Championship.”

There is so much overpursuit and missed tackles on defense, along with lack of pressure from the middle. Book is not a premier QB but he certainly looked like one against the Trojan D. This almost was like last year’s ucla game, where it became obvious that all that was needed was to stop the run. But as in the case of last year’s ucla game, there was no adjustment from Pendergast after halftime.

67 —True, no adjustments —but Notre Dame did score less when they came back on the field (maybe that’s just because we held on to the ball longer in 2nd half]…
You know what I’m wondering, pardner? Dan Weber mentioned numerous times during fall camp that we were practicing more trick plays than he ever saw USC try out before….

This is a no brainer. The way we lost all of the games suggests that we could have beaten the other teams. It was frustrating to watch. The bad officiating aside, discipline is at an all time low. The team has no fear or respect for their coaches.
Beyond that, blunders that could have been reduced caused most of the loss. For instance players out of place in coverage on defensive plays cost points.
Watching the better talent lose time after time is why USC is losing attendance not vacation for students. My wife and agreed not to pay for an inferior product at premium prices. It’s like going to the Disney theatre to see a 2nd grade class recorder recital.

This offense is very straightforward and doesn’t really use deception at all. Even the little bit of deception that is involved isn’t done in such a way as to actually deceive anyone. There have been several times this year when I’ve seen our D fooled and frozen by the misdirection and counters I see in others teams’ offenses. You can rely on having better players and get over, but you can get over easier by giving better players an additional edge. I think the offense is a decent platform, but I don’t know if we’re being as imaginative as we could be in play design or the ways plays build on and compliment each other. The coaches say the offense as designed is simple, but what I see is just very basic. With regard to play calling, one play seems to have very little relation to the play that was run before it or the one that will come after it. There doesn’t seem to be anything about setting up plays that will work in the future based on what you did in the past or are doing in the present. When you do that, you have plays in your back pocket for later that you KNOW will work because you set them up already. I don’t think we really do that to any great degree, but your plays and play calling should be riven with these setups.
While the offense itself seems simple, the method of calling and changing plays seems very complicated. How does a team that is supposed to run tempo always find itself with the play clock in single digits and the players looking over at the sideline? Why does it seem like other teams are better at and/or more prone to use tempo? We’re not giving these players all the advantages that are available to them beyond their own individual talents. Add to and deepen your concepts, evolve, fool someone sometimes and don’t make your players have to work so hard for everything they get. A little imagination and creativity can go a long way and there’s nothing wrong with stealing from others.

Thanks. It’s like the coaches on both sides of the ball count on having an athletic advantage and just depending on a physical beat. Clancy does it by always playing man and the offense does it as I described. I’d love for some of these athletes on defense to spend some time seeing the ball and the play happening in front of them. There’s easier work out there on both sides of the ball and we’re not even looking for it.

It makes you count on your players executing perfectly all the time on one hand while also missing opportunities to fool your opponent into bad execution on the other.

You must be really embarrassed by the 1-5 mark to lie and say UCLA is 1-4. Also, it looks like you guys are on your way to a 12th straight loss to Stanford this Thursday…ouch! Is that a record? I mean, has USC even done that to UCLA? No wonder you’d rather think and talk about USC football. As I mentioned, I like to see you here because it means that fans from other teams come here too. You’re the one roach that comes out of the woodwork that confirms that Wolf has roaches. Enjoy The Farm and please forgive me for butting in on your conversation.

Hey, Russell remind me: what former bozo QB has started a SB game at QB. Now, Russell, I don’t need a 12 paragraph essay on what a pompous AH you are; I just need the bozo QB’s name.

I don’t care. I followed the pro game more when I was younger and I don’t really follow it that closely now. I’d be on the blog of whatever team I was into if that was the case. That’s why i’m here and that’s why you’re here. You’re way too in to USC, bro. Why would you think I’m bald??

I have to assume that since you’re asking the question, there haven’t been any. Should that make me less of a USC fan or something? Why would that matter to me? If that sort of thing mattered to me, I would be more interested in the number of total USC players who have started in and won Super Bowls rather than cherry pick one position. Think what you will about my answers, but it’s the truth that I just don’t care about that. This line I’m writing just to be verbose and make you keep reading stuff. It worked, right? You’re still reading, aren’t you? You can’t stop… Don’t you see how out of control you are and how I’m just leading you along? Honestly, you probably didn’t even know UCLA is 1-5 because you don’t watch them either. You’re just another empty seat in the Rose Bowl who would rather stay home and catch the USC game. I bet you knew USC’s record and have probably mentioned it since the game Saturday. I take it back, you’re not a liar, at least not in this instance, you’re a poser. You’re a UCLA fan only as it defines you as the USC hater that you are in your essence. I’m really not sure why you ask for my attention, but I can give it to you, what are you going to do with it?

The thing is, most bRuins consider an SC loss a win for them.
That’s why they’re still found wearing Texas gear to this day.
bRuins will more than likely never make it to a CFB national championship game.
Just owns is unclear what ucla’s actual won-loss record is.
