What Is Mike Bohn Doing Today?

What do you think Mike Bohn is doing today?

Putting a list together of football candidates? Putting out some feelers to agents? Bohn has hired football coaches before so he knows how to do this.

In the past, Mike Garrett would make an assistant athletic director contact coaches and do little legwork himself. Pat Haden awkwardly reached out to agents and sometimes met with coaches like Jack Del Rio. Things never seemed to go anywhere when Haden did a search. Mainly, because he wasn’t that interested in conducting a real search.

Haden interviewed Steve Sarkisian and Chris Petersen in the same day and basically ended his search there.

I’m sure Bohn has a long list. The wish list (Urban Meyer) and the realistic list (everyone else). I also think he will perform due diligence on the candidates.

This is really the final week Bohn can work at a relaxed pace. By a week from Monday, he might be furiously setting up meetings with coaching candidates.

  • Wide receiver Drake London was named the Pac-12 freshman player of the week. Forward Nick Rakocevic was named Pac-12 player of the week.

  1. Timing is everything now that seniors can ink an agreement LOI early. Some might switch if the outlook is optimistic. The real question is will there be a wholesale change? I can see getting rid of Defensive coordinator, Special Teams and maybe Offensive coordinator, but surely some of the coaches are doing their jobs?
    Who are the good assistant coaches?

      1. I agree with maybe one or two exceptions. Competent head coaches will bring in their own staff. They may interview one or two of the existing guys, but usually there is a wholesale change when a new head coach is brought in.

    2. Greg Burns has done a great job with a bunch of freshman DB’s–with both safeties out for extended periods of time (and we were thin at the safety already due to the usual transfers).

      Mike Jinks has done a great job with all 5 RB’s (add in Amon Ra). The RBS hit the hole hard, with no dancing (Carr sometimes), have not fumbled (excessively), have done a GREAT job receiving out of the backfield, and have done OK picking up the blitz.

      Chad K has not had great DE talent to work with, but Pili, Tufele, and Tuipulotu have played well all year with the exception of ND.

      Keary Colbert and the TE/WRs? Of course.

      I actually like Harrell, but I am likely in the minority. Probably some On job training going on for GH–esp vs BYU.

      Strength and conditioning–it’s not rocket science.
      (I practiced medicine for 30 years. Building strong, fit teenagers is easy).

  3. Maybe Scott should lead the search… He would have a long list of anonymous NFL coaches, former SC players, former SC coaches, and several other fairy tale contacts to choose from….

    I can’t wait to read Scottie boy’s reactions and outrage next week after we beat Ucla, and there’s no immediate announcement on the coaching situation. Then, I’ll be rolling in laughter when Bohn makes an announcement that he is keeping Clay after an 8-4 season in which 2 games were lost by a combined 6 points, we played with a back-up QB, back-up RB’s, and back-up LB’s for the majority of the season….. and Scott’s head absolutely explodes…

  5. Looking forward to basketball season and potential of 25 win season, plus post season tourney possibilities of a sweet 16 appearance…could happen with no major injuries.
