Ed Orgeron: “I deserved to be the head coach (at USC)”

ESPN did a story on Ed Orgeron that gets emotional when he talks about USC. It’s by far the best part of the video.

“I thought I deserved to be the head coach there,” Orgeron said.

On his last team meeting at USC: “It was like a funeral. It was hard. Man, that was my family. I told my Kelly, Besides the day I buried my father, this has been the worst day of my life.”

USC part is at 1:39.

  1. Pat Haden is the gift that keeps on giving. I used to think the guy was a great person, but a few too many knocks on the helmet during his pro career changed him. He ignored the true fan base and went with the deep pockets on his choice for coach.
Looking back he had an okay college career, a not so great pro career and then a bland TV personality career before being picked as Athletic Director. He was arguably the smartest man to serve as Athletic Director, being a Rhodes scholar, but he wasn’t brilliant about running a department.
USC is also to blame in that they thought the figure head was better than a department head. I don’t know if the tarnished legacy he left will ever clear the sewer, but I wouldn’t cross the street to whizz on him if he were on fire 🔥

    1. Remember back in April 2016 he suddenly began telling everyone he was ill? In fact he might have been but another reason was that LA Times report of his personally plundering the Mayr Foundation for himself ($70k p/yr) his sister-in-law ($46k p/yr) and his daughter ($40k p/yr) all three – for over 12 years. The best year for this ‘troika’ was 2014 they skimmed a cool $244,000 while distributing $645,000

Swann got hired in May and the Times article came out in June. But Pat soldiered, no blowback for Pat no, he continued putting the finishing touches of his ‘vision’ of the Coliseum while he and Nikias felt duty bound to throw Bush out the door

    2. I’ll say it again, Coach O saved the bozo u FB Program. Coach O’s reward: a St. Pat butcher knife deep in his back.

Sadly, I don’t remember any Rah-Rah/Pimps lemmings expressing outrage at St. Pat’s calculated duplicity. Actually, when you think about it, Sark the Alky was a much better fit for the Clown U culture than the gruff, fight on Coach O.

I don’t think there’s a person at Clown U who’s happier for how things worked out for Coach O than me!

      1. So what do you think about the bruins and trojans basketball teams?

        AND……

Can I get a serious assessment of what you’ve seen or heard about our team so far?

    3. There’s a big difference between being book smart and having common sense. Pat’s connections and charm carried him to the pinnacle of his career, leading the USC Athletic Department, and he proved to be a miserable failure at best and a destructive cyclone at worst.

    4. A little bit harsh analysis. Haden was the quarterback of the 1974 team that won a national championship and orchestrated the Rose Bowl victory over Ohio St. that put SC over the top….He took the Rams to a playoff game…He was a pretty good commentator on the ND telecasts. For example, “That is illegal in all states except Utah.”

      1. Haden was a shit commentator for ND. How could any Trojan get on his knees and do color for that bullshit school? He was a good QB at USC and quite average as a Ram. In the end, he got caught up with the power group (Riordan Law firm) and then sucked off Nikias because he wanted a politician swamp greaseball to take over for Garrett and not fight the NCAA. He is now out in Palm Springs wondering how it all turned to shit. It is all on you Pat.

  2. Mike Garrett, Pat Haden, and Lynn Swann were not qualified to be athletic directors , that’s why none of them knew what qualities to look for in a head football coach. Daryl Gross had to talk Garrett into giving Pete Carroll a chance at the job, so he doesn’t get credit for that, his claim to fame is Paul Hackett 😂. Ed Orgeron has all the qualities you look for to lead a program, and his strength was leadership. He’s everything Clay Helton isn’t .

    1. You really think he would come back after getting hosed the last time he was at USC? That ship has sailed along time ago.
He coaches for Lsu and the whole state of Louisiana now, he says that after every victory every game they interview him in. He’s a rajun Cajun through and through it’s in his blood and if they were to win the natty this year he would basically be given a blank check to stay. Orgeron is not leaving Lsu ever until he retires. The worst mistake that Haden and company made the day they picked a drunk instead of coach O

    2. That Pasadena, would be a fools errand. Ed is back home close to his family.
He’s building something good at LSU. Unfortunately we can’t roll back the clock to correct errors.

Let’s move forward and find the Next Ed or Marv, then we can Fight On.

  3. Well, I like but I would not have hired him. I still feel the same way. His emotional immaturity was on full display. So, you do not the decision and you pick up your marbles and go home. And, you refused to see the kids through that emotional period by leaving. After claiming to love them so much. I hope he finally grew up. I still would not hire him.

  4. I’m happy for him and wish him tons of success at LSU. And until the day SC plays LSU I’ll root for him. All I’ve ever read or heard from players was how great of a guy he was to be around, and he certainly coached some great SC d-lines. Best of luck to Coach O – I’m one of many Trojans rooting for ya.
