Please No Kedon Slovis-Sam Darnold Comparisons

I’m not a big fan of stat comparisons. When Kedon Slovis had his third 400-yard passing game of the season, the sycophants start mentioning things like Sam Darnold had only one 400-yard game in two seasons (the Rose Bowl).

Do we need to point out this is an Air Raid offense? That Slovis threw 55 passes in a game? That USC has trouble running the ball?

Do they mention USC running backs have rushed for 100-or-more yards only twice this season?

You know what matters? Winning. Beating Oregon at the Coliseum. Or BYU in overtime.

Enjoy Slovis without dragging Darnold into it.

  1. Both Darnold and Slovis were on the bench when their respective seasons started.
Both Darnold and Slovis had/have to deal with an O-line that can’t protect them.
Both Darnold and Slovis can make plays on the run.
Both Darnold and Slovis throw more than a few passes they shouldn’t
Both Darnold and Slovis have bailed out their head coach.

  2. Sam was a year in and Slovis is brand new ( Freshman v. RF). They’re both exceptional. USC football has enjoyed an embarrassment of riches. Awesome.

    1. And Sam was the scout team QB during Kessler’s Senior year as the Trojan’s compiled a lackluster 8-6 record. Sam did win the service award for best scout teamer–wreaking havoc against the starting USC defense all year long.

That said, aren’t we fortunate to have such a wealth of fine QB’s over the last 20 years? I don’t buy into the “dual threat” QB myth. It is a great way to win a lot of games in HS and college, but over the long term (including at USC) I’d rather have a Brees, Brady, Manning than a Manziel/Mayfield/Lamar Jackson etc.

  3. Beats having JT Daniels as the starter i.e. if JT were still the starter anyone think we’d be at 6 – 4?

NYJ beat DC today Darnold threw for 4 td.

BTW yesterday the women’s soccer advanced to 2nd round in regional NCAA tourney bydefeating CSUF 5 – 1. This Friday’s game against TX A&M with a preliminary btwn. Santa Clara Univ and OK St. – winners face off on Sunday all matches at USC.

    1. Yep, we are 6-4 in the Pac 12, with the 12th ranked passer in the country, who happens to be a freshman, the best receiving corps, great RBs (yes, some injuries), and overall ranking of the last 5 classes is 5th in the country.

6-4? In the Pac-12? Lost to BYU? Nearly lost to Colorado?

      1. Darnold threw 50 or more passes twice, 40 or more passes five times, and averaged 35 passes per game over two years. Slovis threw 35 times against Cal. Like it or not, sports are often about comparisons. USC was not shy about throwing the ball when Darnold was quarterback, don’t pretend otherwise.

      2. A decent skilled and proven coach would have had us – today 18th November 2019 – @ 10 – 1 (OR sole loss).

  4. The writer doesnt get that pass because he will compare players or drag players through his chicken c…….e articles i.e. bagging on JT Daniels who had his knee blown out.

  5. The only situation I would compare to Sam Darnold to, is the fact that Clay Helton relies solely on future # 1 draft picks to win games. So when Tyler Vaughns, and Michael Pittman move on, USC will fall flat on their face. Just as they did when Darnold left .

    1. Right because Pittman and Vaughns are the same as Sam! XD What happened to USC after Sam left even WITH Vaughns and Pittman????

  6. Slovis is better than Darnold and Wolf can’t tolerate that. All we can hope is that Slovis does not bail out Hugs.

    1. Slovis didn’t win a Rose Bowl or lose only 1 game his freshman year and you can’t handle THAT. The ONLY stat that matters is wins. Sam is a winner. Slovis isn’t. What happened against Iowa in the Holiday bowl again…?
