USC Notes: Lots Of Effort But Helton-Era Weaknesses Exposed

One quick take I got from a USC coaching staff member today:

“There was a good effort and attitude. At the same time, after watching a few practices, some coaches were wondering what’s really going on here the last few years.”

  • USC is in position to land five-star offensive tackle Josh Conerly following a successful weekend visit.
  • Former USC offensive tackle Casey Collier has transferred to Oklahoma State.
  • In a twist, UCLA spring practices will be open to the public while USC’s are not. Traditionally, USC’s always held more open practices.
  • Nothing like Cinderella in the NCAA Tournament: Three of the Final Four teams were ranked in the top 10 of the AP Top 25 preseason poll: No. 3 Kansas; No. 4 Villanova; No. 9 Duke and No. 18 North Carolina.
  • USC is now offering a minor in podcasting.

    1. …and I HOPE the new staff is not really surprised at what they’re seeing at practice….I mean did they watch any game film? Did they check out last year’s won/loss record?

    3. You had to have been up close and personal to see just what a sh*t show Helton created over the years. You had to be there to see how toxic it was. He was less than zero. No one would ever think that a professional power 5 coach could be so destructive.

      1. It was all there for the Athletic Director to see — but our A.D. (and our ding-a-ling Prez) were too woke to do anything about it. As long as Helton didn’t “do drugs or play around” he was allowed to recruit and fuck up as many student athletes as he wanted. What a disgraceful thing to do to kids who’ve worked hard all thru high school to develop skill sets they hope will be furthered by a good college program.

  3. Some coaches were “WONDERING” what went on under Helton? Really? Check out Scott’s favorite photo of Helton [above] for answers. [He didn’t have time for offense or defense….he was concentrating on learning how to breathe thru his nose]

    1. Good call, John. Helton posed for today’s photo. Scott lost the old one. He emailed Helton about it —and 2 days later he got this wonderful re-creation of Clay’s famous sideline expression….. along with a note which read “I’m assuming you want the clueless one, right?”

  7. Sorry, folks, but I can’t let this go– they’re even talking about the
    Smith-Rock thing on sports talk radio. Well, it might be a stretch, but a fight is sports, right?

    They talked about how the one female comedian who came flying in with a spiderman costume said, “I have been away for a while trying to get out of that costume. Is it just me, or is there a different vibe in here?”

    Or “That was the greatest night in the history of television,” uttered Rock, which may prove to be prophetic.

    And there was a history of some bad blood between Rock and the Smiths when years ago Rock commented how Jada Smith’s boycotting the Academy Awards (for not having any nominees of color) was like Rock boycotting Rihanna’s panties– he wasn’t invited.

    Trouble is all this bad-boy commotion stripped and eclipsed the night of the celebration of so many Latins and blacks having a field day with the awards, and CODA’s wonderful account of deaf people being deafened.

    Answer me this since you are our Oscar anchorman, what the heck was Lizza Minelli doing out there? I felt bad for her. I thought the Oscars brought her out like Sea World brings out the seals, all show. That was horrible and embarssing for her. my opinion.

  20. Clay Helton is an absolute disgrace of a man and a football coach

    He allowed our once proud program to be overrun with thugs, goons, rapists and lazy liberal sissies who don’t appreciate the Value of their free educations to play a game. Practices were routinely soft and full of rap music and a thug culture. Compared to an Alabama or ND practice with a business like approach and players buying in to their training

    He also employed coaches who abused drugs like Harrell and Orlando slamming whip it’s in his office. They let the thugs run wild and probably encouraged the drug use or even supplied them. There was absolute NO discipline and standards. It was a liberal nightmare in more than one way

    Helton allowed us to be overrun with filth just like liberals allowed the city to be destroyed by violent crime and homeless drug addicts. Liberal leadership and Helton have a lot in common actually. Both are helpless and wait on others to save their incompetence! NOT anymore it’s time Riley restore us to proud status by purging the scum off our streets and bringing the program back to greatness!
