USC Morning Buzz: The Future Became A Bit Clearer And Murkier

I keep saying I expect USC to hit the transfer portal for a QB in 2024 and that belief grew stronger after Mater Dei QB Elijah Brown said he was likely going to cancel his visit with the Trojans.

Brown is expected to choose between Stanford and UCLA with the Cardinal the favorite. I’m surprised because I think Brown is better than anyone USC will currently have on its 2024 roster.

I don’t think USC will stand pat and head into 2024 with Miller Moss and Malachi Nelson for its brutal schedule that opens with LSU and then includes Michigan, Penn State and Notre Dame.

Who could that QB be? The transfer portal is so crazy there’s no telling who will be available. Nearly anyone is a candidate. We won’t know until after the season.

  • You want to talk the big, bad Big Ten schedule travel?

How about this stretch in 1964 for USC:

Game 2 — at Oklahoma

Game 3 — at No. 2-ranked Michigan State

Game 4 — Texas A&M at Coliseum

Game 5 — at Ohio State

Brush up on your football history. In 1964 Ohio State was 7-2. Oklahoma was 6-5. Texas A&M was 1-9 and and Michigan State was 4-5. That comes out to 18-21 for those 4 teams. I would say this years USC schedule(2023) will be much tougher than that

  2. Sounds like the Mater Dei QB didn’t want to compete for the starting position. He certainly won’t have that problem at either ‘Legoland’ or bel-air tech.

    2. Personally I don’t really think that SC wanted him but I could be wrong. Now that they didn’t get Raiola, I would think that SC wants to wait until after the 2023 high school season before they feel ready to bring someone in. I’ll bet that there will be more than one QB who will rival Dillon Raiola after the upcoming H.S. season

    1. I would venture to say they do not take another Qb in 2024 class, I already advised Lincoln Riley and his staff, because I know everything. They don’t need one and why waste the scholie, which can be used on more skill position players, but definitely not big strong linemen.

  3. USC is better than last year but not yet quite at Georgia level. It’s like planning a mission to Mars to stay on top. Nelson is WAY BETTER than Elijah Brown. Brown does not have the arm strength of Nelson and Nelson was exposed in the Spring Game…give the player time to develop. Williams was an aberration and he still needed more than 18 starts to get to a dominant level.

  4. it makes more sense to take a portal QB an as insurance policy with experience than a incoming freshman unless some kid jumps off the page and looks like the next coming of Caleb

  5. Riley is going to give the backups quite a lot of playing time in the first six games of the year. Caleb will score 35 points in each first half and then turn the game over to the backups in the 3rd quarter. So Moss and Nelson will either perform, or yes, it will be transfer portal time.

    1. you’re right he needs to let Nelson get his feet wet in order to evaluate what type of talent he truly has which will dictate what direction he goes in going forward

  6. Game, Riley can’t coach for next year this season. Yes, he’ll demand more playing time for the backups but the goal is to keep the starters healthy for the end of the season so if backups (especially the second string) get seriously injured then ring the alarm. 2024 will see a real battle and Moss might beat out Nelson, who may transfer out (probably Oregon?!) or decide to stay and lookie that! No one left to challenge Nelson-until Raiola or Moore decide to come over because they want what Caleb got!

  7. Rat bastard lying Lanning is trying to push Uiagalelei into the tight end position when he recruited him to play defense. That guy won’t stay at Oregon after the meltdown. Stanford and Cal-Berkeley will probably go down to FCS level with the way those schools are run.

  8. Has tailback U become quarterback U? Maybe, but I still hope that down the road we will have a more balanced attack. USC has had some great quarterbacks and great running backs, but my opinion of the best USC teams had either a combined attack of good backs on a great team or smart use of the talent available.
An example, I think Marcus Allen was a better tailback than Charles White, but together in the backfield Allen was often just a blocker. The combination was was like a slow poison, let Allen go by to stop White, until the coach sprang the trap and handed Allen the ball.
    Feel free to disagree

We had 483 runs play and 515 pass play that’s about as balanced as you can get so I do disagree with you

I don’t mind political talk (topical, etc) but going to the same sorry trope of Biden & Dementia reeks of desperation for acceptance, and I am NOT a fan of Biden. It’s low hanging fruit and it’s lazy. Take it to Facebook

        So Cal,
Say what you want about Biden, you’re entitled to your opinion. Please find another forum to vent your grievances other than “InsideUSC”. You said the blog was a place to root for USC athletic programs. Instead of looking like a major hypocrite post content related to its intended purpose.

SoCal, I really can’t believe you attended USC? YOU must admit you have turned this blog into hating Biden for a long time since Wolf change server. Talk Trojan football or any of their 19/20 teams competing in
        the NCAA

  9. Malachi Nelson was the top ranked quarterback in 2023. This included Sire of Manning, who was obviously underwhelming. Still, this kid was ranked near the top of his class. What gives? Are you saying this kid doesn’t have what it takes? Can we know that already? Is it possible that we need to find the next Caleb Williams or would Miller Moss be the perfect candidate to take his place. Guy is a talented player, the likes of which should be able to find success in a well run offense. Does LR need a guy that is going to run like Caleb or can he do it with conventional weapons? Maybe have a defense that can do more than get turnovers would be a good start. Have a team that is both dominant at running and stopping the run. These have always been a great path to the promised land.
