The USC Friday Notes Column Supplement

Some of you might remember the Woody’s Smorgasburger at the end of the Row.

Here it is in 1968.

  • USC graduate Herb Alpert, who was a member of the marching band and gymnastics team in college, returned for a football game in 1968.
  • Nothing to see here. Just the train coming on to Colorado Blvd. in Pasadena. The building on the left is now the site of Barney’s Beanery.

  1. Scooter,

I have been to Barney’s Beanery. On the east side of Barney’s they have tv’s on the outside with chairs and tables so that you can watch the Minions of Satan (dodgers) play. I HATE THE bums err dodgers. I am the offical president of the Offical Dodger Hater Club.

    2. PT: I generally like the Dodgers but I hate Dodger dogs. Farmer John franks are atrocious. I was never a fan of Tommy Lasorda either. Do I qualify to be in your club? Are there any dues or fees?

      1. Plow Horse,

There are only two things that i like about the dodgers and they are both gone. they were Vin Scully, who is the best and Farmer John hot dogs that were served at the bum’s stadium. Farmer John is gone as well. Time to fully hate now.

      1. I am an Angel fan. NO comparison, dodger stadium is a dump, on the second level you have a low ceiling so that you can’t see high fly balls. At Angel staduim in every seat, you can see the full flight of the ball. I have been four times to Angel stadium this year. Im going on Aug 14 that sunday to see the twins.

      3. Geroge,

I used to tolerate the dodgers but with all the brainwashing about their blue and that they can’t do any wrong, I became disenchanted with them. Besides, even though the Angels were a minor league team, they became a major league team and an original from LA. I know they will never have the same history of the dodgers, but have been following them since the 60’s. I saw their first triple play in a spring game against the yankees back in the 60’s.

    4. I would qualify as the VP of that club.

Was not pleased when they signed the TWC deal. Was not going to lose the Pac-12 Network just so I could watch Los Doyers.

      1. 1958 the Dodgers move to L.A. and are one of the worst teams
1959 they win the World Series with the Chinese screen and Moon shots
1960s win 2 more World Series with Koufax, Drysdale, and Maury Wills
!980s Garvey, Cey, Lopes and Russell and another title
1988 The aforementioned Gibson World Series (one at bat)
        2020 Another World Series Title
2022 Betts, Trae and Freddie. Beat the Mets and hated Yankees

  3. Herb Alpert- Hwy 101 song was a classic. Check out the videos on You Tube. No music like that around today. He actually performed at halftime at a USC football game with his band the Tijuana Brass.

Woody’s was terrific! Their swiss burgers were delicious, and their self service dessert table was awesome. Use to go to the one near USC, and also in El Segundo as a kid.

    1. Just had to take a trip down memory lane, GT, and sure enough, #1 SC beat #2 Tulane in the Rose Bowl following the 1931 season to win the National Championship, and thus avenging the 13-7 first game defeat to St. Mary’s before 70,000 in the coliseum.

First games are always a little tricky as the colleges are trying to figure out their new team (on average there is a 25% turnover each year)

I think the team that beat us that year, St. Mary’s, got beat by the San Francisco Club …which I think [impossibly] split it’s team in half to play some Hawaiian Club football team AND some Pac 8 team on the same weekend — [I’ve already forgotten the details …but Google 1931 San Francisco Club Football team for the lowdown….. if you give a crap —which I hope you don’t]….

  6. California is a disaster. A terrible economy due to lock downs, businesses fleeing the state, an unreliable power grid, out of control fires, rampant crime, DAs that wont enforce the law, drug addiction, soaring suicides and mental health issues, homelessness, lousy public schools controlled by leftist teacher’s unions, an open southern border, and unaffordable housing. So what is Newsom doing about it? Nothing. His policies created most of the problems. But he is now concerned about UCLA going to the B10 without seeking his consent as a UC board member. He also has begun campaigning for President in Florida. What a joke. Get your priorities right and work to resolve the problems we have in California. Newsom is delusional.

  7. That picture at Colorado Blvd. is of the Santa Fe “Chief”, probably taken in the late 1940s or early 1950s. In this shot, the Chief is leaving Pasadena station, about to turn east and run alongside Walnut St. Typically the Chief would leave LA Union Station at noon, making its first station stop in Pasadena at around 12:30 on its way to Chicago. The Trojans used to travel by train to South Bend for the Notre Dame game, although I am sure that by the 1950s air travel was no longer considered risky and became the preferred mode of travel.
