It seems like more football recruits are committing this summer than normal.
And in a way, it makes sense. The culprit is the transfer portal.
High school players are worried these days about getting a scholarship because colleges are using the transfer portal so much to build their rosters. So if you want to play it safe, it’s better to commit to a school in June or July, even if you are in love with that school.
If a better school comes along in the fall with an offer, you can simply decommit. There’s always a chance you could get dropped by the college you chose before Signing Day, but that happens less frequently than recruits changing their mind.
There was a time at USC when Pete Carroll decided to wait until the fall to take most commitments because he believed it was important to watch a player in their senior year and he thought a lot of players developed as seniors.
With two Signing Days and the transfer portal today, I’m sure Carroll would adjust his thinking. It’s part of the culture now, for better or worse.

I like the way LR is approaching recruiting. He’s building this team slowly. Dillon Riaola is the top QB now but will he still be after the 2023 High School season? Don’t be surprised if a bunch of QB’s (who nobody is talking about now) hit their stride during the 2023 season. Like I said, At the end of the 2023 season, they’ll be a whole bunch of new high school stars out there.
And if SC has a great season in 2023, a lot of those 5 stars who have already committed will be open to de-committing and coming to SC. It ain’t over till the fat lady sings(AKA….they sign the LOI).

Parcelman LR is building a.championship team, look at where these players are coming from Texas, Georgia, Florida,MD, now we just need Alabama N Louisiana. What I see on defense is making sure he stacks the depth chart with elite backups who are pushing starters like PC, which is good for the betterment of the team. I’m hearing Brown from Mater Dei is the next to commit hopefully. Next year the secondary will be the strongest similiar to Lott, Smith, Browner, Thurman days. Length Speed Ballhawking Athletic Safety. Next transfers Beavers, Gordon? Not getting better crucial fall camp for both players That’s why they are recruiting so many safeties. Fight On

Just owns just look at the size of the elite DBs Piece 6-3, Crawford 6-4, when he recovers Jackson 6-2, and the have the 1 safety committed Fegans. These players want to be great so I believe if they work hard to put us over the top. Just let the season play out buddy. It will be something special.

It’s the competition that will make these players better. I’m sure that these SC players are hitting it big in the weight room. They see 5-10 (4 or 5 star) really good players competing for 1 or 2 starting jobs. Some of those 3 stars have a high ceiling which they haven’t even come close to reaching. And some of those 3 stars that came in as projects a coupe of years ago are really maturing.

Overall the recruiting is very good. They still have work to do on both the offensive and defensive lines and linebackers. Missing out on the local line players and linebacker that are in the top 100 is a big problem.
Donte Williams is recruiting at a high level. I guess the players dont read Wolf on how bad a coach he is.
USC just needs to reach the CFP this year to close out the recruiting season with a top class. We have the potential to be in the top 5 in 2024, but so do a handful of other programs on the cusp.
With a CFP presence this year, 2025 will be the year USC can compete for any athlete and aim for a #1 class.

SC didn’t do bad last year. They were 11-3 and just 2 points from going 13-1. Not bad for the first year. With much better players this year, you’d have to bet that they will have a much better record.

I’m sure he gave it his best. He just wasn’t a very good head coach. Actually, I see nothing to make me believe that he was even a good assistant coach. He didn’t excel anywhere.
I don’t believe Sark was a good head coach but at least he was a good OC. Kiffin was a good HC but he came on the scene right at the height of all the NCAA penalties.
Under Helton we probably were Dumpster U but you are living in the past. We don’t have a dumpster U coach anymore. We have a great coach. And we don’t have a couple of dumpster AD’s and a Dumpster president(Zakias) who wanted to keep hiring dumpster coaches.
Get into the real world. The fundamentals have changed in a big way. The pieces are there for success. It’s not unrealistic to believe that success is coming.
Saudi Arabia was a desert wasteland for millenia until the industrial revolution and they discovered oil. At that point it really was realistic to believe that things were about to change. I think that the same thing is true at SC.

I totally agree with you. I think the firing at USC changed him for the better. He got humbled and it made him a person. From that point forward his career as an HC has been solid. I would consider him to have one of the top offensive minds in college football. I don’t know if he has the thirst to get back in the NFL.

Alabama just got a LB from Europe. His name is Justin Okoronkwo. He’s 6’3″ 225. He runs the 40 in 4.49. He has a 38 inch vertical leap. He has all the intangibles.
SC was going after a guy like that from London just last month. He had it down to 3 schools: SC, Tennessee and, I think, Texas Tech. He chose Tennessee. But I heard that the school that he really wanted to go to was SC. But there was a problem. He didn’t have the academic credentials to get into SC.
Alabama(or any of those schools down south with the exception of maybe Vanderbilt) never has that problem. If you’re a football player at Bama, there is one evaluation. Can you play at Alabama’s level. If the answer is yes….you’re in. As far as academics…..the only test is……they ask you “what is 2+2?” If you say 4….you’re academically eligible. If you say 5 or 6, they say “no problema….we’ll work with you”.
I had a close friend(although I haven’t seen him in a while) who worked at UCLA but also worked at SC. He graduated from U of Georgia. He used to tell me that academically, Georgia is just a glorified high school. If you could play football, you could go through 4 years at any of those SEC schools(except Vanderbilt) and come out not being able to read.

That’s some crazy measurables. My concern be be the quality of the players he’s played against. Nick probably told him foreign students are ineligible for NIL benefits. There are a ton of foreign students playing collegiate men’s and women’s soccer in the States.

I was born and raised in Santa Barbara County, left for Las Vegas in 2002, and never looked back. Between my wife and me, there is only an Aunt and Uncle still in California. I now have family in Nevada, Idaho, Oregon, Texas, and Michigan.
My in-laws recently purchased a nice house on an acre in Michigan for under 300k
They will soon find out what it’s like to live through four seasons of weather..

As far as I know, Santa Barbara is still a nice town. Santa Monica, which used to be a really nice beach town(I used to go down there often) is now a garbage dump. In certain parts of Santa Monica(not all parts), the people must go to the postal office to get their mail. The Post Office will not send postal workers into those areas. It’s too dangerous. Venice has gone downhill too.

It is great to see the early commits. It gives a view of who can stick with a commitment and who flakes out. It also helps in recruiting others who have not yet made a commitment. Will we lose somebody? Chances are good that will happen, but better now than later.
