Carol Folt Made Nearly $4 Million

When USC forced Max Nikias to step down and hired a new president, there was a feeling the university (Rick Caruso) would reign in the salary of the position.

Whether USC did depends on your definition of “reign in the salary.” USA Today reports Carol Folt made $3.9 million according to Federal Tax Records for 2021.

That is less than the $5.2 million Nikias made his final year but Folt is still one of the highest-paid university presidents in the nation.

By comparison, Harvard University President Lawrence S. Bacow earned more than $1.3 million in calendar year 2021.

Andy Enfield made $3.8 million in 2021, so Folt made more than him. And USC paid Clay Helton nearly $4.7 million in 2021, including just more than $905,000 in separation payments.

Reaction: Frankly, everyone at USC listed above was overpaid. Is it really necessary to pay Folt $4 million, plus don’t forget the $8.6 million house in Santa Monica. She had resigned at North Carolina prior to USC so it wasn’t like they had to lure her to Los Angeles.

Enfield at $3.8 million? Mick Cronin made around $4 million the same year. Do you think they are doing similar jobs? Cronin has been to a Final Four and two Sweet 16’s at UCLA. Enfield went to an Elite Eight and lost in the first round twice in the same span.

Helton was grossly overpaid. A year from now, we’ll see a huge salary for Lincoln Riley, in the $9-10 millon range.

      1. What exactly has she done “well” besides pander to celebrities, extol herself, destroy a century of tradition moving USC to the Big Ten and avoid any drug or gynecologist scandals?

  1. There is nothing in Ms. Folt’s background that distinguishes her as a top university President. She utterly failed at her last job. But, she checks the DEI boxes so why not hire her and then pay her as if she is an elite hire. $60,000 a year tuition. This is nuts.

  2. The sucla basketball coach has better talent to work with as if Scott and his
Anti-Andy tirade is not aware; I thought Wiley was already making that kind of dough and he is probably one guy who has earned it with SC undoubtedly bringing in more revenue during his ‘watch,’ and now I understand why ‘Without-a-Folt’ was doing her
out-of-step little dance at the recent graduation

  3. My conclusion is Enfield needs to go and the roaming gnome Folt needs to go for being a grifter. I dont care if it’s 1.3$ million less than that other grifter kiss ass Nikias.

      1. Apparently her only accomplishment is she realized SC is all about the football team, like that took genius to figure out.

      1. One of the first things she did when she took the job was call Lynn Swann into her office and fire him. While Nakias was in there, Swann could have stayed there for decades doing nothing but playing golf. Then she hired Bohn, who hired LR. Nakais talked like he liked football. The truth is he couldn’t tell the difference between a football and a watermellon and, like the president before him, he wanted to downgrade the USC football program. He wanted to turn SC into a Princeton or Yale which once had great teams until the academic elites decided to downgrade football and emphasize academics only.
A whole lot of the professors and academic elites look at the SC program and resent the fact that they have their PhD’s and the coaches(who they see as nothing but glorified dumb jocks) make 10 times what they make. They’ve been against football program for a long time. Nakias always sided with them.
That’s why he(Nakias) loved Clay Helton so much. CH was just the guy to keep SC football mediocre (at best). Folt isn’t like that. Folt had to deal with the professors but she sided with the fans. She sees the football program as a major part of the SC culture. When people wear a USC T-shirt or a USC baseball cap, their not talking about the USC math department. She was head and shoulders(in a different universe) than Nakias. I never said she was great. I said she was good.

      2. Folt works for the university, not the student body. If she can attract students at over 60k a year and with an acceptance rate of less than 10%, she’s doing her job.

      3. I’m actually not really talking about her politics…whether she is left or right. I don’t know much about that. She may be more woke than Nakias for all I know. But she was good for the football team. As far as her wokeness…..there are very few schools nowadays that are not woke. Welcome to america in the 21st century. I doubt there are too many university president woke are not playing the woke game…..maybe Liberty university, Hillsdale college, possibly BYU. I’m just saying she is good for Football and the last 2 Presidents and the last 2 AD’s were not.

      4. Parcel: Thanks for your thoughts. I think most universities have become seminaries for leftist ideology. Folt appears to embrace that ideology. She said that USC has been guilty of systemic racism. Never identified the racist policy that was systemic at USC. Hundreds of DEI administrators at a huge cost even though the school has been incredibly diverse for over 40 years. Removal of statutes, renaming of buildings, change in admission criteria to allow admittance based on a “holistic approach” rather than grades and SAT scores. Expressed concern about the Supreme Court contemplating whether these “holistic approaches” may actually represent reverse discrimination. And the usual leftist garbage such as speech codes, trigger warnings, student disciplinary counsels without due process rights, ect. I think she wants USC to follow the ivy league and Stanford model and abandon competitive sports. But, she realized that athletic success and donations run hand in hand. So after failing to fire Helton for two agonizing years, she allowed it and we lucked out with Lincoln Reilly. She did approve his salary and I will give her credit for that but her wokeness also did not permit the hiring of Urban Meyer a few years earlier.

      5. Why in the fuck does everything that doesn’t fit correctly into your box have to become some fucking culture war with you. You sound like a fucking idiot. Tucker has you all fucked up in the head. Look in the mirror, perhaps you’re the one that is too woke. Get a new schtick. You same the same fucking shit.

I do have respect for your sports posting, but the fucking political grievance are ridiculous when the GOP has no platform t

We’re changing the subject now. I don’t know much about her politics. But I would guess that if you are the president of any major university, you probably leans to the left politically. Since I tend to lean to the right, I probably wouldn’t agree with her politically. But I do think that she has been good for the football program.
I’m convinced that the last 2 presidents wanted to de-emphasize football. Nakias was not a football fan. He wanted more money to go to womens sports. Before Nakias, you had Steven B. Sample who once said that he wanted to make SC “the Princeton of the west” academically. And as far as academics they have done a good job. SC has become a very good academic school since Sample came on the scene. Unfortunately, like Princeton, they wanted to do it at the expense of football.
Folt(whether she is woke or not), saw the importance of football to the history, heritage and culture of the school. She also saw that it made a lot of money for the school. If she is woke(and she probably is), I would disagree with her on her politics.
She didn’t fire Helton early on because of the money aspect. That was Golf-Boys fault for giving a poor HC such a big extension.
As far as Bohn getting lucky with LR, I don’t think it was luck. Haden had 2 chances to hire a really good coach. They fired Kiffin and Sark early so he had a few months to do his homework and there were many coaches out there who now knew the SC job was open.
In both cases(highly paid) Haden did no homework. He had already made up his mind who he wanted. For Kiffin, he went for a mediocre coach whom Washington could not wait to get rid of. For Sark, he went for a guy who everyone like……wouldn’t rock the boat but couldn’t coach.
He once had 2 meetings with Chris Petersen but those were show meetings. He had no intention of hiring him. After the first meeting he told the press that personally, this guy is underwhelming(a clear public put down). After the second meeting he just told the press that Petersen wouldn’t fit in to SC’s culture. After being publicly drug in the mud by Haden, Petersen just said “yeah, I guess I don’t fit in there”. Washington didn’t waste anytime. They hired him and in his 3rd year he got them to the playoffs losing to Alabama 24-7 while USC was still floundering around.
Since CH was fired early, Mike Bohn also had a few months to look for a coach. But unlike Paddy-Boy, he did do his homework and he got the right guy.
I’m not saying that I agree with her politics. I’m not saying that she is a great school president. I’m just saying that, when it comes to the football team, she’s in another universe compared with the last 2 presidents.
I must be the only person on this football forum who believes that. I’m probably the only guy who believes that Helton was a pretty good person(relatively). He just wasn’t a very good coach. But that’s OK. A lot of the things that I say nobody agrees with. I believe that Julian Asange and Edward Snowden are american heroes. Everyone I ever talked to believed they were traitors. That’s cool.
I’m not being dogmatic. You’d have to have some inside info(which I don’t have) to really know what is going on when these decisions are made. I just think that Folt and Bohn are good for USC football. But if you disagree with that…..I believe in free speech….something we have lost in this country.

      7. Gabby: My response to Parcel was based on facts. Folt’s statement about systemic racism, the “holistic” admission standards, hundreds of DEI administrators, the renaming of buildings, speech codes, lack of due process in student disciplinary proceedings, ect. If these facts are incorrect, please identify the same. Why the name calling? I did not insult Parcel or you. In fact, I agreed with Parcel that Folt should be given credit for the Reilly hire. She help with the resurgence of the football program.
I am just concerned about the “woke” path of the universities in America and I think USC is on that path. Do you honestly believe that the universities do not attempt to indoctrinate young minds with their leftist ideology? Did you see the video of what happened at Stanford law school when a federal judge appear to discuss the appellate process. About 10 years ago, I read that all 28 professors in the UCSD political science department identified as either liberal democrats, socialists, or communists. That does not surprise me. What ever happened to the university being the place where you freely debate the issues of the day and your arguments compete in the “free marketplace of ideas.”

      8. You often pass yourself off as a know-it-all, but if you knew the history of the word “woke’ it started back in the 1920’s which meant to “wake up” within the black culture. The word grew to be perceived by white people as a black cuss word. So, when you call me out for name-calling yet you use the *woke” to define cultural grievances you look like a total hypocrite.

Doubling down on your rhetoric only proves how out of touch you are with the culture, ideology and demographics of the youth of this country.
