That USC-Mater Dei Pipeline Still Needs Fixing

  • Four-star offensive tackle DeAndre Carter of Mater Dei committed to Auburn. At one time, USC was a favorite but Carter didn’t have the Trojans in his final three.

He is considered by some to be the nation’s No. 1-rated interior lineman. Mater Dei offensive tackle Brandon Baker, also a four-star prospect, is not considering USC. This would have been unimaginable under John McKay or John Robinson.

I’d be more forgiving if the USC offensive line looked great the first two games with its transfers. It still needs to get some guys like Carter and Baker.

I’m starting to wonder if recruits relate to offensive line coach Josh Henson.

  • A friend texted to say the USC radio announcer referred to Colorado QB Shedeur Sanders as “Jackson” on Saturday.

Sanders was off the board when Heisman odds opened up by BetOnline. He opened at 100/1 and was 66/1 on Thursday. He is currently 20/1. His teammate, Travis Hunter, is also 20/1.

  1. I don’t understand why we can’t keep our home grown big uglies at home? We need a NIL just for offensive lineman? We seem to always be in the intial top 10 or top 3, only to fall short once the recruit hears they cannot offer a minuscule NIL deal.

    1. It sure seems these prima donnas from MD are all looking for the immediate payday. If they cannot handle the way USC does NIL screw them. I don’t see Riley buying anyones loyalty. If they want to come to USC they can come, but if they are looking for the biggest bag of cash, it isn’t at USC. Local recruiting is not what it was just a couple of years ago. USC does not need MD or Bosco.

      1. With the Branch brothers on the team, perhaps Bishop Gorman becomes the new feeder school….They have as much D1 talent on that team as any high school in the country

  2. Auburn must have written him a big check. Their program is going backwards, they are below .500 the last three years, they have had maybe 2 good seasons in the last 10.

      1. What would any top lineman see in USC? Well, they’ve been soft on the line of scrimmage for over a decade, never seem to make the playoffs, and they loose to big strong physical teams 😂😂😂

  3. I am sure Riley is already drooling at the offensive line talent at Bishop Gorman. They have two 5* and one 4* that are class of 2025 recruits starting on the line.

    1. Fingers crossed. Many of us crap on the USC O-line, but on the other hand, Caleb does hold the ball a very long time. Run blocking is much better, USC running game is averaging close to 1.7 yards more per rush since Riley came compared to the two years before him. That is a huge improvement.

The play he made early in the game when it looked like he was being chased out of bounds then somehow got the pass off to a one-handed catch by Singer….Major highlight material!

      2. Yes, that play was insane. Riley was quoted as saying something like “I yell at him to throw it away, but I am glad he didn’t listen to me.” There was also the play when Caleb found Rice for a TD. Mahomes maybe was the last college QB who could pull off the Houdini act.

    2. You mean other high schools have elite talent besides Mater Dei? To listen to Scott that would be incomprehensible. The HC there is no longer a Trojan, he’s a National University something or other. The pipeline is clogged until further notice.

    3. I don’t need talented offensive linemen, they get in my way, Stupid, I need more receivers, running backs, and quarterbacks. And btw, I don’t really need a good defense either, because we’ll just score 60 points a game

    1. Yes, the young man is not playing the long game. A USC degree will open many doors. Auburn? Not so much, unless you really want to live the rest of your life in Alabama.

    1. The Travis Hunter story (Colorado 2-way player, he played in something like 100 snaps yesterday) is inspiring, but playing him both ways obviously increases his injury likelihood, including the contribution of fatigue to injuries.

      1. Very impressed by his enough. Off the top of my head, I think he had an INT, and over 120 receiving yards, and a TD. I wonder when the last time someone played over 100 snaps was. It just never happens

    2. It’s early — guys can and will throw for 400 yards and get noticed each Saturday —but—-if Caleb visits South Bend and delivers on October 14th …and … comes back to town and beats Utah….he’s gonna be so firmly planted in the driver’s seat it’ll be hard to dislodge him …even if we lose one game in that Washington, Oregon, UCLA stretch…..[especially if it’s Oregon at Oregon]….

    1. I think it’s been over 20 years(@ USC 2002) since Auburn traveled past the Mississippi for an OOC game. Any time the PAC12 beats an SEC team it’s a good day. Good luck, and hope the outcome is favorable.

  4. Cal, you fellas looked good, particularly the super quick RB Ott.

Ironic that this could be Pac 12’s best year in a long time, with incompetence (league leadership) and ineptitude (Pac 12 university presidents who picked 2 loser leaders) destroying it.

Sad the way she tries to claim she is mocking me with it. Such a child.

No one else sees it that way. But a mentally deranged individual? Yeah.

  5. In terms of mater dei, it’s not just USC, it’s just everybody in the pac 12. They’re not even thinking about UCLA, Oregon, Washington. If USC didn’t get those players, somebody else within the conference did so I wouldn’t put this just on SC.

    1. Point is Wolf thinks it is still important to have a MD pipeline when in fact those days are gone. MD prima donnas don’t want USC and USC doesn’t need MD. Let them go all over the country like dummies instead of staying home.

Either way just keep watching us with your anger as we win weekly because that’s all any dominant program/franchise requires – eyes on the game.

  6. I can honestly say that the Oregon St win at San Jose St is very impressive. Coaching is everything. However, it ain’t the X’s and O’s but the Jimmy’s and Joes. As Florida St showed, you have to put your players in a position to succeed. Riley is doing a better job of that for the entire team and so USC has a chance. Small, but still a chance.
