The USC Friday Notes Column Supplement

If USC does not play Michigan in 2024 and Ohio State in 2025 when the Big Ten schedules get revamped, I’m going to be pretty frustrated.

The addition of Washington and Oregon should mean USC doesn’t have to play Rutgers or Maryland. But Michigan and Ohio State need to remain on the schedule. The Big Ten can’t be that dumb. The Pac-12 would be.

  • One reason I love writing about USC history is to appreciate people that are easily forgotten. I wrote about Don Doll before but this morning it felt like the first time again as I went over his accomplishments.

Doll led USC in rushing, receiving and scoring in 1948. He led USC in rushing in 1944, 1947 and 1948. Doll played 43 minutes in the 1945 Rose Bowl and was the game’s leading rusher as USC defeated unbeaten Tennessee, 25-0.

He was a USC assistant coach from 1957-58 and a long-time NFL assistant.

Is he in the USC Hall of Fame? Of course not.

  • This photo is really the Holy Grail from a Monroe-USC perspective. USC halfback Al Carmichael gets a rose from Marilyn Monroe before the Trojans played in the 1953 Rose Bowl. Carmichael visited the set of “Gentlemen Prefer Blondes” and Monroe gave him roses for himself and his teammates.

    The Trojan quarterback threw 100 passes for 500 total yards.

    and Troy’s halfback gained less than 400 yds

    It was a different ‘Football-Age’ back then and the game has been refined (or created differently) ever since

    1. Those games will be on TV Sparrow, not taking off schedule. Any soft cream teams that don’t draw over 6 million viewers won’t be shown on prime time like North Western v Succla 9am. I really can’t see them taking both off the schedule. Not smart SC will eventually be the driving force of the Big in TV ratings ITS THE BRAND MAN!!!!¡!!!

  12. While we all are flummoxed and excited by these fast-moving
    Conference-changing moves, it is sad that the Pac-12 leftover
    colleges Cal, Stanford, Wash St and Oregon St have been abandoned as if they were unwanted step-children.
    They don’t have the same football muscle as the other Pac-12 teams and so are left behind

      1. FYI…..Cal was one of the original four teams that form the Pacific Coast Conference(PCC), back in 1915. Which has evolved into the current Pac-12. A lot of football history behind that program. Just not a lot of winning.

        USC didn’t join until 1922

  13. I don’t think the B16 weather is that big of an issue except for potentially 2 or 3 mid to late November games. Presumably, the BIG will allow the SC vs. UCLA game to be the last game in November, the same week that Ohio St. plays Michigan. So we are down to 1 or 2 potential cold weather games. I wonder if the BIG will allow the Washington or Oregon game in November. If so, we have virtually eliminated the bad weather games but my guess is that the BIG schedulers will not allow this to happen. Too much west coast advantage. Expect a USC vs. Penn State match-up the week before the UCLA game and a USC vs. Michigan match-up the week before that.

    2. The teams have heaters and parkas, even warming shelters on the sidelines. Not so sure the cold is as big of deal as it used to be. All this complaining about cold, travel, and big bodies is BS. USC will come in prepared to play anyone, anywhere and any time. This isn’t the Helton era any more.

  15. I did a trade show in twin cities about 30 yrs ago. October 1st, woke up and 6 inches of snow on my car.

    Oct can be brutal. 45°, horz rain, wind. Not a good day for passing a FB.

    That does not show up in the averages. In the upper Midwest, there are very few outdoor events scheduled after the first week of October. Bin dare, dun dat.
