Morning Buzz: USC Linebacker Evaluation

Of all the USC transfers, perhaps the most intriguing player is linebacker Mason Cobb of Oklahoma State, because he plays a position of need for the defense.

So I asked a Big 12 offensive coach who faced Oklahoma State and watched all of the Cowboys’ game films to the point of facing them.

“He’s a physical linebacker and can be a leader for USC,” the coach said. “He’s a good pass rusher. Not elite from a speed standpoint. Kind of a typical interior player. Solid and a good tackler. A leader but not a star. He’ll make them better, from what I saw last season. Is he an All-American? No.”

  1. coach: “Is he an All-American? No.”

The same question was asked about Tuli, prior to the 2022 season

Opinions are like assholes, some just stink more than others!

I am interested in the role Lee will play next season. I predict limited, especially in obvious passing situations. Will Mason replace Lee as captain?

    1. Cobb will be really good, but I’m more interested in Tackett Curtis and Raesjon Davis. Would love to see the young guys step up and start to show their talents. And I think Garrison Madden or something like that was a real fast guy with limited experience, is he possibly going to surprise us?

Most important is whether these guys develop and get better or not. Does Grinch know how to build a defense around the player’s talents, or does he try to force round pegs into square holes?

      1. Am I reading this correctly! Gabby is a bassoon playing female dog? I’d pay money to see that! Does Gabby know the sorcerer’s apprentice? The L.A. Phil would like to speak to that puppy.
Note to Gabby sorry, when ignorant people post I usually try ignore the source. And perhaps you should take it as a compliment that you have gotten under this prepubescent persons skin enough to make them respond with sophomoric taunts, but it was such low hanging response, I almost kicked it passing by and had to respond.

      6. Boy this fun. F*ck USC has maybe a six word vocabulary and a very Ucla grasp of etiquette. I’d love to be around when they (gender neutral pronoun) loan their mommy their phone and the predictive text kicks in. “ No mommy those are words I learned at Ucla”
Anyway faggot= bundle of sticks used to burn witches and homosexuals
Ass = wild donkey commonly found in Africa.
Punk = a stick covered in dried manure used to light fireworks.
I’m a bundle of stick on the back of a wild donkey covered in fry manure? I know I am but what are you?

    2. My great grand father immigrated to the US from Bavaria. His younger brother remained there. His brother’s son served in the Wehrmacht and became a prisoner of war when the German 6th Army surrendered to the Russians after the battle of Stalingrad. He survived the nightmare captivity and returned to Bavaria after the war where he became a priest. He never healed completely from his wartime experience. His sleep was constantly disturbed by wartime nightmares. I spent some time with him in Munchen in the 1970s. His first hand accounts of the brutal battlefield conditions, the suffering by soldiers of both armies, and the atrocities committed by desperate men in what he called “der Spielplatz des Teufels” (the devil’s playground) were chilling. He told me that while in captivity he befriended two Russian soldiers, Eastern Orthodox Christians, who patrolled the area where he was kept. He told them that he was the priest for his company, which was a lie. But it was believed and those guards occasionally slipped him a crust of bread or a rind of an orange. He credited them with keeping him alive while fellow captives starved. He told me that he prayed constantly that he would make it home and promised in his prayers that if he did, he’d become a priest to atone for his Stalingrad sins. At 76 when he passed, he was still worried whether he’d done enough in the eyes of his God to offset what he’d done at Stalingrad.

  3. We already know he isn’t fast (4.9 40). We already know he is good (leading tackler for Okie State, 16 stops versus TCU). We already know he will help.

What will help even more is getting Romello Height back. He played less than a full game last season.

    1. I really want to see Korey Foreman improving and becoming a star. Seeing guys get better from year to year would convince me that the defensive coaching is decent.

    1. I agree that Gentry would benefit from more weight. But I do not recall him getting steamrolled. He was one of USC’s best defenders in the first six games before getting hurt.

      1. He had a lot of difficulty shedding blocks. Lee sheded blocks but to was too slow getting to the point of attack which led to chasing runners from behind…… We all know Lee wasn’t running down anyone

  4. He’s productive. A lot of guys have great natural talent(a great 40 and a great vertical leap and 4 or 5 stars out of high school) but when you put him on the field, they’re not very productive. This guy fills up the stat sheets. Barring some serious injury, he will help.

  5. I suppose any transfer on defense must be able to answer one question: CAN YOU TACKLE? The one thing the defense failed the most (imho) was tackling. Two or maybe three previous coaching crews believed in the push’em outa bounds method of stopping the ball carrier. Grinch’s Achilles heel was the lack of tackling when players were in position to do so.
I still believe it goes back to the Kiffin era mistake of sanctions mentality, where players were not tackling in practice to avoid injury. The practice was continued because the coaches following Kiffin were on his staff or didn’t know better.
I could be wrong and expect someone named ” F@(& Ghost” to tell me so by calling me a sophomoric name or two.

  6. What bothers me about the defense was the level of play they reached became stagnant against some mediocre teams. It was as if they just couldn’t develop past the “try harder” stage. Now this team has more talent but are still limited in the most important part of any defense: Nose Tackle and Defensive Tackle. Asking Anthony Lucas to become a star at D-Tackle is asking a lot. Barr is average at best. Who’s controlling the line of scrimmage in the middle for SC’s defense? Will Grinch offer better counters for when his run defense falters?

I can’t speak about pass defense until I see this team step up on the run stops against the better teams on their schedule.
