2004 Rewind: USC vs. Virginia Tech

I remember this trip pretty vividly. A game at the nation’s capital (or 11 miles away) made this a marquee game.

USC practiced at the University of Maryland on a really hot, humid day before the game. Terps coach Ralph Friedgen showed up to watch and say hi to Pete Carroll.

The attendance at FedEx Field was 91,665 and quite a few USC players who made this trip said it was the loudest or one of the loudest games they ever played in, thanks to a pro-Virginia Tech crowd.

This was really a big moment for Reggie Bush. He had a pretty good freshman season but this game really showed how much of a game-changer he was. If you watch the highlights, Norm Chow really gave the defense fits by getting Bush the ball via the air.

And it might seem hard to remember now that USC only led, 14-13, with less than six minutes left in the game. Bush made the big play there too.

If you have a really good memory, a big play occurred with Virginia Tech leading 10-7 in the third quarter. Tech QB Bryan Randall hit Josh Hyman for a 32-yard pass play that got down to the USC 12-yard line. But the completion was overturned by an offensive interference call on Hyman.

Virginia Tech coach Frank Beamer said in his autobiography it was the one of the worst calls he ever saw.

  1. Great description, Scottie, it was Lendale on the ground against the always-tough Tech defense and I believe there were 3 passing TDs to Reggie to win the game.

    1. “Norm Chow really gave the defense fits by getting Bush the ball via the air”…. too bad Naamie was gone on 4th and 2 in the Texas game.

  2. Flow. Your game is going to get slow and old really fast. There are millions of combinations. And the fact that you hone in on me is quite disturbing. Especially with all the real troublemakers on this below average blog. Clean it up, asshole.

      1. Appreciate that, MG. I just don’t see why I’m being specifically blocked on this blog. I’ve always appreciated and respected your opinions. Just not Flow’s. And for that I’m being blocked? Not right. Again, especially with some of the heinous comments on here?

Now lets’ examine your typical insulting post, 04IQ, beginning with the greeting, filled with paranoia and ending with an obscenity.

Has the light bulb gone on yet in that pea brain of yours?

  4. I was at this game and remember being glad to escape with a win. VA Tech fans were insane and not in a good “hey that’s a really passionate fan base” kind of way. Just crazy knuckle dragging hillbillies. Fed Ex Field was a dump too and I remember expecting better since it was a relatively new an NFL stadium at the time.
