USC Morning Buzz: Who Stood Out In Week 1

I asked a USC coach who stood out last week during the first three spring practices, where were closed to the media and public.

The immediate answer was wide receiver Dorian Singer, the transfer from Arizona.

“He’s got a chance to be the top receiver on the team,” the coach said. “He’s got a relentless drive and he won’t just be happy with one-or-two touchdowns a game. I think he’ll have a bigger year than (Jordan) Addison last season. People have no idea.”

The other player who flashed in Week 1 was linebacker Mason Cobb.

“He gives the defense a strong, physical linebacker, which it sort of lacked last year,” the coach said. “He can push people backward. I think he’s got a unique set of skills he can offer the defense right now.”

      1. It will truly be nice to see Shane Lee relegated to a backup role. Alabama found out he was a turtle, someone at USC misevaluated this guy. He was arguably the worst ILB in the PAC12 last season.

      3. Steve, my comment was based purely on a performance standpoint. I understand the pickings were slim. But I am just voicing my opinion on his football ability. The dude was a reliability that kept the defense on the field at times due to his total lack of speed.

He might be a leader, but you also lead by results.

He cries about all the so-called pain and suffering I have caused Americans but mocks me when I am doing something positive to address the “pain and suffering” gun violence has caused. 1. He also said that “No one who has had 220K die on his watch should be President.”

The number on his watch has surpassed 700K! You don’t hear the MSM mentioning that number.

Idiots make excuses such as the unvaccinated. Well, when you campaign almost entirely on having a plan to defeat it, convincing people to do what it takes should be part of the plan. Not to mention the fact that many on the left said throughout 2020 that they would hesitate to take a vaccine developed while Trump was in office. So now everyone should listen to them?

Bottom line is, by the standard Dementia Joe set himself, he should not be President. I wonder when he’ll be an honorable man and step down.

      2. So cal……Why would Biden be responsible for the stupidity of others that listened to all the reasons not to get vaccinated and when on their death bed expressed regret. PS….Speaking of stepping down due to covid. Under your king trump’s watch, he told Americans, 15 cases will soon be down to zero in no time, when in fact he had intel that said this was far more serious. He tried to claim victory by cutting off air travel from China yet allowed Europe to travel to the states and turn this country into a super spreader while at the same time kissing China’s ass because he needed to work out a trade deal to salvage another failed campaign pledge.

On 37 occasions he told our country China was transparent and doing a great job handling covid which turned out to be another covid related lie of his. Trump as president is responsible for the safety of this country. With that said, America represents 4% of the world’s total population, and trump had over 25% of the total worldwide deaths from covid on his watch. Given your attitude related to Biden, trump should have been indicted for negligent homicide. The guy was incompetent from day one in his handling of covid.

      1. AOC said the same thing about Texas about a year ago. It is why Dems embrace identity politics. They assume virtually all black and brown people will vote in lock step with the Dem party and if they do not they are called out as when Biden infamously said that “if you vote for Trump, you’re not really Black.” Justice Thomas pointed out in his confirmation hearing that this thinking is racist at its core because it implicitly suggests that black people are incapable of independent thought. Nobody assumes that white people will vote in lock step with the Republican party. The pursuit of the Democrat “voter replacement theory” is why Biden has opened up the southern border and allowed 4.5 million illegals to come in followed by Schumer’s request for amnesty.

The problem is that Hispanics have not necessarily embraced the dems agenda. They believe in father God, heterosexual marriage, and that children are a blessing. Dems believe in mother earth, drag queen story hour, puberty blockers without parental consent, and abortion. Hispanics believe in hard work, and serve in law enforcement and the military. Dems believe in multiple stimulus checks, extended unemployment checks, shipping manufacturing jobs to China, prohibitions on evictions, remote work, defunding the police, no bail, no prosecution of theft and other crimes, open borders, transgender surgeries in the military, and job promotions based on sex and skin color, not merit. And the list goes on and on. The differences between Hispanic values and the values of the elite whites that control the dem party may result in Texas and Florida turning from purple to bright red. Be careful what you wish for.

Abbott has done absolutely nothing to advance the causes of the Hispanic culture in Texas. Look how he handled Uvaldy, a classic example. The gerrymandering in and around Houston was done to weaken the Hispanic vote. Using your own words, California would then be a solid “red” state. The point is, you’re talking in a circle which makes little sense.

      5. White male land owner: What is the basis for AOC’s statement that an increase in the Hispanic population in Texas will result in Texas becoming a blue state? I believe it is based on historical voting patterns among Hispanics when democrats were perceived as the party of labor unions and other middle class people. That perception has changed. They have embraced a social and economic agenda that are now at odds with the majority of God fearing Americans. It follows that voting patterns will change. Generally speaking, your party will continue to have support among sexual perverts, criminals, welfare recipients, pacifists, college students, some government workers such as the teachers’ union and DEI crowd, college professors and the entertainment industry but not those who go to work Monday through Friday and church on Sunday.

He let Putin think that the West would stand on the sidelines while he invaded. And they didnt escalate support for Ukraine fast enough, when it was possible to rout the Russian army.

I have heard that some people in political circles wanted Putin to invade so he could then be weakened by an endless war. Not sure if these are the type of people who advised Biden early on, but that is just a horrible strategy.

Running against the excesses of the Democratic Party toward the center should be a cake-walk. I assume he will pivot after he wins the nomination.

We’ll just have to see how that works out. But LR is bringing in a lot of really good players(better than last year). If their defense is not good this year Grinch will be gone. There is too much talent on that defense to finish below 50 in defense nationally. I still support what LR has done so far and how he is doing it. Build a great offense first and then work on your defense. In the old days defense used to win football games. It’s still important but not as important as offense.

  10. The way LR is building this team is the right way. The rules have changed to favor the offense…..so build the offense first. We lost to Utah the first time because of 2 roughing the passer calls. None of those penalties would have been called back in the 60’s or earlier. You can’t touch the QB anymore. They might as well put a yellow jersey on him.
On one of those roughing the passer calls our D-Lineman just pushed him with one hand and then the Utah QB did an academy award worthy flop and roll over. That cost us an interception which ended up a Utah TD on the next play and we only lost by one point.
Build a great offense first then take the steps to build a great defense. One thing at a time. USC’s whole reputation as a great football school was in shambles when LR took over. You must start at ground zero and rebuild the whole culture. That’s takes time.
It took Jim Harbaugh 4 years at Stanford. In his 4th year he was 12-1 with a bowl victory and they were ready to rock and roll. If he was still at Stanford today, they would be a powerhouse.
Even after he left, that rebuilt culture lasted a number of years. Unfortunately, David Shaw was much like his friend Clay Helton…..a nice guy but not a great coach.

      1. He had a lot of talent. There were a ton of great O-Lineman who we were going after(some of them right here in our back yard) who went to Stanford(and who are now going to Oregon). Once LR rebuilds this team, they will start coming to SC.

      2. There was a run when Shaw was getting one 5* O-lineman after another. It was humiliating when Helton’s best effort was 3* guys who were really undersized for a power 5 conference. And you have Sam, a gem who fell into his lap and advanced his underachieving coaching career.

It still bugs me to think how long USC took to make coaching changes. USC should never ever have a recruiting class ranked as low as #30. That number was a direct reflection of Helton’s incompetence

      3. SC was thinking of the money they would have to pay to get rid of CH early. This is the “left coast”. A lot of the faculty at SC want to vomit when the university is willing to spend so much money on football. That doesn’t happen at Texas or most places down south or in the midwest. The people like their football. If the faculty doesn’t like it, they go along with it. It’s better to go along with it than to find yourself teaching at Po Dunk Corner U or even working as a carpenter.

      4. You are so correct about how football culture is perceived in different geographic locations across the country. It easy to judge the interest by the size of the stadium and the consecutive sellouts
