If It’s Friday, It’s Time For A USC Notes Column

Last month when I wrote about going to lunch with sports columnist/radio host Doug Krikorian in Long Beach.

While Doug was questioning why Clay Helton was ever hired at USC, I noticed Helton’s wife, Angela, was sitting at the next table with a USC booster.

What I didn’t know is if she heard any or all of Doug’s comments before I noticed she was there? It turns out she did and the lunch was cut short, I found out Thursday.

“She said, `I gotta get out of here. I’m feeling uncomfortable,’ ” said someone who spoke to the interested parties.

As I said before, what are the odds of such a chance meeting in Southern California?

  • Perhaps a key stat for tonight’s USC-Colorado tonight is how the Trojans do on third down. Colorado’s defense ranks 124th on third down and allows opponents to convert 49.5 percent of the time.
  • USC is 13-0 against Colorado and 8-0 in Pac-12 games. USC was ranked No. 1 in the nation when the teams met at Folsom Field in 1963 (below). USC defeated the Buffaloes, 14-0. Quarterback Pete Beathard scored two touchdowns on two 5-yard runs. Colorado fumbled eight times and lost six of them. In the picture is Colorado halfback Bill Harris.

  • The Trojans and Buffaloes are among 16 schools who will only play FBS teams this season. USC has never played an FCS team, a streak that ends in 2021 when the Trojans are scheduled to play UC Davis.
  • Former USC wide receiver Josh Imatorbhebhe caught two passes for the Trojans. He has caught six touchdown passes for Illinois.
  • If you want some insight into the mindset Urban Meyer instilled at Ohio State, listen to this podcast by former Buckeyes wide receiver Evan Spencer.
  • Villanova athletic director Mark Jackson, who would like the USC A.D. job, “was shaking everyone’s hands” at the Galen Center last Friday night at the USC-Villanova exhibition game according to a former colleague.
  • Would you believe former USC coach Henry Bibby still frequently shows up on campus to play racquetball? When Bibby coached at USC, he would show up late at press conferences sometimes because he wouldn’t want to stop his racquetball game.
  • Big defensive change for USC basketball. The Trojans are finally switching to the Pack Line defense used by Virginia, Arizona and countless others. It was invented by Dick Bennett, the father of Virginia coach Tony Bennett. USC’s previous philosophy was to deny the wings.
  • USC announced Thursday that Katharine Harrington, Vice President of Admissions and Planning, will step down in June 2020. Harringon will take a sabbatical and then return to teach at the Marshall School of Business. She was not tied to the FBI’s College Admissions Scandal but it definitely looks like another position where USC president Carol Folt will hire her own person.

So, it was the Booster she had lunch with who told you?

  2. Hunter Echols has a theory as to why the Trojans lose on the road. It’s the start time, he said. “You spend the night in a strange place and then have an early game.”
Wow who knew we lost to Notre Dame because of sleep deprivation? Oh yeah Scott did. He complained about going a day late to the home of the domers.
In other news there is no other news so I’ll quote an anonymous source who said this could be a bad Friday for football.

      1. Michael, Re: Al Capone and the Refs in the ND game, I am thinking that Al would have some thoughts involving (1) cement, and (2) a trip out to the Chicago River around 3 am on the Sunday morning after that game.

      2. Sorry for the multiple Al Capone posts (Not sure how that happened..)

But on to tonight’s game — looking forward to the young tailback Christon having a breakout game.

  3. Flow. Shut up. Consistently making shit up gets old fast, but this is a new low, even for you. Submit your resume to the Enquirer already. Also, what does your first paragraph even mean? Is that sentence even completed? Never mind, don’t submit that resume, you won’t get the gig.

  4. Scottie, yesterday, you pleaded that there would be no photos of clueless Clay Helton taken at the Colorado game because you couldn’t tolerate one more Clueless photo.

Well, you have posted another one today. We can’t take anymore. Really.

Post more historical photos, as the one above. Or anything else.

    1. Yeah, 67! [Since we have a Jon Arnett fan on board now I say we trade out the next Helton photo for one of Jon —in a Trojan uniform, not a Rams one]…..
      P. S.
It was untoward of Scott to drag Clay’s wife into this post. I think we have to respect the Innocent Bystanders Rule.
