I know Clay Helton is fighting for his job because he is trying to make normal decisions look like above-average coaching.
Last week, he praised Clancy Pendergast for employing a “twist game,” which is a routine maneuver that flips where the inside-and-outside linemen line up. This week, he praised Graham Harrell for an empty backfield, five-receiver set.
“These are things you see all the time in games,” a former Pac-12 defensive coordinator told me Monday morning. “It’s nothing special. But Helton wants to make the coaching seem special.”
You couldn’t find anything better than that to bitch about? That’s a good sign that things are improving. Hey by the way, can I get all of your anonymous former NFL coach/ scout addresses so I can send them a Christmas card?

as i recall, he couldn’t picture coach O at one of his fancy dinner parties, ripping off his shirt and washing his hands in the punch bowl!!

No, firing Orgeron was much bigger than a missed conversion.
On the other hand, even Kiffin beat ucla 50-0.
I saw Neuheisel at a farmers market the very next day. He looked absolutely miserable, being dragged among the stands by his wife. Totally shell-shocked, he couldn’t utter a word.
Hated to see that happen to the guy who promised “to end the LA football monopoly.”

Loved that game. Kifin had to call off the dogs in the 3rd quarter.

we still love our Neu. you have to recognize while he had a terrible run, i think every one of his seasons ended with him having to use his third in some cases fourth stringer QB. Big Ben Olson was fragile’ and we had walk on’s starting games towards the end. Patrick Cowan was gutty but in reality he was a two star qb signed to run the scout team. we even played a fourth stringer walk on who was so scared i think he fumbled his first two snaps! no we never got to see the Neu who engineered the great comeback wins at WA and Colo. no ammo.

He would wear out the tuxedo shirt. Ed O seems like he would be ready to party while still looking classy and feeling comfortable but he got his a** handed to him by Notre Dame and Ucla so he didn’t show me much. A lot of coaches inspire victory like against Stanford. Look how Helton beat #4 Utah. If Ed O beats Bama I’d say he’s a big boy coach. Until then he’s just 10-3 or 11-2 man to me.
