USC Notes: Another Larry Scott Blunder

Larry Scott’s buffoonery is legendary. But it’s even worse than imagined.

Scott had a handshake agreement with NBC Sports back in 2011, but then reneged on it, according to John Ourand of Sports Business Journal.

“It was going to be a big part of NBC’s schedule,” Ourand said. “Fox and ESPN did not want to give NBC any kind of foothold. (So) Larry Scott reneged on the deal with NBC. He ended doing the deal with Fox and ESPN.

“Where do think they would be right now if they had a nice prime-time slot on NBC and NBC invested in it and marketed it? I think that was a colossal misstep by Larry Scott.”

    What’s really important is that FOX paid for Oregon and Washington to be in the B1G for $30 million each. Really, FOX? Or did that money come from Nike? And increased Ad buys? And that boys and girls, is why Oregon will always be forced down our throats. I don’t see anybody on USC’s side who is willing to fight for the school and help football reclaim the top spot. Wayne Hughes was carrying a heavier load that I could ever imagine.

    1. Wayne Hughes died recently. Phil Knight is 85 and will die soon as well. After that, recruits will star looking at a map again before they commit and realize what the hell they are about to do. The nice facilities and the pretty little uniforms will become a fad and the world will normalize again. All it will take to make that happen sooner is a USC Playoff appearance and obviously a Title.

So God was just kidding when he took us from an immortal state to a mortal one and instituted hard labor for food and painful child birth based on the original sin in the garden. Who banished Cain. Was the God doesn’t interfere dictum before or after the great flood. I thought Ham was punished by God. God didn’t seem to like that his children build a tower to mankind, confused our languages as I recall. Wasn’t God behind the execution of Sodom, real fire and brimstone stuff. How about the plagues on Egypt, the angel of death and slaughter of the first born or the parting of the Red Sea. Seems like he interfere on that one. God gave us his commandments, that doesn’t seem consistent with do whatever you like and I remember something about God forcing the Israelites to swallow the gold remnants of the calf when they built the golden calf in defiance of his laws and then punishing them with 40 years of wandering in the desert until every one who disobeyed him had died. What about the numerous times God fought on the side of Israel and even gave his battle plans to Gideon, Jacob, and David. Lots of interference there. And of course God gave us his beloved son, Jesus, to reconcile himself to his creation. Thanks for interfering God.

  6. Larry Scott was probably most responsible for this catastrophy. But you also have all these liberal school presidents and Board of Trustees and AD’s at these liberal west coast schools(and Colorado) who would love to see football downgraded like they once did in the Ivy league. They have their share of blame. The Pac-12 didn’t need to disintegrate just because SC and UCLA left. Texas and Oklahoma left the Big-12 and it didn’t disintegrate.

    1. Very good points Parcel. I think the majority of the blame falls on the university Presidents including Carol Folt. These Presidents really don’t appreciate what college football brings to the university experience. It means nothing to them. They were in their dorm reading Marxist ideology when the games were being played. But what Folt and perhaps some others began to realized, it means a great deal to some very wealthy alumni who donate millions of dollars to the school and want to continue the unique experience of college football. After the donations to USC fell, and revenues from football tanked, Ms. Folt miraculously became a fan of USC football and was willing to pay Lincoln Reilly in excess of 10 million per year to turn things around. I don’t know if the same epiphany will occur with Stanford and Cal. It may be that most of their big donors simply don’t care much for football or whether it survives.

      1. Folt and Bohn were good for SC football in my humble opinion. Had they not come here, we would still be in the Pac-12 making much less money and CH might still be here. Of all the teams in the former Pac-12, Cal cares the least about football. If I was a HC, I would never go there. You can’t win there.

    P.S. last time I stayed at the late great Pioneer Inn in Lahaina was 1973. $8/night. And your choice of bikinis at the nightly luau in the courtyard. As of last week it was $373/night and courtyard breakfast for two was $100. Now in ashes.

    2. Hurricane winds and fire are a terrible combination. But MG is a fighter, and will land on his feet. I am confident that Maui will rebuild and be as beautiful as ever in a few years but perhaps without the historic charm of Lahaina.

      1. Lot of $$$$$$ come in handy when a destroyed small town needs a total rebuild. A lot Lahaina’s homes and business structures were built in the late 19th century and early to mid 20th century for high hundreds of $ and low thousands of $.

        Now in the early 21st Century, land, city codes and fees building materials have driven construction costs so high that only RE Corporations and billionaires can afford the cost of 21st century reconstruction.

        Long time happy low income and middle class Lahaina residents are done for in Maui.

        No doubt Lahaina will be renamed for the Lead Construction loan Bank; Something like “The New, improved Lahaina, brought to you by (the) X-named Robber Baron Bank.

        Wouldn’t be surprised to see “the Donald” and his crew of AH’s offering penny’s on $ for residential lots.

    1. Trojanboogs: I had a friend who went to the 2002/2003 Orange bowl game against Iowa. He was floored by the amount of drinking/intoxication of our Iowan brothers. There may be a reason Iowa rejected beer in favor of the more powerful spirits. It’s what they do.

      Yeah –it’s a real serious bummer to realize there are so many newly homeless families…and so many with homes who can’t return to them because all access roads are blocked. Lots of businesses will never come back. [My wife forced me to help her bring food and clothing to one of the drop off centers for the evacuation shelters. I’m glad she did. Helping strangers isn’t as difficult or awkward as I thought it would be]…
